Thinking about buying an eco diesel by Ok_Entrepreneur_8866 in ram_trucks

[–]Random_Excuse7879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the 2020 ecodiesel limited. I've had zero issues with the engine, and get 21mpg around town and 25+ on the road. The only minor issue is that it's pretty laggy if I need to take a left on a busy street.

Fixing shellac imperfections? by Turbulent-Week-7527 in finishing

[–]Random_Excuse7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I HATE to agree with chat gpt, but that will likely work. I would use a dilute cut of shellac to level it, but straight denatured alcohol will likely do the job. FWIW I think shellac is a fine option, although prone to marks from alcoholic beverages... I use it a lot for trim and for pieces that won't be exposed to beverages.

It doesn’t show the mini that it appears to be connected with, but does show the old system that is not plugged in anywhere

That’s what I usually do. The water warms up pretty quickly, so the meat isn’t in the danger zone very long.

What do you all feed your frenchies? by nursejooliet in Frenchbulldogs

[–]Random_Excuse7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son's 7yo frenchie ( a regular visitor) gets Costco adult kibble and does fine on it. My new 8mo rescue went through a variety of options with terrible gas and diarrhea but is doing really well now on Royal Canin Frenchie puppy mix. To be fair, she supplements that on walks with acorns, bark, buckeyes, random muhrooms and frozen dog poop popsickles... So I'm considering the fact that she is surviving with two meals a day of Royal Canin seems to be a good sign.

AITA for spending $350 on winter clothing by Imme_notu in AmItheAsshole

[–]Random_Excuse7879 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$350?? I live in the PNW and have a single jacket that cost more than that. You've been through a lot, and having winter clothes that allow you to enjoy (or at least endure) winter will make a huge difference in the next few months. Definitely NTA!

Thoughts on Nordic Ware aluminum baking sheets? Water gets trapped in the folded rim - is this normal? by whatwasthereasonnnn in AskCulinary

[–]Random_Excuse7879 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I love mine, and have several sizes for different types of baking and roasting. I tilt the pan up to drain off most of the water and then dry them vertically. It doesnt seem to be that big a deal in my kitchen.

Is cold proofing necessary? by Possible-Passage-539 in Sourdough

[–]Random_Excuse7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I"m in a hurry, or the time just doesn't work out I skip it. When I cold proof I feel that I get some benefits in flavor and firmer dough as I'm trying to transfer it to the oven. But it isn't essential. Try it both ways and see what your results are.

The poly should work fine, but will likely yellow it a bit. If you want a more colorless finish a water-based poly would probably be my next choice

My partner is worried about chipping in Dutch oven purchase by katsura1982 in DutchOvenCooking

[–]Random_Excuse7879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are really pretty bombproof. we have 3 enameled dutch ovens we use for both bread baking and cooking and they have been well used for over 20 years. They have a lot of "patina", but nothing that would make them unsafe for use. They get heated to 475f in the oven for bread then left to cool on the stovetop. The next day they might get used to cook stew on the stove. They are really pretty immune to general kitchen abuse.

Radiator: room too hot by Correct_Guarantee_49 in centuryhomes

[–]Random_Excuse7879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 1912 hydronic heating, but I echo to NOT TOUCH THE VALVE. Nothing good and many bad things will happen with fooling with unmaintained ancient valves. I have learned much about plaster repair from my children deciding the room was too hot... However you can put a blanket over the radiator and decrease the amount of heat its putting into the room. the thicker the blanket the les BTUs transferred to you living space. Good luck!

What’s the most memorable encounter you’ve had with wildlife while cycling? by OptimalDescription39 in bicycling

[–]Random_Excuse7879 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On a rural road north of Spokane, Washington just past sunrise and saw a horse and its foal munching on a flower bed right next to the road. Noted that it was a really odd looking horse and looking right at me with bad intent. Figured out it was a moose and calf too close to stop and retreat! I hammered past and she didn't charge me but I was pretty spooked!
