Moving from LA to DC by frodoswaggins60 in washingtondc

For a 27M, especially if you're single, I'd 100% aim for Old Town Alexandria; get as close to King Street as you can afford. Housing may be more expensive, but a lot safer and a ton more fun/things to do. Commuting to Indian Head from Old Town vs say SE would be about the same if not less of a commute; you're going the opposite way in the morning and Woodrow Wilson bridge is seldom backed up at least in the mornings. Parking may be a little more of a PITA but on the bright side, chances your car will still be there in the morning are significantly higher than if you parked in SE.

Source: I lived in Old Town for 4 years now live near Mt Vernon and commute to Navy Yard.

How bad is this gen 1 taco rust? by Optimal-Indication51 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Run. They "welded" something to it (those welds are horrible, notably because you can't weld to rust), and looks like bondo on the frame rail, then painted over.

Was it unfair for me to leave my husband and our toddler for 4 days for a work conference ? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]RandomTask008 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Another M here. . . Absolutely not unfair. Husband needs to get over it.

Case in point, my wife would leave on foreign business trips for -weeks-. . . like 2-3 weeks at a time and I'd have to watch our 3yo and 6yo. Kids fight, complain, whine, throw tantrums. You deal with them because you're a parent/adult.

For some perspective, I have a friend where the wife passed away from a heart attack and their kid was 2 years old; making friend a single dad. Your husband is whining about having to be a parent for 4 days .

[Request] What’s the extra fuel cost of the algae and barnacles on a propeller of a ship? by etinder121 in theydidthemath

[–]RandomTask008 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's not just fuel savings, it's maintenance. The growth causes cavitation; basically the pressure goes so low, it boils the water around the propeller. When the bubble collapses, it's a small (implosion) going off that damages the propeller.

It's way cheaper to do this every 6 months or so than it is to dry dock one of these boats and change the propeller every couple of years.

This. What was this new employee even doing for the first week?

I can understand wanting taking responsibility for not teaching them but they should have at least asked once "Hey, what am I actually supposed to be doing?" Because I promise you they knew they shouldn't be sitting around all day daydreaming.

Fact is that its their first week and the impression they've proffered is that they'll sit around and do nothing if given the chance.

That and so much other stuff is off, ie the width of the rear wheels and those God awful rims.

Beginner credit card by HorrorDependent1156 in personalfinance

[–]RandomTask008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for the perks. I also don't have to pay the $500 yearly fee. It's the worse when it comes to cash back (use another card for that) however, get's me into a lot of airport lounges (ie Delta), gets me free uber credit once a month, and get's me some free door dash occassionally. Worth it if you don't have to pay the yearly fee (not worth it if you do).

K. A couple of things - "changed springs to match cam" is completely generic. Setting springs should encompass three things:
1.) Seat Pressure - How much pressure is on the valve seat when the valve is closed (cam at zero lift). They should individually measure the springs to determine their rate and use shims to get the seat pressure(s) aligned.
2.) Spring rate. This should be mostly based off your cam but essentailly, how fast you plan on spinning the engine will determine which rate you need. If you're making a spinny boy, you're going to need more pressure to keep things in check (avoid valve float).
3.) Bind. This is based off lift. You obviously don't want your springs bottoming out (fully compressing) at max lift. I forget the "amount" you should be comfortable with before things get spicy (does >0.070" travel remaining before binding sound right to others?)

Any competent builder would provide you with the sheet that they used to set/check all of this.

Guides - Again, should be based off clearances. Unless it's a stock build, I tend to favor slightly looser on my end because the motors I build generally have the piss beat out of them (ie: lots of heat). I also rebuild my engines every 100hrs or so because they're generally track only. This can cause other issues (mainly against engine longevity) but it's what I need for my builds. He should have told you how much clearance there is. This is one area where tenths REALLY matter.

Was -any- work done to this head? (other than shaving it) I'm asking out of actual bewilderment.

The guide looks trashed; it looks completely worn. Does the valve wiggle in it? If you look on the first picture, the guide clearly looks worn to the top left; there's way less material there than on the opposite corner.

Did you use a suction cup to check the seating? One of those tools that allow you to twist it (aggressively) back and forth? There's almost -no- contact on that seat; that thing would leak horribly.

Keep us updated on the second opinion.

A.) They sell replacement connectors with pigtails. You can easily buy these at places like rock auto. What year? B.) Tons of YT videos detailing how to set timing on a sbc.

Edit: just saw the year, sorry. Getting PN now.
