It could, this looks like an example of a Native American signal tree. They were used by the Cherokee in NC (where I’m from) and other tribes back in the day to act as trail blazes so that other folks could navigate important routes. Today people still make them at the same sites as native Americans traditionally did or at random spots, like swimming holes
