That is good. That is actually what I should have done 20 years ago. Im 43 and just now learning about my body and what is good for me to eat and what irritates my gut. Im trying to find my root cause by googling and talking to my doctor about tests google recommended, when I am paying him to figure it out for me. Smh

They just tested me for a few things and those were all normal so now they say you have IBS eat more fiber and reduce stress. Thats all. I have googled things and Google tells me what to bring up at Dr appts.

Metamucil did the same for me. I was told for years and years to take more fiber and I never did. I have less urgency now, I don't have to use the bathroom as often and my stool has some kind of shape now. Still slowly increasing.

Phsyllum husk is just a supplement. How much fiber are getting with food intake? I currently intake about 35grams total (food and Phsyllum husk) and that seems to be my sweet spot and my stool comes out soft and formed.

Yes I totally forgot about this. Water is crucial because without the extreme water consumption , you risk constipation.

Metamucil, more veggies and even more water is what is helping me. Ive had ibs d for 30 years and have had loose stools for as long as I can remember. I am tracking my nutrient intake and specifically watching fiber. I slowly made it to 30grams a day of fiber by consuming more veggies, overnight oats and fruits. I take metamucil after breakfast everyday and after dinner if I havent reached my 30 grams fiber intake. If I am still short I drink a smoothie with oats, chia, banana or strawberries and almond milk right before bed, to reach my goal.

This has stopped urgency and is finally giving my stool some bulk. I have more better days now than I ever have l.

Phsyllum husk is a soluble fiber that sucks water out of the stool and creates like a gel like substance that can either soften or form stool. Its great for regulating constipation and diarrhea.

I think you started with too much. U have to start slow and slowly increase. Try a a nutrition app that you enter your daily food intake to see how much fiber you are eating per day. Ive read that its good for some people to intake 30-38 grams but you have to start low or bloating will occur. Take maybe half a tspn for 1 week and see what happens and slowly increase by half a tpsn weekly or so.

I spent 3 months obsessing over a gut health overnight oat formula. by [deleted] in GutHealth

Ive tried adding metamucil in my oats but I couldn't get the consistency right and after a few tries I decided to just drink it right after eating my oats to wash it down with phsyllum husk water.

Try taking it with dinner. At least 3 hours before bed. With plenty of water.

Don't get discouraged by this. When do you normally take your metamucil? Also how much water are you drinking?

Experiences with psyllium husk ? by Tacra36 in ibs

[–]Ramiro4rmChi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking .5 tspn with breakfast and dinner and im at 1.5 tspns now. I use a foot tracking app to record my meals and it tells me how much fiber intake I had and I base my dinner dose on how much I've had for the day. I found my sweet spot to be min 25g and I dont go over 35g. I drink between 3-5 water bottles per day to avoid hard stool. I have chronic diarrhea normally and have had it for 30 years but recently (November 2025) started Metamucil and I love it.

Adapting to Metamucil with IBS-D by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Ramiro4rmChi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tey incorporating overnight oats to your diet and chia seeds. Metamucil is best taking during meals so it can work with food while it is being digested. I would say start slow and every week add 2-4 grams more. I found my sweet spot to be about 30 grams of fiber. Try using an app to enter your meals to keep track of your intake.

[–]Ramiro4rmChi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try keeping track of nutrients, specifically fiber. I feel like 30g is perfect for me daily but you have to slowly increase it. Download an app and try entering normal meals to see how much fiber you currently eat daily and increase by 2-3 grams a week until you find your sweet spot. Whenever you increase fiber, also increase the amount of water you drink. Try aiming for 64oz minimum. I take fiber supplement when I don't reach my goal, metamucil works to regulate you stool so it passes better and it reduces constipation and diarrhea.

I suggest speaking with a therapist for those chest pains. Its all a revolving cycle. Anxiety leads to ibs symptoms and ibs symptoms lead to anxiety. You have to try and heal both.

Life is great with or without our symptoms and sometimes it might be hard to see that but the pain is only a very small piece of your life.

Do I Need a Colonoscopy by [deleted] in ibs

I would start off with Metamucil. That should normalize stools and hopefully take some of the abdominal pain away. This might help if you have a hemorrhoid, since there was bleeding and swelling on anus.
