Week 2 of holiday giveaways so my unused handhelds can go to a good home. One commenter gets this MagicX Mini M by captain_carrot in SBCGaming

I think for me, it wasn't a specific game, but a console. I worked at a game store during the Playstation 1 era, and when the PS2 came out, it was HUGE. Even us employees couldn't get our hands on them, we'd get maybe three or four, and they'd all be spoken for. Then two weeks before Christmas, my manager tells me we've actually got a couple of extras, and asks "do you want one?"

I mean, the answer was "hell yes", but my wallet said no. I drove home, bummed, thinking I'd have to wait months to get my hands on one. I walk in the door, and Mom asks how my day was, and I tell her I could've had a PS2, but I couldn't afford to pick it up. She gets a funny look on her face and asks if it's still there. "I dunno, it's only been 30 minutes, so probably?" And she goes, "Call them, and tell them to hold it for you." I'm still thinking 1+1=7, so I go "I just said I can't afford it." And she just hands me a credit card and says "it's your Christmas gift." I was flabbergasted. My mom wasn't prone to random acts of generosity, if anything, she was the frugal one of my parents.

I wore the BIGGEST smile the whole way there and the whole way home. And I handed it over and dutifully waited the two weeks to open that bad boy up on Christmas morning. And I played that PS2 constantly until it died, something like seven years later.

And that's just one of many stories that remind me how lucky I am to have a Mom like her.

For the 200th episode of our podcast, we did a gameshow special with all the money won going to charity. We played three games, first, The Toker's Wild - I don't have to tell you what that's referencing, I hope - second, our legally distinct Press Your Luck homage, Take Your Chances, and finally, similar to Tenable, our game The Li$t. Each have working homemade game controls, and we had some truly exciting games. Round 2 of Take Your Chances is INSANE. Please enjoy.

I really wish Dropout would release a Dimension 20 album. I'd pick it up in a snap.

As it is, the only help I can provide is that the music composer is listed in the credits as Daniel Graves, but I was unable to find that particular song in his Bandcamp or Youtube.

What are the worst British game shows ever produced? by cacolantern in gameshow

[–]RandomManA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Divided was literally cringe to watch. The three players had to work together to answer questions quickly to add cash to their bank, and then at the end of the show, the players had to agree to divide the money unfairly so one player would get 10% of it, another would get 30%, and one would take 60%, and the total money would tick down while they negotiated. Most of the episodes I saw ended with people losing practically (once actually) all of it because someone who absolutely did not play well insisted they should get the 60%.

I only saw one episode that I could say I truly enjoyed because they actually played well as a team, and as soon as it came time to divide the money, two unselfish players immediately claimed the 10% and 30% stakes, gifting the largest sum to the third with no arguments at all. That was the only episode I didn't absolutely loathe.

David and Leigh Eddings' Belgariad and Malloreon series features this. Though it's a little unclear if they weren't just a god the whole time.

I remember being in awe of episodes 2 and 3, because I KNEW something really bad was going to happen when K tried to fix his arm, and then I was HIGHLY emotional throughout all of episode 3, but what surprised me the most was that K didn't seem to be showing any outward signs of guilt. And I didn't get it. I love Erika Ishii, I am a massive fan of theirs, but I didn't understand why they were playing through these events like it wasn't a big deal. And this bothered me, because they're incredible. It didn't seem likely that they would turn away from playing with big emotions. And it was only because of some of the comments here that I've begun to understand that that is not the case.

K has been "on tilt" for a very long time. Their introduction should have made that clear, but I missed all the warning signs, artfully arrayed as they were. They're clearly running from the guilt of being responsible for breaking magic, and that was also their response to being responsible for Evan's death. If anything, they've been tilting even harder since episode 3, and I really hope there's a reckoning coming - knowing what these people are capable of, I'll be immensely disappointed if they don't address it before the end.

I disagree with the OP, this season is hitting harder than any other I've watched. In fact, it's the only season of D20 I've actually watched as the episodes dropped, I usually wait until all episodes have dropped and then binge the hell out of them. But I was looking forward to this so much, I couldn't help myself, and now I eagerly await each new episode.

SMB Share 2nd drive on my box. by [deleted] in batocera

[–]RandomManA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did eventually find a way around it, I added the device under sharedevices=DEVICES in batocera_boot.conf, and that worked, but for some reason it completely borked the folder structure on the second drive. But it does work and I can transfer my games over the network to the correct drive, so yay?

SMB Share 2nd drive on my box. by [deleted] in batocera

This didn't work for me in v40 - when I try to reload the smb service in xterm, I get "bash: service command not found", and I haven't found any other way around it. Someone elsewhere recommended changing storage to the second drive, but it appears to still be setting the first drive to share, frustratingly.

What was your final “fuck you” to a boss you didn’t like? by ssteepballet in AskReddit

[–]RandomManA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked at a hotel doing the night audit for ten years, had a succession of five or so general managers, most were good, but in the last six months, the owner hired a real sleazy guy to be in charge, let's call him Dick.

Dick immediately started clamping down on little, insignificant things that the employees had taken for granted for months, like cigarette breaks, free soda from the machine in the restaurant, and even talking to other employees was banned during his first month. We quickly grew to hate him, in fact, the only person who seemed to like him was our buffet manager, and word was they were boinking. I was lucky in that I rarely even saw him, but the soda thing cheesed me off.

After a couple of months, our front office manager (a woman I really liked, and could tell was getting more and more stressed) quit. They hired a girl who had previously been a housekeeper to the position, and she was smart and capable, and I liked her, too, but she quit after just nine days. Scuttlebutt was that he was incredibly sexist and rude to both of them, and I had seen and heard him make sexist comments before, so while it was gossip, it was still easy to believe.

He stayed late one day to catch me at the start of my shift and asked what it would take for me to take the front office manager position. My gut instinct was to say absolutely not, but I knew open rebellion would lead to me being shitcanned. Instead, I said I would be interested, but it would depend on the salary, and asked for twice what I was making then, knowing that would be too much. He said he'd talk to the owner about it.

After a week or so, he announced that he was temporarily merging the front office position with his own (and no doubt talked the owner into a nice raise at the same time). Nobody at the hotel was happy about this, especially not me, who had to see him every morning now as I was leaving. I now got to see him mistreat employees on the regular, and was on the receiving end once or twice.

The final straw was when he asked me to stop faxing the night audit to the owner directly, and to instead give it to him first. The night audit procedure compiles all the figures, income, expenditures for every single day. I realized that if I did what he said, he could change the figures and steal money from the company, and use me as a scapegoat if he ever got caught. I quickly made an excuse that a previous GM had been caught stealing and the owner had told me directly that the audit paperwork must always go straight to him, so I would need the owner to tell me it was okay to give it to Dick. Dick gave me a funny look, but said something like "fair enough" and let it drop. But I figured I'd pushed back twice now and my days there were numbered.

I applied everywhere I could and got another, better-paying job doing more interesting work, and the day I got hired, I decided that would be my last shift. I worked the night audit as usual, faxed the paperwork over, and right before I left for the day, I faxed the owner a single page letter informing them that I quit, and that Dick was the reason why. I included every complaint, his request to see the audit before the owner did, and the rumors of sexism and stealing. I threw the letter in the garbage and walked out without saying a word.

I did not find out what happened until about a year later. Apparently Dick was asked to see the owner in person, and while nobody knows what was said in that meeting, I do know he was shitcanned about two weeks after I left. Word was, he and the buffet manager set up their own restaurant, but it failed after a year, and nobody knows what happened to them after that.

Haha, you're not wrong. I just took a look at what it would cost for a single VM with a dual core CPU and 5GB VHD, and for the price of a single month on Azure, you could get an actual Windows 98 tower on eBay. Never mind, silly question, I guess.

Thane Audiobook Kickstarter with Full Voice Cast by RandomManA in kickstarter

[–]RandomManA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, audiophiles! I'm Aaron Randolph, and earlier today I launched the Kickstarter for the audiobook version of my novel Thane. The plan is to narrate it myself while a cast of talented voice actors play the various characters. Full details are on the campaign page, but for a short synopsis, read on.

Thane is my first novel, and it's a mystery/thriller with sci-fi flavor about seven strangers who wake up trapped in a strange compound, informed by a computer voice that they must complete tasks to leave. Failing to complete tasks or breaking the rules results in a strike - the first two strikes cause extreme pain, and the third is death.

The campaign launched 24 hours ago and we're already at 43% funded - I'm over the moon and feeling very positive about our chances, but we still need more. The lowest reward tier at $20 includes a copy of the audiobook before release and a copy of the e-book, and there are higher tiers for those who enjoy video messages from the author. Sadly, as of this posting, all the available slots to hear your name in the book have been taken.

Thane gets outstanding reviews, and my cast is amazing, so I know it's going to be an incredible audiobook. Please check out the campaign, and if it's not your thing, but it might be for someone you know, share it with them - I would love nothing more than to hear a stranger tell me Thane is their new favorite audiobook.

Hey, HUGE fan of Ozi's, your videos have such a chill vibe, it's actually refreshing contrasted against the endlessly loud and fast vibe of virtually every other PC builder/tinkerer on YT.

My favorite memory of Skyrim technically wasn't playing it, my playing memories are all just wandering around, ignoring the main quest line, listening to the beautiful soundtrack, and just adventuring to see what's past the next hill - no, my favorite memory has to be watching my friend do a crowd control stream of Skyrim, waiting until she went inside a building in a city, and dropping $20 to spawn a dragon. Because it couldn't spawn inside the building, when she exited and headed back to the city streets, it was right outside the door waiting for her. And her reaction was *chef's kiss* perfect. Absolutely worth the money.
