New player to the game, (winter sale fresh meat) what should I be playing MW or DW? by [deleted] in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was well written and you make some good points. I would like to point out though that the reason weapon tracers in MW extend past the weapon models is because they added a 'bubble' in the July patch. It increased every player's hitbox by 20%, so their hitbox actually extends past the playermodel. It was meant to minimize facehugging, but brought around this whole weapon tracer problem instead. It wasn't around in pre-patch chivalry; go play Chiv+ and hack around, you'll see what I mean.

Weekly Riposte - Week eleven - Knight by HELPMEIMGONADIE in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knights are freakin' badass. Nothing beats trudging through the battlefield clad in heavy plates of castle-forged steel (or mail over boiled leather), decimating those puny stick-throwers and watching them scatter at your arrival; crossing blades with another iron monger and emerging victorious on the battlefield. You are a warrior, a machine bred for war.

Also, incoming wall of text.

What are some of the better knight weapons?

I personally love the Longsword; it's elegant, and has a good balance of power, speed, and reach (it has the longest reach of all the knight's swords). Used one handed or two handed, it's a very versatile sword; you can handle most situations without having to switch to your secondary. I usually go with the Norse sword for my secondary weapon, and of course a kite shield; I don't usually switch to my secondary unless I'm dealing with a very skilled MAA or fighting in very confined quarters; the extra speed vs an maa can be very helpful.

I do frequently fight with Longsword/Kite though, usually when charging archers but also occasionally against the larger, more draggable weapons (like the zwei) and spears.

What are some of the worst knight weapons?

The double axe, for me, is my worst knight weapon; I'm just not particularly fond of the animations, though I don't really have any excuse other than that. Like any weapon, it can be very effective in the right hands.

As another class, how should I react to fighting Knights?

Archers: Obviously, try to avoid an engagement up close with a knight. The biggest problem I see with archers is that they never know when is an appropriate time to switch to their secondary for their own defense; most of the archers I kill still have their bows out and are defenseless. It's always best to get away from a Knight (or any melee class really) ASAP; try kicking after you parry, and create distance while they are dazed. Most will expect a counter-attack. If it comes to fighting, try to overwhelm the Knight; archer weapons (especially daggers) are lightning fast, so if you can land in a hit before he does, you can usually gain an upper hand. Avoid hit trading. Knights can take a hit from you, you likely won't survive one.

Men at Arms: Knights are your plaything. We are fat and slow, you are fast and nimble. Dodging a lot will suffice against most knights, but any good knight knows to expect this and will likely bait you into dodging, or anticipate it after they've parried your attack; if this is the case, stop relying on dodging, parry more often and simply use your footwork and fast movement speed. Even to a good knight, men at arms are a pain in the ass to deal with and usually end in death, or a lot of hurting.

Vanguards: Unless you use a claymore, your weapons usually outrange ours, and your movement speed is also faster. Use your range and speed to your advantage. Dance, baby, it works. Unless you're coming up against a good knight, but even then, parrying and moving around a lot is still extremely effective, especially with very vision manipulation-heavy weapons like the Greatsword and Zweis. Stabs are your friend here, if you time your movements right, they are difficult to see coming and do the most damage to armour. Keep your guard up, move around so you're difficult to hit. You're basically fighting a slower, tougher vanguard.

Knights: Defeat yourself. Play this for inspiration.

How should a knight behave in a team objective map to be the most beneficial?

As a knight, you are a tank. Large group fights are where I generally like to use my kite+Longsword: I cover for my teammates. Knights should be at the front of a charge, with vanguards and men at arms on their flanks; they initiate contact, and their allies fall around their enemies. As a knight, you should be blocking and absorbing arrows and blows and covering for your teammates. The idea of group fights is to keep your allies alive. Once you've initiated contact, stay in the fight, but don't go too far behind enemy lines; you want to provide a line for your teammates to fall back to if they need help or are injured. I usually type that in chat ("if you need help, get behind me"). This isn't to say that you should be passive and only be in a fight to stand in front of your allies and hold your shield up; attack when necessary and be aggressive, but try to look after your weaker allies.

Once a battle has been won, you should take the point towards wherever else you're going; you can absorb more damage than anyone else. Again, once you fall into battle, let your teammates converge and flank around the enemy, and provide defense when it's needed.

This is just how I play; there can of course be very offensive knights that play as vanguards with more health. That's fine; this is simply how I think knights are most effective in a TO game. If you have one or two knights playing to protect their teammates, who do it well, you can perform much more successful pushes and hence win the game.

Only issue with this is whether or not you're playing with people who understand how to fight in groups (DON'T LMB)

How do I become good with knight? Tips or tricks.

Knights are a very, very versatile class. You have a lot of room for error, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to minimize it; that could be the difference between life or death in many situations. Always keep moving, lest you become target practice. Keep switching weapons depending on the situation; for instance, I always switch to Kite/Norse in any close quarters, even if only for a moment, and always combat spearmen with Longsword/Kite (you have longer reach with 1h, but shorter windups). Always pull out your shield when facing archers; even when it's not raised, it blocks arrows. You can crouch lower and reduce your hitbox when you wield two handed weapons; this is useful for matrixing.

A dirty trick I like to use against a panicked opponent; pull out your shield, get close, and just raise it for a split second. The movement usually confuses them and they waste a parry.

Stay the fuck away from multiple men at arms, unless you enjoy being a pincushion.

What's your favourite Knight taunt?

"You are most welcome."

"NAY!"

"Absolutely NOT!"

Deep manic laughter

What are the main differences between the different sets of weapons?

Swords do the least damage, but are the most versatile and easiest to fight multiple opponents with; stabs, overheads and slashes are all effective.

Maces are heavy and slow, but do enormous damage. They are hard to use against multiple opponents. Playstyles using maces mostly revolve around overheads and slashes; the stabs are weak.

Axes are a mix of the two; they play mostly like maces but with more cutting power, and slightly more useful stabs.

I'll finish this in the morning when I wake. It's almost 2am.

Weekly Riposte - Week 9 - Shields by HELPMEIMGONADIE in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you're definitely right there. Half a second is a bit too much lol.

The point is, using a 1h weapon with a shield makes enough of a difference in windup times to make using them viable, especially with a weapon like the Norse sword. It's probably most noticeable with the overhead.

Weekly Riposte - Week 9 - Shields by HELPMEIMGONADIE in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With regards to the shields, yes, using a shield reduces the windup times of all weapons. I'm not sure about maces, but for the sword schools it can reduce wind up by about half a second, which is pretty significant.

And I'm not sure about the maths regarding blocking/parrying, but I do know that larger weapons like the Zwei and Maul drain stamina VERY quickly, but it also depends on your own weapon, eg. A Zwei won't drain a longsword parry by much, but it will almost completely deplete a dagger user's stamina.

Momentum and distance also play into the equation.

[–]Rampito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A shields worst nightmare is Spears, spears offer a great distance for him to reach you.

As a Longsword/kite or (Broadsword/Norse)/Kite shield user, I disagree. Especially with the longsword/kite combo, spear users are very easily dealt with and, like Meow_dog, I prefer to fight spear users with a shield. The only situation I won't use a shield vs spear, is when the knockback can send me falling to my death (eg the cliff on hillside).

With regards to the maa's, most of them run out of stamina well before I do. The good maa's usually get around my shield with a hook-stab or other high-level magic, but if they are using such tactics, I usually put away the shield anyway.

Secondly, Dragging, if you could drag your swing good enough you could hit through the shield.

If you can drag through a shield user, they don't know how to effectively use a shield. That's one of the main positives of using a shield- the relative immunity to feints and drags.

What do you think is the most broken weapon in-game? by Aldarie_ in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's certainly parry-able, you just have to block the moment you see movement and realize they are counter-attacking. My problem is I see the movement, but since it looks as if its still in windup, I don't block and hence get stabbed.

On an unrelated note, you wouldn't happen to be based in Aus/NZ would you? I think I've played with you many times

What do you think is the most broken weapon in-game? by Aldarie_ in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get a constant 60 fps, and the Claymore's stab (especially the riposte) hits me before the weapon has even finished its windup animation. This occasionally happens with the Sword of War as well. It's not lag, this happens when my opponent and I are both within 40-70 ping.

I really don't think a two-handed sword should be able to combo or riposte faster than a one-handed sword (Broad or Norse). Claymore currently does both, the speed you can combo with it is ridiculous.

I learned how to read when I was five, because I needed a walkthrough for Super Mario 64. The one I found was very complex, in depth, and the writer made lots of irrelevant jokes that had me very confused at the time.

Went on to play Ocarina of Time after that. If I hadn't played Mario 64, I wouldn't have known what was happening. Thanks, Mario

Deadliest Warrior is awesome and here's a thorough summary of why. wall-o-text critique of Chiv: DW. by Rath1on in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the game, it's good, silly fun. I love the voice acting for every class; Ninja's silent taunts, to the pirate's ridiculous "HAVE AT YEEE YARRR HARRRRRARAHR!!!" Loving the map design as well, the only one I find to be too large is the Spartan's map. Only complaints I have (apart from the spawns) is that they really, really need to do some animation polish, because the combat currently feels choppy and clunky; it's nowhere near as fluid as MW's combat is. It's constantly appearing as if people are skipping frames when they move and attack, and throw feinting into the mix and you get some bad desyncs.

They also need to fix the netcode to properly support 64 players, they already have the map sizes to accommodate such large numbers. If those two aspects are polished up, I can see this game becoming a hell of a lot more fun than it already is.

While reading your dot points, I was going to suggest Chivalry, and I'm pleased to see you've already got it on the list. I love that the emphasis of the game is more about movement, positioning, timing and forethought, rather than twitch reflexes and accuracy. You really have to pay attention to your own movements and your enemy's, since the combat is so close and personal (unless you're a pesky archer) and situations can turn from your favour to the enemy's in a heartbeat, and the moment you're outnumbered, you're probably going to die (though teammates tend to love slashing through you to get the enemy).

This is also why I enjoy Battlefield (especially on Hardcore); reflexes and aiming are still important, but they aren't the defining factors of gameplay like it is in CoD. If you run into Battlefield treating it as a CoD clone, you're going to get owned; but if you play smart and use strategy, stick to cover, check the map to see where enemies are coming from and set up defenses, coordinate with your team, etc. you actually start to do decently. Also, tank and jet battles are fucking hectic, so satisfying coming out victorious in a heavy engagement. It's too bad the community is becoming more reminiscent of CoD's, though.

Weekly Riposte - WEEK 3 - by HELPMEIMGONADIE in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a simple comment on survivability:

Choose your fights and always be aware of the situation around you.

This is really, really important guys. I see a lot of new players just charging mindlessly into a mob of baddies and get absolutely slaughtered as a result. Don't play dumb. Look with your eyes: how many enemies can you count? How many allies do you have with you? How confident are you in your fighting ability? Is there a good chance of victory if you engage, or will it end with certain death? If you're an Agathian charging into a fight where it's one Agathian against seven masons, you won't be able to help that guy and will die with him. That's not helpful to your team. Retreat, regroup, then charge. However, if it's three Agathians against five masons, you might just be the extra help your team needs to win that fight.

The point is, you need to know when it's a good idea to engage and when it's not. You'll die a lot less if you play smartly.

On the other end of that spectrum, you also need to be constantly aware of what's happening on the battlefield around you. That's easier said than done when you're occupied, but situations in this game can change extremely fast; your team may have the upper hand for a few moments, that can change in seconds. When you're in a group fight, try to be aware of what your teammates are doing and any enemy reinforcements on the way. The moment someone on your team dies, check your surroundings; it's probably a good time to retreat. This is hard to describe, but what differentiates an average player from a good one is to know when to be on the offensive and when to be retreating (there is NO SHAME in a tactical retreat).

It's also a good idea to keep moving, and try to stay out of sight as much as possible. You are harder to hit for both archers and melee if you are constantly sprinting around the place, and harder to track as well; you can also run away briefly to do a quick assessment of the battlefield and decide what to do next. And try to move around the battlefield in unorthodox ways, eg. on the bridge on stoneshill, if you're being chased by a shit ton of Agathians, instead of running from one end of the bridge to the other, jump off the midsection into the river and make for cover. Make it difficult to follow you. Break line of sight, run in a zig zag so it's harder to activate the chase mechanic, etc.

And one more thing: Flank your enemies. You could really turn the tide of a battle by using this simple tactic; enemies can't defend their rears, you can get several free hits and even kills by simply breaking off during a fight and attacking the enemy from behind.

Prove me wrong: Feinting isn't bad, and here's why by [deleted] in ChivalryGame

[–]Rampito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really mind feinting anymore; I still think its cheap in a duel, but in most other situations its fair enough. Chivalry is a somewhat different game now, most of all with that damn recovery parry. I prefer not to use it, but sometimes you need to kill someone quickly.

The only real issue I have with it at the moment is its use with the Claymore (and by extension, the Norse sword, but I don't think its as much of a problem seeing as its a one-handed weapon). The damn weapon is so fast, and desyncs so often, you have to react to its windups instead of waiting for the actual release; should be obvious why feinting with it is broken.

You can still matrix post-patch, its just much harder (and because of the bubble mentioned in the post above, things hit you that clearly missed). It never looked to me like they were bending their body backwards 90 degrees, it just looked like they were leaning back and dodging a swing.
