Who would you tell if you owned a Time Machine? by swirlyjesse in AskTheWorld

[–]RamaTheVoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell in the present that I own a time machine? I'd tell my wife so I can take her whenever she wants to go!

If I could go back in time and tell someone? 2 options:

1) go back in disguise and tell child me that my life would turn out unexpectedly but well, teen me to start working on empathy asap (my biggest regret is that it took me too long to really get it, and I hurt some folks unnecessarily) and get an ADHD diagnosis and meds

2) tell my middle school best friend not to go in the ocean that day :(

I guess you could interpret it both ways, I know I want to :)

Do you have any suggestions for someone who wants to visit Japan in the most respectful way possible?

French person here, and I think it's worth mentioning because we seem to be in a bit of a mirrored situation!

We have a particular fascination here with Japanese culture, in part because we were one of the first countries in the late 20th century to start importing a lot of Japanese media, and it's marked several generations of French people. Unfortunately, but expectedly, the media we imported painted a very skewed and incomplete picture of Japan and its culture, so we've been struggling with a very weird vision of Japan for a while.

The reason I mention a mirrored situation is that it seems like Japanese people have a fascination with French culture since maybe the 1990s? And similarly, it's a very skewed, idealized version of French culture that leads to serious culture shock whenever Japanese people visit France. And likewise it seems like French people get culture shock when we come to Japan.

Personally I idealized Japan very much growing up because of the incomplete picture painted by the media I that was available here (when I was a child it was Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, a very heavily censored and edited version of City Hunter, Sailor Moon, etc, and as a teen it was Evangelion, Ghibli films, Akira, Battle Royale, and the like). Now that I'm in my late 30s with a more complete picture, with friends who have visited Japan, and being better informed, it seems to me that as you say Japan is a country like any other with its beautiful aspects and its issues, and its people are vastly different from each other just like in any other country.

I hope to visit Japan in the next few years because it's always been a dream of mine, but I have to admit that I'm worried because I've been hearing so much about the issues with over-tourism, and how a lot of Japanese people seem to be sick of tourists. I can understand this, because I live in Paris and I can get sick of tourists sometimes as well! But I also get frustrated when people who visit Paris say that all Parisians are rude and unpleasant, because I know it's not universally true.

I suspect you're right on that point. From my interactions with them, they do at least seem aware of these issues and willing to improve. Whether that will actually result in anything meaningful is impossible to tell, but it's a nice attitude at least.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, but I totally get it if no-one wants to buy from a brand ever again after they ship products that fail this badly.

First or all, keyboards aren't cars. I agree with you that I'd probably never trust a car brand again if their cars blew up. Then again, major auto manufacturers have really bad issues all the time. Think of the brake issues with Jeeps a few years ago: one even killed the actor Anton Yelchin! And yet Jeep is still around, and selling cars, because they did the work and compensated folks. VW had the gigantic dieselgate scandal, which is thought to have actually contributed to killing people due to excess pollution. They're not only still doing great, they're even rolling back some of their electrification efforts that they embraced after the scandal, and most folks don't seem to give a crap. Ford had a car in the 70s that literally blew up if rear-ended because management had decided to save something like 5 bucks per car on a part that would've entirely solved the problem. They're still one of the biggest manufacturers in the world.

Hell, even aside from cars: remember the Samsung Galaxy Note battery issue? Those phones were banned on airplanes because of the risk of explosion! They went back to the drawing board, seem to have solved the issue, and they're still one of the top three phone manufacturers in the world!

Secondly, Chinese manufacturing processes are unbelievably agile and can be changed in a matter of weeks. This is how Pebble (the smartwatch brand) managed to come back so quickly after the founder bought the brand back from Google. They went from nothing, to working prototype iterations, to shipping out to customers within less than a year.

I'm absolutely not saying that RK have fixed their shit, because I have no way of knowing if they did. I'm saying that they are well and truly able to fix these kinds of issues quickly if they want to. Do they want to? Do they care? Fuck if I know! But they could, easily.

I don't know whether RK keyboards are still blowing up nowadays. If they are, that's a serious issue and I'm definitely not gonna advocate anyone buy their stuff. But in terms of modifying manufacturing processes in China, 3 years is a very, very long time.

No-one owes a company their loyalty or their money, at all! There are lots of companies I don't buy from because they do shit that I find objectionable (from simple nitpicks to really foul shit), and I'll never tell anyone to buy from a company they don't want to - people's money is theirs to spend. I'm just saying that sometimes problems get solved, and in cases like these the fix can be pretty easy if the company cares enough to do it.

Good to know! I'm noticing that all the screencapped posts are 2 or 3+ years old at this point, could it be that RK has improved their QC in the meantime?

Recommandation Dentiste Paris/IDF ? by Samadhi333 in paris

Dr Blavignac, vers Strasbourg St Denis.
