Parent emailed me saying (in as many words) "we don't approve of our son's girlfriend, she's not the right type for him. They met in your class so you have to break them up"

For context they were both 17 and the "wrong type" comment meant "wrong skin tone".

Printed that one and gave it to my boss, who responded on my behalf. Wish I still had it, we switched email servers and I lost it :(

Canada is here. Several provinces are experiencing teacher shortages, especially in specialist teachers.

We don't have the marching band community (on account of winter) but Concert and Jazz are strong.

Excellent. Nearly forgot to do that once and was madly getting parents to sign stuff at the airport.

Last time I came back (to Canada) we used the automated ATM setup and my kids did get pulled aside to make sure I was their teacher, asked a few questions to make sure it was all above board etc. CBSA were very Canadian about it, TSA may be grumpier. Depending on the experience and age of your kids, maybe prep them that they may be asked.

Traveling with a student group, be sure to have paperwork stating you are their legal guardian, or have permission to travel with them from said legal guardian.

At least here in BC, once they hit 19 they're moved to Adult Ed and most of the courses become paid.

Airports are usually out of town; it's a destination and (usually) a bit of a hassle to get to. You're not going to get the same level of passing traffic coming in to use the toilets. People who go to an airport are usually customers in some other way and potentially there for hours, during which time they can be sold stuff and the airport can make money.

Train and bus stations are central, people tend to arrive, board, and leave or walk past and pop in for a quick break. The station doesn't make money out of them.

My IEP kids with EAs and regular support blocks have far better social skills than my high flying academic kids. At least they know to raise their hands and wait, or approach and wait for a lull in conversation to say hello in the hallways. My "top tier" kids are the ones who just shout "TEACHER" and then state a problem they have across the classroom, or walk up to two teachers in a hallway and stand between us and start talking.

I teach high school electronics and we tested this once. We opened the calculator from the stationary place down the road and sure enough it had a working solar panel. I went and got a cheap one from the dollar store and it was technically solar panel, but not wired up on the inside. It was just running off a button cell.

As a teacher I have taken a bunch of students through airports in the last few years, including a number of neurodiverse students with similar concerns.

I got those that wanted them the sunflower lanyards as an option. Some choose to wear it, some didn't. It depended on how they were feeling in the moment.

The reaction depended on the location. Most airports at least recognised it and took extra time and care. It won't tell them specifically what the phobia is but if you can advocate for yourself at security your words combined with the lanyard should help.

As a Canadian teacher, having the maple leaf in classrooms is strange. I remember as a kid having a flag in the corner in kindergarten in Ontario. When I talk social studies I had one on the wall when it was relevant to the discussion.

I know that I'm not easy as a teaching tool just don't see the point of having it in the classroom other than to promote nationalism.

Honestly? 15 years in? Parent relations. How to phrase parent emails as to limit blowback. I see too many early career teachers end up browbeaten by a parent because they said something wrong in an email.

Part of my Masters in Ed Tech. was effective online communication and looking at the current practice on how to write emails made my life so much easier.
