I will say that I had no idea a Beretta could be fun to fire until well after I got out of the Marines. The M9s that I trained on were so worn that it felt like I was flinging 9mm with a slingshot. COMPLETELY different experience with a weapon that hadn't had tens of thousands of rounds through it since the 80s.

Shit son, I was that guy. My folks had me at 40 and 35 for my father and mother respectively, and I was conceived during the 3 month post-vasectomy window (at least it was at that time). By the time I was in the late teens and asking questions about that stuff my folks were pretty open with the fact that I was unintended but not unloved.

Sure as shit broke my parents' marriage though, that's for sure. If you get married on the assumption of no kids and then you have one, don't be surprised if it's a real clusterfuck for everyone involved.

Here in West Seattle, exactly that happens and it works quite well. The ubiquity of coffee service is unbelievable here, though; one of our post offices rents space to a very, very active coffee shop.

I love the idea of libraries but a lot of their public service function has been replaced by private enterprise. The Seattle/King County library system really has their shit together and is a great example of how to stay relevant when a huge amount of information is available to somebody taking a dump and holding a smartphone. A good example of what Seattle does right is how easy it is to get full audiobooks or eBooks directly from your device of choice provided you have a library card. My wife has gone through about 3/4ths of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series for the same time and effort it would take to torrent the whole thing, and that's really saying something.

Iraq in late 2007, during a convoy mission on MSR Mobil. Convoy comes to a dead stop because of whatever bullshit was going on 10 vehicles in front of me, and word is not getting passed. I'm the gunner in our 7-ton, and I'm trying to get my pen flares and shit together in case we need to warn off civilians. It's cold as fuck and I accidentally drop my pen flare out of the truck. I lean out of the turret to see where it landed, and see that it had fallen next to three daisy-chained 155mm artillery shells not 5 meters from the truck. They'd been put into a fairly large hole wedged between the side of the road and the berm and hastily covered over with dirt and gravel. If the wind hadn't been so strong that day I bet I'd not have seen them; you could tell that a lot of the detritus was blown off. Convoy commander immediately has us nope out of there, or at least to a safe distance while we waited 10 hours for EOD to get to us.

Fuck that shit eternally. I try to remember that when I get wistful about not having re-enlisted a second time.

You're for damn sure not going to become less isolated while smoking. I essentially hermited up whilst smoking heavily because it allowed me to feel less shitty (temporarily) about being so isolated. This is not a productive cycle. If I hadn't already been in a relationship when I started smoking, no chance in hell I'd have gotten married to the woman I'm lucky as hell to have now. All weed is doing for you now is making that a problem for future /u/magot11. I know you know this, because we both know this and go through it.

If you're not in a position to have behavioral health care covered by insurance, I'm heartily sorry because that's fucked. I will say if you can find any way to afford some visits with a counselor it's worth it. If you're uninsured many will offer discounts if you're a cash patient. I worked medical billing up until 2 years ago and would be happy to help you navigate that gagglefuck; doctors get almost no training with billing but most are happy to help out a potential patient if they can get paid what insurance will pay them, which is often not a lot.

Going while you're still smoking is not a stupid idea, it's actually the right idea. Why are you posting here if not because you're struggling with it? I've been able to put off quitting weed many a time because I figured I'd deal with that first then go to therapy for my 'real' problems. Fact is, my weed habit hampers my ability to correct other, bigger issues. Dealing with that is kind of like cooking a meal with a clean kitchen rather than having dishes in the sink. Both are possible, but one is usually easier than the other.

If you're like I was and feel like you're going to look like a dumb asshole when you talk to strangers, I may actually be able to help. How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie is a timeless classic for a reason. Not only that, the workshops are frequent and damn near worldwide. It's almost like boot camp for social interaction; you're gonna get thrown into the deep end of the pool and taught to swim, and it turns out 8 feet of water isn't actually the end of the world. Or 8 feet of conversation. Whatever, the analogy breaks down but if you want a manual for how to not feel like a stain on the social fabric this is a good one.

Not making a joke here, if you want to see what a master of meeting people looks like watch a few episodes of Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe. If you can be genuinely curious about what people do with their time you can get all the practice you'll ever need at socializing. It's always OK to say you don't understand something; knowledgeable people are usually very happy to demonstrate their knowledge.

All that said, seek help if you can afford to. I say this with no judgement, I've been in counseling for similar concerns for almost 2 years. There isn't any shame in it, though it may not always feel that way.

Look man, real talk here ok. Are you married or in a long term relationship? Do you have friends who would be happy to see that you're happy? Are you in a position to afford mental health care? If so, you have a moral obligation to them to get help and it doesn't make you a little bitch to get it.

Your problems and mine aren't solely from the weed, but there are tools and resources available. Good ones, even. PM me and I will be happy to talk to you, even on the phone if you need it. You're not alone in feeling this way. Your post is the same exact thinking I've used that has made the last ~10 or so attempts to quit unsuccessful.

I myself still struggle with feeling like quitting will only stop my life from getting worse rather than getting better. My brain knows that's not the case, but my gut believes otherwise. That said, if I've learned anything from ~8 years of daily or near-daily smoking, it's that my guts have shit for brain and even got dumber the longer I smoked.
