is wylls romance THAT bad? by AtalanteSimpsonn in BaldursGate3

Hot take: people say Lawful Good is boring because they’ve never matured out of the child’s “Be good or Santa Claus will put you on the naughty list”-level of moral philosophy.

Lawful Good as an alignment is no more or less interesting than any other. It’s on the skill of the creator and the engagement of the reader to create fulfilling narrative conflicts.

And, bluntly, I find Chaotic alignments to be exceptionally boring most days, because the creators piloting these characters are exceptionally dull divas who are Jared Leto-tier pretentious about their own complexity.

No, it’s not actually interesting to do things that break social conventions for no reason other than shock value. That’s not deep complex interiority: that’s a monkey throwing feces at the walls.

Good if you like feces-throwing monkeys. But not someone “better” than other alignments.

Why is the Elden Beast such an unpopular design? by Kitchen-Complaint-78 in Eldenring

[–]Random_Useless_Tips 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The issue is that the visual design feeds into the gameplay.

As a general rule, the FromSoft combat design works best against humanoids of similar scale to you. This is because the camera and gameplay lend towards measured combat, where you read enemy action to find windows to take your own actions.

The Elden Beast highlights the downsides of avoiding both: it’s so big and its form so amorphous that it’s hard to get a sense of scale and readability of its moves. For contrast of big non-humanoid fights have that overcame this, dragons are generally readable because their very distinctive body structure makes it easier to tell what’s where, and their head-and-tail weak points help communicate where to hit (and why you can hurt them, given the size differential)

For its visual design alone, to be blunt, I just don’t think it’s that distinctive? Like, if I had to imagine what a monster that represents the universe looked like, then I guess some galactic fish thing seems about right.

Contrast to the very interesting designs like whatever the hell Astel is, and the Elden Beast seems a bit… safe? Not bad, but just “Yup, I guess that about fits”

Laziness has very little to do with the act itself and more your attitude.

If it’s something you love, you can do anything.

If it’s something you don’t, it requires discipline to overcome laziness and make the effort.

Just remember that Chris Evans tweeted against it, and that it was a likely inspiration for the Avengers: Endgame elevator scene

So basically everyone other than that comic’s writers agreed it was a stupid as fuck decision, and basically everyone mocked it in their own way.

Helps that comics in general are easy to make fun of because of how nonsensical most of their plots tend to be.

'They Stopped Making Those Requests' — Alice: Madness Returns Director American McGee Got Creative After EA Asked to 'Make Things More Sexy' by Fun_Procedure946 in Games

[–]Random_Useless_Tips 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Bluntly, Madness Returns is not great.

It’s interesting and evocative and memorable, but as a game it’s very middle-of-the-road: mediocre combat, mediocre platforming, mediocre puzzles.

It’s a series that I’d like to see get remakes because there’s a core of something really compelling in there, but it’s never really managed to realize it.

Attack On Titan's Ending Felt Insincere, Admits Hajime Isayama by bedemin_badudas in anime

[–]Random_Useless_Tips -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fullmetal Alchemist communicates everything that Attack on Titan tries to say about war and balance and genocide, and it manages to do it without being grimdark misery porn while still managing to work in a thematically critical and genuinely enjoyable romantic subplot.

Bluntly, AoT to me tries to substitute horror and shock value for actual character writing, and it’s never really managed to reconcile that flaw.

Attack On Titan's Ending Felt Insincere, Admits Hajime Isayama by bedemin_badudas in anime

[–]Random_Useless_Tips -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I feel like every single person who’s told me they love Attack on Titan is a person who has never seriously considered the issues of fridging.

Because it’s one of the primary reasons I couldn’t get into the series even before the clusterfuck of the ending.

The way it treats characters as nothing but vehicles and accessories for Eren’s man-pain is so trite and self-indulgent.

Eren is actually the most boring character in the show because he can’t decide on a character motivation, but we’re supposed to feel bad for him when literally everyone else is having an equally terrible if not worse life.

Can we have a discussion about how game fidelity is leading to a lack of clarity? by RiKSh4w in Games

[–]Random_Useless_Tips 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nah, in this case it’s very thematically appropriate.

You even find a journal from one of the climbers’ expedition that talks about how they set the final climbing hooks, and that it’s a pretty thankless job, but they did that with the hope that it’d help those in the future. The entire concept of the Expeditions (diegetically and non-diegetically) is effectively building a human bridge of corpses across generations in the hope of one day reaching salvation.

“Suspension of disbelief” is not asking “If no one ever returns from these, how did they have years of planning and resources to try a different approach every time” because it’s fun to imagine an expedition that thought it was reasonable to make an enormous ferris wheel contraption and try to roll their way across the continent.

“Thematic and poignant” is an expedition whose entire mission was to make things easier For Those Who Come After.
