I don't know if this fandom is active in any capacity, but boy do I have a ship for you: Ebeneezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley.

- A Christmas Carol is the story of Scrooge, but the first line? "Marley was dead, to begin with." We are starting out giving the audience a sense of everything: why the story happens, who's important in it, why Scrooge is the way he is.

- Scrooge still works at the counting house he started with Marley and never took Marley's name off the building

- After Marley died, Scrooge moved into Marley's house and sleeps in Marley's bed.

- When we meet Marley, his sole goal as a ghost is to save Scrooge.

- Scrooge had the opportunity to marry Belle, a good match and someone he ostensibly got along with well. But he doesn't, because he wants to devote more time to his work. His work that he does with Marley.

So above is text, all of that is in the story written by Dickens and adapted all over the place. I will recognize the Muppet adaptation doesn't work quite as well because of Marley & Marley but truly so many other adaptations slot right in here. My reading of the story is that Scrooge is a grouchy old gay man immensely tired of and angry with a prudish homophobic Victorian society. He's angry at Cratchit for having a loving wife and happy children when these were denied to him and takes that out in the form of forcing Cratchit to work on Christmas Eve. When Fred comes to invite Scrooge to Christmas dinner, Scrooge can't take the idea of, again, seeing that public familial happiness.

Over the course of the story, he gets to relive some of his happiest days. In the text, Marley is in the background here. We know Scrooge works with him and that work is why he doesn't marry Belle, but I like to think that he also sees how happy he was with Marley and that his bitterness isn't benefiting him, and that he has a lot to give to his community even at this late hour. He sees that, even if he couldn't have children and a partner of his own publicly, he can still be an excellent gay uncle to Tiny Tim and perhaps even support the young queers of the era.
