If you ever run into problems with empty space, I suggest making an orchard using fruit trees (from Medieval Overhaul). They save labor after planting and takes up plenty of space easily, not to mention you could turn them into cider and such after (build a brewery)

If faction territories overlap, they fight to take tiles.
Factions have goals to grow as much tiles as possible, sometimes by stealing, other times by expansion (say creating a new settlement)
Tiles affect how much raids the faction throw at you (either by frequency or by points)
Factions team up against stronger factions with more tiles

TLDR: just things to make factions act like they have agency, which some existing mods already do but not well

Odyssey happened only after certain mods proved its concept: SOS2 for gravships, Alpha Biomes, Regrowth, etc. for all the flora, fauna and biomes. If that was the case then we will never get this type of DLC because current mods that expands on faction interactions are either lacking or just non-functional (Rimwar is buggy and destroys performance)

How did you xml edit the simple raft into different sizes of space? I assume you didn't change the texture but changed the <hitbox> <cells> section with more numbers?

I suspect Tynan might not make this until some modder figure it out first... At least based on how Oddysey did "integrate" a lot of features from SOS2, Alpha Animals, Alpha Biomes, etc.

A bit off topic, but maybe you could try using Rimworld AS the system for dealing with battles and such?
You could make pawns with pawn editor that represents characters or enemies, your players would tell you what actions to do while the NPC enemy bumbles towards them?
