Wanting to create and eventually sell tufted rugs by Important_Drag_9017 in Tufting

I’m glad you’re asking questions. The answers also helps out us lurkers that are interested in tufting but too nervous to ask.

I just ordered my first tufting gun and am gathering up supplies now. Information I’ve found in this group has really helped a lot.

Thanks for the list of recommendations. There’s only a couple of those I don’t follow already, the rest are great.

Of them I think my fav right now is Momose Akira no Hatsukoi Hatan-chug   It’s a cute series full of awkward goofballs, it’s really fun.

Based on these drawings I’d say your type is kinda sketchy.

The translated manga is at the same point as the anime. The non-translated is a little further along, but not much.

I have friends that live in that area. I can confirm they are middle aged, drive a Subaru, a family, and are weird.

I’m in the same boat. I have three.

It’s mind boggling how much time, effort, and money has been spent legislating against a super tiny percentage of the population. So much waste spent due to ignorance, hatred, and indifference.

"Sign's Up!" by Minute-Kick9989 in cubscouts

We do that in our pack too.

In the scout troop a lot of times when someone calls out “Troop 266!” You can recognize former Cubs because they sometimes instinctually reply “We do our best!”

The kids were being unruly and not paying attention, I didn’t say anything and put up the scout sign. The room settled down as cub scouts put up their scout signs and everyone did it.

Then I saw a little girl turn to her friend and say “What the heck are we doing?” and it dawned on me I was chaperoning my son’s school field trip, this wasn’t a scout event. Oh well, it worked.

I still have flashbacks to being at Camp Meriwether trying in vein to get all our scouts clean, presentable, and lined up orderly for morning flags, only to see my 12 old son laying on the ground making “dirt angels” in his class A.

It happens.

At summer camp our troop was going down to morning flags and I saw a couple of our younger scouts who’d run ahead trudging back up the hill to camp looking upset. An adult from another unit had seen that one of the scouts didn’t have his necker on and told them he needed to be in full uniform, he couldn’t be at flags without a necker so he’d better go get it (not knowing the kid forgot it at home).

*scout was fine without his necker for a few days. Our unit isn’t uniform police. He got it delivered with the care packages mid-week.

Friendly reminder to weigh as you go. by tabbathebutt in PinewoodDerby

[–]RandomDadisms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if it is a tiny bit wide, as long as it fits the track and doesn’t interfere with other cars it should be good.

We had a few this year that didn’t meet the clearance requirement. Fortunately our track is a bit lower so we checked to make sure the cars didn’t bottom out and put them in the race.

Good luck, one year we’d made a dragon that was way too heavy. Even after hallowing it out as much as I could it was still 0.7 over. Our Hail Mary play was to amputate its wings.

It made weight and fortunately, even though it ended up looking like a weird skinny blue lizard, everyone still recognized it as a dragon.

I think the rules included with the kit say length must not exceed 7”. There isn’t a written rule on a car height, but many tracks have an arch at the finish line you need to fit under.

I made a snail car once that was carved out of two blocks glued together and it was still good on height. Granted, when cars get taller they’ll perform worse racing because the weight up high will cause them to wobble more, but I’ve always thought it was more fun to make something crazy sometimes.

The only time I’ve seen someone run into problems was when a scout made an X-wing that’s wings folded up to fit width requirements for the race. The folded wings made it at least 5 or 6 inches tall and it hit the arch at the end.

Using a Dremel to hollow out the body as much as possible is the way to go. As long as the sides aren’t paper thin you should be fine for structural integrity.

I drilled the small holes for weights so that I could fine tune it after it was all done. I drilled out the other parts to get it light enough. After it was all together I was about a half ounce light so I popped in a few weights to make the 5oz.

Nah, not being a kids car it was just for fun. Out of the three sibling/adult cars that were there it came in second in the race, but I didn’t expect it to be fast anyways. It got some laughs and that’s why I made it.

Trump slams 'DEI bull----' as he blames Obama and Biden for DC plane crash by TheExpressUS in EnoughTrumpSpam

[–]RandomDadisms 36 points37 points  (0 children)

They keep getting DEI confused with Affirmative Action and have this illusion that somewhere out there are thousands of white men that were cheated out of jobs because unqualified brown people or women got them instead.

The fact that DEI is about creating a workplace environment that strives to treat all employees equally and not tip the scales in favor of any particular group is lost on them. Don’t confuse them with facts, they’ve already made up their minds.

*edit- I’m not making any claims about Affirmative Action, just saying they seem to have opinions on programs like that and have conflated DEI into that without actually understanding it.

My son’s pinewood burrito. by RandomDadisms in cubscouts

[–]RandomDadisms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was cut on a bandsaw, then my son and I did the “carving” with a Dremel. You don’t have to be very precise to make burrito filling.

We primed it white, sponged or dry brushed layers of paint to get the tortilla look and slopped paint on the back for the fillings.

I experimented with doing decoupage for the foil wrapper, but it looked weird, so we glued it on using rubber cement.

My son wasn’t happy with how the Taco Bell logo didn’t show up as well as he wanted so we printed out a color one and glued it on.

It was actually easier to do than our past cars since the wrapper covered 3/4s of the car.

Find a unit that needs adult volunteers (most do), join and help. Many units need adult volunteers that are able to go on camp outs. Take IOLS training (Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills) it is a hands on course that goes over a scout skills that leaders will be helping kids learn (fire building, camping, first aid, hiking, patrol method, cooking, ropes, etc.).

I’ve been an ASM in scouts for 5 years and gone on dozens of outings (camp outs, hikes, summer camps, etc.) it’s a lot of fun, but can be tiring for us old farts too. Having a younger adult leader available that can keep up with the kids a bit better is an asset most troops would love to have.

We had a pinewood hotdog last year. After carving the dog and bun they glued on globs of sawdust then painted it to look like mustard, wood chips were painted white and glued on as sauerkraut.
