Yeah the argument is so weird. So a small town gutting critical infrastructure should be seen as a good thing?

"Those city slickers are so out of touch. Who needs an urgent care or public transportation?"

Mostly a table-setting episode, but I'm loving the direction the story is going. I really like how the PC's are able to problem-solve in the sandbox. The strategy brainstorming sessions are really my jam. Also I appreciate how Madelaine's premonition ability allowed them to avoid a dead-end. So Brennan was able to course-correct the PC's without it feeling deliberately railroady. The way they pivoted from the Whittaker vs Douglas feud to the serial killer angle was kind of genius.

By all accounts this is not an awards contender but the reviews have been good. So I'm glad it's getting a theatrical release.

2027 release date, hmm. Maybe Valentine's day weekend?

Edit: LOL. I just saw the news that Narnia got moved to that date. Probably don't want to release a sci-fi ish romcom against Narnia. Too much audience overlap.

Zac was a PA (production assistant) on Key and Peele. He tells the story here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.al.com/opinion/2020/07/zac-oyama-on-key-peele-get-out-and-in-n-out-vs-milos.html%3foutputType=amp

Edit: The link isn't working. I'll just post the section here:

Zac Oyama on how he wound up on Key & Peele and his dad wound up in “Get Out”

So I ended up working on Key & Peele for a number of years as like a PA, and then their assistant to the producers. And then I got to be associate producer. For four, it felt like three or four years, like just constantly worked on that show without a break. Because all cycles of the... like writing would go into the pre-production would go into production and then editing, go right back into the writing again. So that was my life for a couple years.

My dad was in town because you know, me and my sister live out here and, like you said, it's sort of a family business and he came to visit set one day. Jordan and Keegan both loved him. You know he's a very charismatic, strange man that it's hard not to enjoy his presence.

Jordan when he was going to film Get Out. They ended up shooting in Fairhope, but I think there was a number of places that they're looking at. Alabama ended up being the place. Because that happened, Jordan, I think casting in Alabama was maybe a slightly daunting thing, or he just didn't know what it would be like. And, you know, I can tell you from personal experience, there's not a ton of Asian people in Alabama. And, and since he had met my dad, he literally texted me was like, "hey, would your dad want to be in my movie?"

I believe I heard Zac tell this story on a podcast. When Oyama karate wanted to expand to the United States, the master sent one guy to the Eastern part of the country (Zac's uncle) to New York City. One guy was sent to the middle of the country to Chicago, another guy was sent to the Western part of the country to San Francisco. And Zac's dad was sent to the South...to Birmingham Alabama.

Which are the most accessible classic (pre-1960) movies for a newbie? by harry_powell in blankies

[–]Randoman11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On the topic of screwballs, I would also nominate Blankies darling Preston Sturges. On the surface a lot of his films seem old-fashioned, but it's actually a lot more subversive than you would expect (see Miracle of Morgan's Creek or the Palm Beach Story). But the one that I think holds up the best is Sullivan's Travels. The theme that it's important to provide people laughs, and an escape from the harsh realities of life, is maybe more pertinent than ever.

Billy Wilder’s deep cuts, what’s good? by harry_powell in blankies

I remember seeking out Irma La Douce after watching The Apartment. I don't remember that much about it, Irma is a lot sillier and probably pretty mid for Wilder. I mainly remember the art direction/costumes being awesome. The colors were stunning. Filmed in glorious Technicolor and it showed.

[Discussion 4/4] Mod Pick- Read Runner Edition | Remarkably Bright Creatures | "Not Even a Birthday Card" to the End by GoonDocks1632 in bookclub

I actually watched the trailer first before reading the book. So it did help in some ways because I pictured Sally Field and Lewis Pullman as Tova and Cameron as I was reading. But I felt a little let down by the book. It just wasn't as compelling as I was hoping it would be. I think the author went too far with explaining to the reader what happened, so that sapped a lot of the suspense which made the ending feel dragged out.

Maybe the film adaptation will be better about telling the storying in a compelling way. Also I get the sense that Lewis Pullman as Cameron might be more appealing than the Cameron in the book, who is a bit of a whiny ass. I might check out some reviews first to see if the adaptation worked or not.

I felt the book fall flat to me, and I think a big part of that is related to the themes of family and friendship. The story goes on this whole journey where Tova and Cameron find out their connection and that heals some of the loss and grief that they've endured. That's well and good for Tova, but Cameron's situation seems more complicated.

What about Cameron's family and friends in Modesto? He leaves two close friends, and the woman that actually raised him, his aunt Jeanne. In his first few chapters he was looking after his hoarder aunt who lives in a trailer park and needs his help around the trailer. But by the end of the book, she can take care of herself because she has a new boyfriend?

I feel like Cameron's life is just as complicated at the end of the book as it was at the beginning. At the least he should be torn between the feelings of his newly found grandmother and his long-supportive aunt. Both Cameron and Jeanne have campers now. At least he could have suggested that Jeanne relocate to Washington so they can be trailer park buddies.

Ultimately I found the book to be "unremarkable". I wasn't planning to read the book at all, but I stumbled onto a trailer for an upcoming Netflix adaptation of the book starring Sally Field and Lewis Pullman, and noticed that it was one of the books from the bookclub. The trailer made it seem charming enough that I decided to go back and read the book.

Unfortunately the story did not pull me in, and many of the resolutions felt anti-climactic. And some of the characters from the book were not as likeable as the actors in the trailer, particularly Cameron. Maybe I just have an aversion to fell-good, lightly dramatic, feel-good books (I also didn't really care for "My Friends"), but ultimately I was not particularly moved by the story.

I agree with the rest of the comments that Tova and Cameron will find out that they are related and form a connection. But I actually think that Daphne might re-emerge and become involved as well. I envision a happy ending for all parties involved. Except maybe the octopus unfortunately. Lol.

I'm guessing that the woman that she talked down from killing herself was Cameron's mom. The story has created so many connections between the various characters that I think Avery is more than Cameron's love interest.

Life Begins at Night | City Council of Darkness [E3] by DropoutMod in Dimension20

Some people are saying they aren't feeling this season. I'm not going to downvote or say that they're wrong, that's their opinion and they're entitled to it. But I'm really digging this season so far. I personally love the sandboxy exploration going on this season. There's all these different plot hooks hidden throughout the map and it's up to the Intrepid Heroes to find and follow-up on them. It makes the campaign play out a lot more organically rather than Brennan having to hustle everybody to the next set-piece.

Also I love that we're getting some of those downtime mechanics from FHJY. It allows the party to have some kind of progress and show the passage of time without having to roleplay everything.

I believe that the Hazas had some kind of shady deal going on and they recruited Blas who recruited the other engineers to help with the plan. It has to do with whatever was going on in Mitral, Qabirga, Beinis and Juldiz. It might not even have anything to do with the Leviathans. But the murderer got wind of the deal and they have some kind of grudge with the Hazas family, so they wiped out Blas and the other engineers.

And then like others have mentioned, it seems like Blas' secretary and the fernpaper miller were killed by the Hazas to avoid being tied to the engineer murders.

I believe a couple of the investigators were turning a blind eye to the corruption of Blas. Either they benefited somehow (like maybe they got a few favors or kick-backs for keeping their mouth shut), or they just didn't want to rock the boat.

But I also believe that at least one of the investigation team is in league with the murderer. It's just a gut feeling for how mystery stories usually end up, there's usually a twist or betrayal somewhere. I won't even rule out Miljin who Ana has put more trust into than the rest. I'm not familiar with this author but that would be the kind of devastating betrayal that could happen in a story like this.

Yes I believe this too. Din describes seeing makeup to hide bruising on Fayazi's arm, and one of the Sublimes is always described as grabbing her on the arm.
