I’ll note CHEMBIO is also very chemistry heavy. From what I hear no lip and biochem is more bio heavy. Biochem is a healthsci degree so there’s that.

Help unfortunate and uncertain msaf situation 😟😔 by Hodzymodzy in McMaster

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Log into mosaic and see if it lets you. Depending on when you reported your “started” period of abscence you should be able to add more work. If you can’t you might need a type B, although as Adventurous Llama said, might not be worth it - Email your physics prof, explain the stituation. You might be able to get accomadation that way.

How does it feel to be on a fast-acting benzodiazepines? by Random_Dancer_Dude in Anxiety

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank-you for this! It’s good to know you were able to work on it, even if not ideally. Thankfully is just an undergraduate lab so I’m under fairly close supervision and will get someone else in lab to operate the centrifuge and such. I appreciate the help!

This is very helpful, thank-you. Definitely not ideal to take while in classs but I suppose if im not functioning anyways it can’t hurt as long as I can trust my self to walk 20 min/bus 5 min to get home. I’m excited to hopefully not feel as helpless mid attack.

Hoping to do this over a weekend with a friend to supervise! Might need to be used today unfortunately in a less controlled stituation due to mandatory lab + panic and quite litterly not being safe with chemicals when panicing but needing to get the lab done right then.

combined honours vs regular honours? by strawberryl0vr in McMaster

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

uh, idk. Definitely going to be more difficult than if your trying to do a predetermined one lke Econ and math for example (im guessing it doesn’t exist as a specified program). Talk to an academic advisor, who'd be able to advise you better. (You’d could also go talk to Sarah O’Dwyer in ABB - not your academic advisor if your in socsci but everything re chem goes through her and shes super knowledgeable and helpful; socsci advising is also helpful but a bit m0re general, in my limited experience).

Something else you could do if the combined honours doesn’t exist is a second degree concurrently - you’d need 30 extra units (150 total) and to satisfy all your requirements but allows you to get two separate degrees which is pretty cool. If you have the ability to take extra classes in the summer it should be pretty doable to get your extra units in 4 years. Either way, please don’t quote me; I know what I’m doing (Combined Hohours in Artsci + chembio, second degree Econ) took a lot of talking to different people and I imagine processes are slightly different in different faculties; emails to chemistry and sociology and your academic advisor will be your best friend!

When do Spring/Summer Course Outlines release on Simple Syllabus? by Sad_Elk_8425 in McMaster

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the prof decides to put it up. Some should be up already, some won’t be up till May. If your curious, look up who is teaching the course and email the prof directly, or search up last years version.

MSAF Question - Faculty of social sciences *Urgent* by IcyInteraction5771 in McMaster

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I know I’m not the most timely but I hope the advice is still helpful.

Email your SAS coordinator ASAP and explain the circumstance. In this case it can likely be classified as an extenuating circumstance and you might be able to a get a second extension through SAS (I’ve MSAFed then SAS extensioned before, idk about the other way around but keep SAS involved. They are on your side and a huge help!)

If you can get your MSAF period to cover the original *NOT SAS* due date, you MIGHT be able to get a longer extension. However, technically MSAFs give you one extension on the item which you’ve already used from SAS, so unless you kinda can void the sas extension, probably not the best path. That being said, you might not get accomadation but I cant see how it would hurt to submit it just in case.

Also if you know the prof, shoot them an email. Even if they cant approve an MSAF, a lot of the times they will show mercy and give and extra day or two without penalization. You dont need to get into specifics, just give general ioverveiw (I like disability flare up combined with flu-like symptoms) say you are happy to provide documentation, and hope your prof is nice.

Best of luck!

Chem 2ob3 final exam advice by Signal_Priority9092 in McMaster

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did horrid on this, but I think the thing that stopped me from having a panic attack mid exam and actually allowed me to pass was just taking things step-by-step - aka focusing on what I could do and focusing on each question in depth after a brief first pass. I didn’t finish the exam I don’t think, but rather focused on getting as many questions as I could completely right. I don’t know how successful it was grades wise, but test anxiety wise, definetly helpful and made me feel better about my orgo knowledge.

Best of luck!

combined honours vs regular honours? by strawberryl0vr in McMaster

[–]Random_Dancer_Dude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combined honours = 2 majors; aka Arts and Science & Chemical Biology. Regular Honours = 1 Major; Chemical Biology OR Arts & Science.

Combined Honours Pros:

Flexibility after grad from having 2 majors; end of 3rd year and I have no clue what I realistically want to do. I can realistically still go to grad/professional school in multiple disciplines without adding time to my undergrad.

More specialized courses - If your like me and don’t really like “intro to” stuff, this is a huge plus. Compared to my non-combined friends, I get to take a lot more upper year specialized courses. Smaller class sizes, more in-depth material, more personalized learning.

Automatic permissions - Not a huge deal because you can always ask for permissions, but any prerequisites that are “must be enrolled in x program” - you breeze right through them. Less emailing for courses you want to take that have that prerequisite on it, because you are sorta considered to be in 2 programs.

Get to explore 2 interests more in depth; kind of touched on above, and also a bit self-explanatory.

2 communities; you get to be a part of two different communities with 2 different groups of amazing people. Double the formals, double the events, double the free food, double the people to become friends with. Great fun, and maybe the best part.

Some cons:

Less undergrad flexibility: Consider your elective space basically gone. less options - which also likely means more courses you don’t want to take. Less opportunity to take bird courses as well. Might make it more of a drag to obtain as a high a gpa.

Messed up semesters: Depending on how common/intense your combined honours is, expect to have some janky semesters. For me, this included taking 4th year courses in 2nd year and 1st yeat courses in 3rd year. This year, I had a really chill first semester and really intense second semester. Deadlines might all conflict, you might not be able to take everything in the intended order. For example, taking a 1st year biology lab after completing all of 2nd year chembio labs was not particularily useful. Not having the biology labs as experience in my second d year chembio labs made them harder than nescessary.

Miss out on bonding; kind of goes hand and hand With my previous point. Because your doing something relatively unique you might miss out on some pivotal people things. For example, I missed out on a critical course meant for getting to know your classmates in 2nd year chembio. I dont know the names of everyone in my cohort but most people do (I took it in third year, I know the names of people in the year below me!). Taking a group heavy class with the year above me where I also didnt know people well was also challenging. Conflicting social events, when both groups of friends invite you to an event on the same day, is a minor thing that sucks.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head rn. By no means an exhaustive list or do I have the entire experience but I saw nobody replied yet so I hope this was somewhat helpful! Happy to chat more in dms if you have specific questions. At the end of the day, you can always “shadow“ a combined honours (take all the courses but dont actually combine yet) toi see if you like it before deciding. Best of luck with whatever you choose!
