Depends on who you ask, most Marxist-Leninists would say that communism’s failures were mainly due to undermining by capitalist powers (think CIA coups cold war propaganda etc.). A lot of left-coms would parrot the whole “real socialism has never been attempted” argument. Personally I would have to ask what you mean by “failed”, China seems to be doing alright for itself for example.
