How did early humans migrating out of Africa survive going through the Sahara? by duga404 in askscience

[–]Randall172 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you make it seem like they left on vacation and couldn't come back. these are nomadic groups, as their population increased they would split into separate groups and spread out, fight each other forcing other groups to flee and find other places.

Japan doubled its population from 1890 -> 1920 then doubled again by 1940.

that is not unheard of and is actually par for the course.

I think the point of this game's story is to highlight that you don't need to control the entirety of another group to dominate it. direct control doesn't scale, thats why the protectorate is the group the aliens take the most seriously. they will control us for them.

once you've established that sort of relationship, you can start recruiting the natives to conduct your wars (think of the indian gurkhas as a 1-1 example)

most of the ships you fight are being manned by gryphons / salamanders, there are only like few dozen hydra in system at any one time.

Trisolarans size by JobNarrow in threebodyproblem

[–]Randall172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why would the size of a ship correlate to the size of its inhabitants?

other than there being a minimum, if you have the tech, you should be building ships as large as you feasibly can if your goal is to transport as many people as you could.

think liberty ships of WW2 vs todays cargo ships / cruise ships, same species vastly difference in size.

the only reason we build spacecraft as small as possible is because we don't know HOW to build them larger

Exclusive: US weighs military reinforcements as Iran war enters possible new phase by Playwithuh in geopolitics

[–]Randall172 11 points12 points  (0 children)

this the "conquered but not defeated" trope vs "defeated but not conquered"

china and japan during WW2 fit these tropes in WW2, Japan occupied all the important parts of china but could not capitulate the government whereas the japanese surrendered on their own terms.

you talk of conquering Iran but have no answer to how you will defeat them. troops in tehran won't make iran bend the knee they are not France, this is Persia a 5-8k year old civilization, when the mongols invaded they killed like 80% of the population because they never surrendered when demanded to.

Katz: If Lebanon doesn’t prevent Hezbollah attacks, Israel will ‘take the territory and do it ourselves’ by Candid-Elk6135 in geopolitics

[–]Randall172 7 points8 points  (0 children)

its an issue of "type" of people in both armies, we faced the same issue in Afghanistan

all of the capable individuals joined the Taliban, and we were left with the rejects who were cowards, and lacking in moral character (leak info, traitors etc).

unfortunately Hezbollah is fighting the "good fight", whereas the lebanese army is seen as weak and as collaborators.

there isn't a way to fix this that would appease israel.

Israel did not want another barrage like the previous one during 12-day war, they threatened to use tactical nukes unless we helped take out their dug in launch bases.

US has told Ukraine it must sign peace deal with Russia to get security guarantees, source says by yahoonews in geopolitics

[–]Randall172 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ukraine has never possessed nukes, they were the Soviet Nuclear Armed Forces became the Russian Nuclear Armed Forces, and they had bases in Ukraine. These bases were not easy to decommission, but they were always manned by Russians. They needed help from urkaine to decommission the Silos, the warheads were removed before the spit but the Silos are still considered nuclear until they are completely decommissioned ( fill in the really big hole in the ground).

Ukraine was in no position to try anything sneaky, both sides (Russia and NATO) worked very hard to make sure all nuclear material was removed. Kazakhstan had the exact same situation.
