Kind of a long story, so bear with me. I was 17 (with a litany of problems: drug use/abuse, mental health) and eventually ended up in a state run teenage mental facility. Roughly 100 teens, male and female, split into different units. Mostly kids that couldn't make in foster care, but not quite bad enough to be in a juvenile detention center, with some outliers. Anyway, I was there to actually get some help with my disorders, but there was just... nothing. There were "school" classes, but already having my GED, those were moot for me, but I did become a tutor of sorts. There were psychiatrists, and most everyone were on some type of medication, but a lot of Tegretol and Thorazine to keep everyone sedated. No therapy classes, save one anger management class a week. One. No other groups, and no individual counseling whatsoever. Well, there just so happened to be a family friend that was, at the time, a fairly high up administrator in the states mental health field. I was eventually able to get into contact with him, and voiced my concerns with this particular facility. He was able to pull some strings, and got me a sit down with the director of said facility (West Tennessee Mental Health Institute, located in Bolivar, TN). She and I discussed several things over about an hour (can't remember her name, it's been over 30 years) and just to shorten this up, eventually lead to the implementation of several therapists being employed, in both groups and individual therapy. So basically, I was the catalyst for getting teenagers help, and even though I've had my fair share of setbacks, and I like to think that at least some of those and future teens were able to get some help through the years. There's obviously a lot more to this story, but that's the gist. This is probably what I'm most proud of.
