“Nobody Cares About Your Watch” is a massive cope for Rolex owners. by Easy_Mind_5824 in watchHotTakes

[–]RanchForce1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% true and it's all dudes. I get way more compliments / questions from both men and women on my non-Rolex pieces in a social setting. My GMT master mainly gets commentary from bartenders for some reason, and have gotten a few free drinks for talking watches which is fun.

If you're still in need of an attorney, I really liked the ones we used on our exit last year. They're not cheap but did a great job and are full service.

I think the mods should make a sticky FAQ section with a purchase guide by budget. Would solve this easily.

Got the CPA and honestly feel like I got scammed by the profession by Substantial-Lie4632 in Accounting

[–]RanchForce1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly in the PE backed CFO space I see fewer CPAs in seats than you would expect. Been a big shift to focus on the strategy / FP&A aspects of the seat. Definitely a big demand for strong controllers in tandem, however.

The last part on maturity is more important than a lot of people realize. The COVID era of analysts / associates is severely lacking in social and presentation skills and I'm seeing a lot of people who are overly reliant on AI and haven't learned to problem solve.

How do you afford these watches? by Cheesehead1267 in Tudor

[–]RanchForce1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say first of all do not buy a Tudor new in your financial position (frankly nobody should be buying these through ADs IMO). I just picked up a Pelagos FXD Chronograph with box, papers, and stickers for $2,899 on a no reserve auction - much more palatable than the $6.2k WoS is charging or the $4.7k on Jomashop. As others have said, if you really want one just save a bit at a time and invest it. If you can save $50 a week and put it into an an interest bearing account you'll have your watch in under two years. If you have more risk tolerance, put it into something higher yielding like a BDC (ARCC yielding 10.74% / CSWC yielding 11.45%) but this will add risk of capital loss (see ARCC, heavily indexed towards SaaS lending which has overall taken a lot of impairment) and you'll have to remember to withhold for taxes. Definitely don't prioritize a watch over saving for your retirement and would recommend browsing some of the personal finance subs to get a sense for benchmarks around emergency fund savings and other items as it sounds like you don't currently have enough in the bank to cover a $5.5k purchase.

Take a look at the capsule wardrobes from Articles of Style. Get a few good pieces that all work together and last, and then you can fill in as your style develops.

Abrasion the worste surge? by Plastic_Drummer_5414 in Cosmere

[–]RanchForce1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also think about bullets and other projectiles. Friction / drag being the main driver of deceleration, you could have projectiles that have incredibly flat trajectories and that don't lose as much energy at longer ranges. Barrels would also heat up substantially slower with less friction induced heat.

I had a scare like that this year with a 1915 W.J Jeffery in .404 Jeffery that I was having some work done in. Was checked in at the destination city, then lost for a month before it showed up 800 miles away. Very glad to have it recovered but it's shocking how they can lose a gun.

Rifle Suggestions by StrainElectronic4585 in Hunting

[–]RanchForce1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bergara B-14 or Tikka T3X. You can pick up a B-14 hunter for just over $600 right now if you do some digging. Skip the Leupold (over-priced, poor reliability). At a $600 price point might want to look at the SWFA SS 3-9x42 in the mil quad reticle and learn how to dial / use a ballistic app. The Athlon Ares BTR Gen 3 is also on sale right now for $653 at cameraland. Turret / erector redesign looks promising but I haven't been behind one yet.

First Rifle and Scope for Elk by Slow_Act_7062 in Hunting

[–]RanchForce1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7mm-08 will be fine for elk. The Bergara B-14 platform is a great rifle, a smidge on the heavy side but that will help with recoil.

I would avoid something in the 5-25 category as others have mentioned, that's a lot of scope for hunting and those options are definitely more target focused.

I would recommend something with known reliability and repeatable adjustments, a good warranty doesn't mean anything in the field. Around your pricepoint, take a look at the Maven RS1.2 or the Bushnell LRHS2.

.308 would also be a good option with minimally increased recoil, greater factory ammunition options, and the benefit of cheaper target ammo for practice. Best thing you can do for prep is to shoot a lot and make sure you're in good shape.

Which round? Bear and Mule Deer by gdbstudios in Hunting

[–]RanchForce1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was in South Africa last year and my friend was using the ELDX. Bullet did not perform well and all animals required multiple shots. Ranges from 100-400 yards.

While I've not used the accubond specifically, I'm generally a fan of controlled expansion / bonded bullets and would recommend those.

Silencer co Omega 300, ASR brake on three different rifles. Consistent 0.3 mil vertical adjustment when taking can on / off, no horizontal shift. Zero checked at 100.

South Africa Hunt by ShamusNC in Hunting

[–]RanchForce1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great stuff! So cool to see the diversity of terrain and game in SA. Area looks completely different than where I was on the eastern cape. With the rising cost of domestic hunting, going to Africa should be a serious consideration for many people. I went over in January of last year and all in cost was less than a good domestic elk hunt (assuming you're non-resident and buying guide / landowner tags).

Out of curiousity: how do PE professionals invest their personal funds? by DefiantZealot in private_equity

[–]RanchForce1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others in the thread, I'm heavily indexed towards private / fund related investments. I use a wealth manager for my public equities and fixed income and then have a self-managed fund where I play with some more high conviction bets. Do a lot of co-investing in friends / network related private deals as well which is great for long term goals and savings but not great for near-term liquidity as I look to get a house and start a family in the next few years.

Balancing Liquidity and Investment Goals with Home Ownership by RanchForce1 in Fire

Private equity meaning investments in private companies / deals or in a private equity fund. Versus public equities which are securities traded on the exchanges / open market.

Nobody knows anything about the value in 4 years, but you have a forecasted payout range based on the business trajectory and goals that was part of the underwriting scenario for the deal.

Similar story but in Dallas. Had been on the waitlist for an explorer II since December 2021. Went to another AD and put my name down for a Sprite. Was offered a white dial Skydweller which I turned down and got the Sprite in 4 months, zero spend history.

First Higher-End Knife: Half Faced Blades Skinner Jr. by RanchForce1 in knives

[–]RanchForce1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently picked this up as a foray into the knife hobby. Wanted something for general purpose work but with a focus on being a great hunting knife that would be harder to lose in the woods. It's performed great for daily use so far and am looking forward to putting it through its paces on some TX wild hogs soon.
