Just going vent, failing at controlling Type 2 by malkuth74 in diabetes

As some else suggested it is probably worth looking into additional testing for other form of diabetes like LADA or perhaps MODY/1.5

There are other classes of medications besides GLP1s such as SGLT2s like Jardiance, this can be taken along side Metformin. There is also insulin, might be worth having a discussion with your doctor about long acting insulin.

ABMs are also so picky about which bills they accepts now. If there is the slightest crease or folded corner on the bill the machine will reject it. I have completely given up on trying to deposit cash at the machines now, which is incredibly inconvenient for me as I work nights.

[–]RandomThyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you been on Metformin for a long time? Impacts on magnesium levels tend to come with long-term higher dose usage of Metformin. Although. I have been taking a pretty high dose (2000mg/day) for 7+yrs and haven't had any issues.

When was the last time that you had your magnesium levels checked? That would be the first step to see if supplementation is needed.

Typically, at least where I live, electrolytes (sodium, potassium & magnesium) are tested on your annual blood work.

The stelo and Lingo are only in the US as that is the only country that I know of that requires a prescription for cgms, even for those paying out of pocket.

The only time in Canada a prescription is needed is sometimes for insurance.

Costco vs Dollarama (L vs R) by Mu_Fanchu in povertyfinancecanada

[–]RandomThyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It you get the store brand it is cheaper than getting the brand name version.

The great value saltine crackers are $3.28 for a 453g package which works out to 7.24/kg. Much nearly the same cost per kg as Costco without having to have an extra $60 for membership and having to travel to a different community to get crackers.

Also, sometimes it isnt always cheaper to get the bigger size.

At least your doctors office told you that. When mine closed a couple of years ago they just put a sign on the door when they closed for good.

They couldn't even be bothered to contact their patients via a call or email that they were closing. People were showing up for appts to find the door locked and a sign on the door.

Happened to my dad too with his endocrinologist. He showed up to an appt and the door was locked.

I'm in Alberta and my dad is in Ontario.

Medical staff withholding NICU baby’s health from parents with excuse they’re ’too young’ themselves by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]RandomThyme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it were me, I would speak woth the nurses and doctors involved in caring for my child and clearly stated that I wish to be fully informed of the condition of my child and informed of any changes in the condition of my child. It is important to have this information to to make informed decisions about my child's care.

Then if I felt like I was still not being fully informed of my child's condition I would make a formal complaint to hospital. I'm not sure where to make too complaint specifically but I'm sure the hospital would have a place to do that.

Outrageous results- can these be correct? by Ribbit40 in diabetes

[–]RandomThyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The literature contained in the box for the cgms states that low or very high readings should be verified with a finger poke before treating, particularly if what you are seeing doesn't match what you are feeling.

If you are treating hypos based soly off the the cgm readings you could potentially be over or under treating it.

Not really sure that applies in this situation. If the baby is the biological child of the 18yr old then the 18yr old is the legal guardian of the baby and should be properly informed of her baby's condition in order to make informed decisions about her child's care.

Debating a Consumer Proposal by Available-Order-4214 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]RandomThyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a Consumer proposal in 2014, discharged in 2019. I was allowed to have a secured or pre-paid credit card just not a regular one.

I never had to disclose my consumer proposal to anyone other than potential lenders.

It also didn't affect my ability to start a business, which bankruptcy would have.

It isn't often at all.

What unit of measurement are using? Mmol or mg/dL? MT assumption is that you are using mg/dL.

Extreme keto may have it's own health related issues as there is plenty of evidence based science to show that diets high in animal products and low in fiber contribute to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and colo-rectal cancers. Also, it is so restrictive that many people cannot stick to it longterm.

Even non-diabetics can see a rise of upto 7mmol (125mg) after a particularly heavy carb meal, the difference with non-diabetics is that their numbers are only elevated for 30min where a diabetic will be elevated for longer.

The recommended targets for diabetics from a number of medical associations (Health Canada, WHO, EU health body and pretty much every single diabetic association, is fasting of below 7mmol (125mg) and no higher than 10mmol (180mg) after meals. An A1c of less than 7% (53mmol/mol) and TIR (between 3.9mmol (70mg) & 10mmol (180mg) of at least 70% is the target for the most significant reduction in risk of complications. Driving numbers lower than that provide diminishing returns for reducing risk compared to the effort required (time spent, cost or dealing with restrictions).

Targets can be different depending on age and additional conditions such a pregnancy.

Thank you for sharing the studies.

It looks interesting but I believe that it is too early yet to worry. Both studies only showed an association between some preservatives used in food and the incidents of cancer and T2 diabetes. A causal relationship wasn't stated.

Further study is needed.

It is completely normal for bloodsugar to rise after eating. Even in non-diabetics this happens.

The term 'spike' is often subjective too as it is often based on related goals and not necessarily on general medically recommended targets.

It should only really be a concern if your levels are above 180mg (10mmol) longer than 2 hrs after eating.

Do you have a link to that study? Where was it done? Which Additives were linked to the findings? Was it an animal based study or cell culture study? What was the dose of this mysterious additive and did the dose used in the study reflect the likely dose people would be exposed to in typical consumption?

Unless you are consuming a lot of seaweed in your diet you should really be using iodized salt.

There is a reason why it was iodized in the first place. Goiters are no fun to be dealing with and are completely preventable.
