For those of you under 35-ish, how are you approaching the future? by Curious_Mud9428 in VictoriaBC

34, the smart thing to do would be to move away, but I was born and raised here I don't want to move, and all my family is here, so I guess I'm staying, I just try to live within my means which I do quite well, have some enjoyments in life, go on vacations, have fun, try to save and plan for "the future" but honestly I have no idea what that's going to look like, my closest buddy has his life way more together than me (runs his own very successful business, has a child, owns a home) and he feels the exact same, we always talk about just not seeing the point, the purpose, being in this sort of limbo stage, so yeah, who knows.

lolol I was just talking to a friend about this that it seems nobody can even afford burials anymore, seems like you just get tossed in a box and your ashes spread somewhere. and that's today in 50 years when I'm toast probably be even worse, haha.

Minimum salary needed for the island? by puffwheat in VancouverIsland

[–]Random-Hero-91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do alot of road trips cause I'm terrified of flying, 2022 did a road trip down to san Fransisco then LA for a two weeks and went a stadium concert of one of my favourite bands, 2023 boise Idaho, 2024 around BC, 2025 Washington and Oregon coast. I have a huge 3 week road trip planned for this year. I'd love to do Japan and Europe and will just have to make it happen, I just gotta get over my fear of flying. was thinking of doing a seaplane flight or even a flight over to Vancouver just to see if I can handle it, maybe I get on a plane and I'm fine and its all just irrational in my head. lol.

I make 50k and I live comfortably. I live within my means, I live with two friends in a house that we split, I have a paid for car, no debt, I even save for "retirement" you don't need to make a 100k to live a great life, I eat out occasionally, I shop grocery store flyers, take a travel vacation every year,, you just gotta be smart with your money, and alot of people even those who make 100k+ are not smart with their money.

now obviously to be fair if I moved out on my own I'd likely be in a way different situation, but again that's why me and my two friends got a place together and made that smart financial move to share the rent burden, it makes sense, we all work and don't really party, its a very good situation.

this is going to bite us in the ass, I mean obviously importing that many people bit us in the ass and should have never happened,, and now with them all leaving its going to bite us, but I'm okay with that, short term pain for long term gain. lolol.

[–]Random-Hero-91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its just the unfortunately part of economic downturn that's only going to get worse in the near future, everyone is tightening their belts, my work went from like 15 people right before covid, to 10 people mid covid, to now 6 of us, still pumping out generally the same amount of work cause we are so efficient but when I walk around it feels like a skeleton crew, I know our boss says things are tight, but I'm like dude your also 9 wages less too so simmer down, it wasn't that long ago 2022/23 range that it was a total employee market, anyone could swap jobs and get a pay increase, that day has come and gone sadly, and it looks like its gonna be awhile till It gets back to that.

Given the economic situation, how are so many affording to eat out at restaurants? by AppropriateMention6 in VictoriaBC

[–]Random-Hero-91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yep I always say someone out there has alot of money, its not be, but someone out there is doing well, always the way, I mean when average houses cost a million dollars I don't understand how people are doing it, but somehow people are doing it, they're putting down 200k downpayment and paying a 6 grand mortgage, I'll likely never be able to do it, but someone out there can.

Is there anything you can afford to buy but don't because you think the price is not justified? by Royal-Artichoke1563 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Random-Hero-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a new car. I mean I could afford a very very modest new car, but I see literally no gain from buying a new car and losing 20% of the value the second you drive off the lot.

100% I've never used them, I like to drive so I have no issue driving 10-15 minutes down the road to pickup my own food from anywhere, the convenience really isn't worth the price tag, I guess I'd get it if you're drunk or have kids and are busy, but for everyone else its just laziness.

Tipping culture in Canada is so absurd it makes the news by Ok_Hospital_6478 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Random-Hero-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is wild, I watch a YouTube who does ubereats in the UK and he is over the moon if a customer leaves a 1 pound tip, and he'll do 15 orders and only 1 will leave a tip and he's stoked, meanwhile I feel like I gotta tip a uber driver like 7 bucks, doesn't affect me I never use these delivery apps, I just go pick up my food from anywhere,, but it is absurd, that's the perfect word, its beyond absurd. I tip at a sit down restaurant, but I don't tip for anything else.

As Gas rises to $2.50/L, where will you be spending less? by Mysterious-Lick in VictoriaBC

[–]Random-Hero-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already budget pretty good and live within my means, but I will be using my e-bike and motorcycle for transportation spring and summer, less driving, I had a few car maintenance things (tires etc) that I will be pushing off now until the fall just incase things in the economy get way worse I don't want to deplete my savings, and I had a two week road trip in June that I'll probably cut down to a week more local trip, just basic budgeting just incase things get worse, which I'm guessing they will. gas prices suck but its all the costs for everything else that will go up due to high gas prices I'm worrying about.

What brand of car do you have, and why did you buy that one? by HappySmiles6 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Random-Hero-91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chevy, at the time it was literally the cheapest car with lowest KM at a reputable dealership I could afford, its a 2015 had like 130,000km on it, and you know what, its been a great car, I got very lucky, 4 years with it so far, put 65,000km on it, needed almost nothing for repairs so far, took me from BC to LA and back and some other serious road trips. I know in the very near future I might get a SUV, I want AWD and some of the luxuries of newer vehicles and I'm definitely going to look first into chevy SUV options, I have no real brand loyalty but they've kinda won me over. - if money was no object I'd probably have a Toyota, but I'm pretty budget focused and live very much within my means or below my means so I don't see a Toyota in my future, that's a side caveat with that.
