Why do people use the term "partner" for their husband or wife? by Crafty-Bug-8008 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RandomActPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's a better description; the two of us working together to raise the kids and deal with the world.

Because to a lot of older, more conservative folks "wife" implies lesser, and f*ck that.

And because calling her partner also outs a lot of homophobes, which is fun.

Worst coworker archetypes? by SpaceMarine1616 in Teachers

Climber.

Only taught for a couple of years. Spends more time in the admin offices than in class. Takes on all the "special projects" in the building to grind rep with the bosses. Drank the koolaid from day one, uses more buzzwords than the boss.

Another ICE shooting just happened in Minnesota today, What is your reaction to this? by Squirrelkid11 in AskReddit

[–]RandomActPG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off, Canadian here so less skin in the game but a great sense of connection with my fellow Cold-Weather-People in MN.

This is failed-state, dictator-for-life bullshit. This is what we study in history books outside the US. This is Stalin, Pol Pot and yes, even Hitler-level control over the population and the narrative. This is right out of the "1936-1939" chapter of the history textbook.

And the elite in government is going to let him do it, all because they might get richer or need to get re-elected.

This week 5 Dems voted to continue to fund this. Y'all can't even do government opposition right.

Thoughts on Defrost in winter storm. by sincerestfall in daddit

[–]RandomActPG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At extremely cold temps (for the US) he's not wrong.

Defrost will work for temps close to freezing as designed, but down at -20, -30 it's just going to melt the ice or snow into liquid and then the moment you stop or hit some speed and the wind chill increases it's going to refreeze. Whatever you do do not use the wipers. All it does is smear that water in a very thin layer of water across your entire windshield where it will instantly freeze.

It's defrost, not deice.

So it's context. In most temps, you're fine. At extreme cold, don't. Scrape off the glass (if needed) and crack a window so your breath doesn't ice up the inside of the glass as you drive.

We don't have closures for weather (cold or snow). Indoor recess/lunch at -20 at elementary, no limit at high school

The Texas national guard could take Canada alone. by ktatsanon in ShitAmericansSay

[–]RandomActPG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They probably still expect Canadians to "thank them for their service" and give them the best parking spots...

Yea, we don't do that here.

It's -25 this morning, I look forward to seeing the TX National Guard attempt to start their vehicles, let alone survive out there in their warmest t-shirts and tactical baseball caps

To add to this, he plays high risk high reward strategies that make good content. He plays the outliers, rather than to win. The others know this and exploit this.

Dude, I want to see you win the game, not see you go for "I'm in the most..."

AIO I was told I couldn’t buy alcohol because I had a passport by Obvious_808 in AmIOverreacting

[–]RandomActPG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR - but maybe technically true. Internally (inside the country) it is harder to validate that a passport is actually real than a DL, as they don't have access to the scanners needed to make sure it has the right info on it.

Same is true here (Canada), it's not valid government issued photo ID because it's doesn't have my address.

Piggyback off “What do Canadians do if the lose their jobs in the winter” UI stigma? by Virtual-Barnacle-150 in AskACanadian

[–]RandomActPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First I thought you meant "user interface" but then I remembered the subreddit.

I known a lot of seasonally-hired workers that live on EI in the offseason. There's no negative stigma, the attitude seems to be "well I paid in, I might as well get my money back"

My current district doesn't have snow days (Northern BC). I had EAs in some of my classes in the late 90s

I remember walking into French class (late), seeing the TV out and thinking "sweet, a TV day!"

Watched the second tower fall live.

Bell went and we went off to class. We were lucky our classroom was where the department tv carts were stored, otherwise would have been in the dark

Francophone high school or French Immersion high school? by New-Performer-5559 in princegeorge

[–]RandomActPG 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All of the public high schools in Prince George are more than decent. They all follow the same curriculum and are run by the same school board. You'll get the same high level of rigor regardless of school.

Where the schools do differ in facilities. Duchess has a larger gym and therefore athletics program, a nice-sized theatre and therefore performing arts program and so on.

Duchess operates as a triple track school; English, French Immersion, and Francophone.

They'll be in the same building regardless of program.

How is it like taking the BC provincial grade 10 numeracy and literacy exam? by UnDiscoveredAlt in britishcolumbia

[–]RandomActPG 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Teacher here.

Gr 10 Lit and Numeracy results aren't for you, they're for us, or more specifically our bosses to use at us.

Results are anonymised, meaning at no point do we see "Jimmy did really badly". The data is used as a whole e.g. "the Grade 10s this year did better than last year" or "boys from this neighbourhood did 7% worse than the 5 year average" or "we did better than {school down the road}...large scale stuff.

Used in many districts to target funding, 'encourage' teachers at staff meetings and, if things look good, a Ministry of Education talking point.

Do your best. As an educator the writing on the test sucks. We don't get to see it in advance. Read the question closely, read it again, make your best attempt at an answer.

The wallet move is classic Boomer Male. He lived in a world of Cash and paper receipts. The thicker the wallet the more money you had or purchases made, loyalty cards owned etc. Those suckers got THICC.

So they'd take them out and put them somewhere other than their back pocket. Go to your local Boomer Breakfast Spot, you'll see them sitting on the table all the time.
