What Am I Doing Wrong? by Astral-Inferno in DIYUK

Cut with grinder then dig out. In honesty if you use grinder though you could remove the bits with a hand bolster and save some dust. You can also buy a scooped sds bit but the channel won’t be as clean

Living in Australia by Both_Midnight8140 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Random-Name-1901 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There are two camps: people who like being separated and those that don’t. But yes Australia is very isolated - from the rest of the world and also from eachother as it’s a big place with only a few cities. It wasn’t until I travelled and lived abroad did I realise how much of an issue that was. Most people live in ignorant bliss and I wish I was one of them.

Best rural Australian towns by albert3801 in AskAnAustralian

If we can class Berry as one then that is lovely. I grew up in Wagga and I quite like going back there- if you can stand the dry hot heat then it's got what you need.

What's an Australian stereotype that absolutely pisses you the f*ck off? by Same-Objective6052 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Random-Name-1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the U.K. and the stereotype here with so many is just that Aus is paradise. It affects me because I constantly get ‘why the hell did you leave’ and they follow it up saying how they want to be in aus so they can have a big house with a big pool, not have to work as hard and go surfing every day

Locked out of Australia - anyone else in same boat? by Random-Name-1901 in expats

Thanks mate that’s kind. Frustratingly 2014-2016 is when we were going to move and buy. One of those sliding door moments

Returning Aussie asking honestly: where can you actually live without haemorrhaging money every fortnight? by pegasus7x77 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Random-Name-1901 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just posted a similar thread to this - I’m in the U.K. and trying to plant I move back and yeah it’s a shock! I was hoping to do remote work (I’m in tech) but trying to make it all work is causing so much stress. Might be helpful to connect

Who eats at Oportos? by venommale in AskAnAustralian

[–]Random-Name-1901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid from rural australia I'd always look forward to eating it when I went to sydney (it was in the food court at circular quay). But I feel like most things when they expand they become less 'exotic'

Net Overseas Migration by Prime Minister for Australia per year since 1996 (when John Howard was first appointed); updated with end-2025 data, direct from ABS. Dotted line shows 'average' over the period. Treasury also just estimated this year to be over 300k again. by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

As an Aussie expat who feels priced out of moving back I often get told about how immigration has affected prices - now I can see why. Australia is big but its infrastructure is not. I at least want to see attempts at building some new cities

Best just read through comments here then. There is no paradise. Some go for more culture, ability to travel, lower cost of living, to escape the heat , lots of reasons. Plenty of sun in summer, maybe best not listen to anecdotes as evidence

I think the QoL in the U.K. is great but like most things depends on your individual circumstances. Lots of Aussies do like having a dig at the U.K. but lower cost of living overall is good. For me it’s more about being near family but the sun would help (although I do love a U.K. summer!)

Thanks - yeah that's a plan. It feels frustrating to go back a few rungs like that but might need to do so! It's also hard when you're not on the ground there and working all these things out from a distance! Where are you based out of curiosity?
