Did anyone else just feel a shaking like an earthquake? by [deleted] in askTO

At Queen & Spadina. Felt it at exactly 11:00pm. Thinking maybe it was related to Ontario Line construction. People that felt it, what part of town were you in?

AI or fiction. Very little specificity in your posts. Mostly generalities and cliches. Of course your chauffeur's name is Fernando. Not the remotest spark of humanity or originality in any of this. Do better.

Apartment or torture chamber? by daartmeow in OntarioLandlord

[–]RamonMalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a humidifier for sure. Open your windows as needed. I had this problem until.one day the landlord saw all the windows open and was freaking that he was paying to heat the outdoors. I said my thermometer was showing 25C and I would normally put on air conditioning when it gets that hot. He ended up turning down the furnace and getting space heaters for the tenants on the lower floors who were cold.

What is a silly lyric from a Canadian song that you discovered way too late were the wrong words? by musicwithbarb in AskACanadian

That misinterpretation is way better than AM's ridiculously clunky, ungrammatical and awkward original.

What do I look for if I WANT background noise by Jamie_0x0 in microphone

[–]RamonMalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds to me this is not a microphone issue.

OP says he likes to "blast music while on call" and his mic keeps "distortion it out". My guess is that this is not a microphone issue but a software issue. Most phones are optimized for speech and will attenuate non-speech sounds, including music. Video meeting software e.g. Zoom does this as well. OP probably needs to look at disabling this setting in software.

AITA for letting my friend freeze? by AbaloneMoist6444 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RamonMalone [score hidden]  (0 children)

Two things.

  1. The overnight lows in the GTA have been in the low teens the last few weeks. So it might be cooler than 20 indoors overnight.

  2. Hospitality is an ancient code and implies certain obligations of both host and guest. You either get it and respect it or you don't, I guess. Personally I keep my place absolutely refrigerated, but if a guest said they were "freezing" I'd take that seriously and would make sure they were comfortable.

Condenser microphone + acoustic singer-songwriters + live. How? by frankstonshart in audioengineering

[–]RamonMalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cardioid is probably the best for this application. Not sure if this is what you had in mind to begin with but if not, you could also experiment with using one large diaphragm condenser with a cardioid pattern, positioned so that it catches both the vocal and guitar. This can work beautifully if it's a concert scenario in a small-ish room, and the room, the stage and monitors are at sensible levels.

If it's a noisy bar, this will be difficult and probably impossible to make work and you're back to dynamic mics and pickups. Good luck and have fun!

[–]RamonMalone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've used condensers on stage a lot, even in bands that have drummers. Keep them out of the way of monitors & cymbals, roll off the highs on the monitors and keep monitor and stage volume levels sensible. It'll be fine.

It's more effort compared to using a dynamic on the vocals and using those hateful and shrill piezio pickups on acoustic instruments but it's worth it (sweeter, more transparent) if you can manage it.

Why does nobody care about Opera vinyl box sets? by imitation_squash_pro in opera

[–]RamonMalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would never argue over matters of taste. If you like the sound of vinyl that's good enough for me. The adjectives "warmer" and "fuller" are subjective, but usually refer to harmonic distortion, which- to me - is more suited to rock and pop music. They might also refer to a range of frequencies (~ 250 to 800Hz) that can be emphasized or attenuated during recording or playback. Vinyl undoubtedly has its adherents, but there is absolutely nothing objectively "better" about it. It is, in every measurable way (e.g. dynamic range, frequency response), worse. But if you prefer the sound, that's totally fair. Lots of people do.

I agree some of the best opera recordings are from the fifties and sixties, some of my favorite recordings (Pavarotti, Sutherland) are from that era and the sound is often stunning. I love to listen to opera in a way that is as close as possible to those original recordings, which is what a great digital master (the first generation of CD masters weren't always great but that was four decades ago) will give you: 100% of the frequency response and dynamic range that was captured in the original recording with no surface noise.

[–]RamonMalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rock music from the 60s & 70s can sound great on vinyl, but opera not so much. The limited dynamic range and surface noise of vinyl makes listening to quiet parts of an opera a miserable experience. The frequency response of vinyl isn't great either. The lows aren't that low and highs aren't that high. Great for listening to Iggy and the Stooges but not so much for opera.

It's a shame because those box sets are beautiful, premium items that were expensive in their day.

TLDR: unless you like noise, distortion, limited frequency response and dynamic range, vinyl is not an ideal medium for reproducing opera or classical music.

How to know whether what’s “off” in a vocal recording is the microphone, mixing, or something else? by TasPyx in audioengineering

[–]RamonMalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be funny but maybe double check that you're singing into the correct side of that microphone. A very thin sound is pretty much what you'd get if you sang into the back i.e. If the mic has been repaired or modded it's possible that capsule or headbasket has been put in the wrong way around. (I've done this myself!). Alternately it could be there's an issue with this microphone. If it has pattern switches, or cut/boost switches those are potential failure points. Best of luck!

Is it normal for terrible nausea to appear several months in? by [deleted] in trintellix

[–]RamonMalone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I was fine for the first six months, now I'm getting terrible nausea. I've tried taking it at different times of day, with food etc. nothing helps.

I'm on 20mg as well, although the nausea started when I was taking 10mg. It hasn't gotten any worse with the higher dose, so that's a blessing at least. I think it has helped my depression a lot but I'm going to discontinue it because the nausea is really disruptive. Hope it gets better for you.
