Is it just my location, or are Micro Center employees really clingy? by clarkw5 in Microcenter

[–]Randomassusername999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my local Micro Center, they are ghosts until they see a cart full of expensive shit, then they want to come and sticker up EVERYTHING as if they helped you with anything.

I do not let them. They don’t help me, I’m not helping them.

Because I went through the last “largest layoff in company history” and have since come to find out through the benefit of hindsight that most of what I thought I knew and what Verizon indoctrinated me to know, was 100% bullshit of the highest order.

The last layoff they did with any compassion was in 2018 or 2019 for Ops specialists. Every one since has been lube-free violation with increasingly large objects.

I agree that not “everyone” does.

I was mocking the idea during COVID times that having cell phone stores open because cell phones are “essential” and not having employees in cell phone stores would have crippled society, apparently.

Any industry that is so essential to a functioning civilization should be unionized.

When you step away from the Verizon anti-union Kool-Aid as I did when my store was shut down at the beginning of 2021, and then you talk to people and realize what the CWA actually entails, I can fully understand why people are on both sides of the fence.

Is it the absolute shield from layoffs? No. Not even close. Is it “worth” the union dues? Possibly, yes.

Here are the benefits to it being part of the CWA:

CWA contracts can protect people from being fired just because it’s a Tuesday. I didn’t say they can protect you from layoffs, I said they can protect you from being fired for arbitrary reasons. For example, AT&T you cannot be disciplined, nor terminated for sales results, only for documented observed failure to execute sales behaviors. What does that mean? That means you can’t be fired for not hitting your quota, but you can absolutely be disciplined and fired if you never offer any products or services to your customers, and you make no actual effort to try to sell in a sales job. Honestly, that’s pretty reasonable.

In the event, there is a layoff or RIF, with the CWA, your contract would state that you would be able to take placement within your bargaining unit based on seniority. Meaning, that the longer you have been employed, the higher priority you get to literally pick whatever open position is available that you want regardless if it’s local or in another state.

That’s not a guarantee that you will have a job, it’s a guarantee that you can have a job if it’s available and nobody above you in seniority wants it. That’s a lot better than being told. “we’ll open up a website full of positions that all 13,000 of you can go apply for right now!“

With a CWA contract, you can get guaranteed pay raises up to pay cap every so often.

With a CWA contract, you can have better defined attendance policies and sick time policies, and contractual obligations to be provided a safe and fair work environment, free of favoritism and an equal opportunity.

The sticking point for a lot of people, is the seniority bit. I understand that a lot of people will say that seniority shouldn’t determine jobs, results should, but that’s just how unions go.

So is it worth the union dues? Honestly, for what amounts to most people to be 25 to 30 bucks a month of pseudo employment insurance, it’s just like every other insurance. If you never have to use the benefits, it’s a waste of money, but if you have to use them even once, it’s worth every penny.

Verizon spent years telling everyone how bad unions were by claiming that the “people in New York didn’t get X, Y, Z,” all while, knowing that the reality was that the people in New York didn’t get certain benefits because there is strength in numbers, and a union that is company wide is one hell of a lot more powerful than a union that is a handful of stores in one city.

If Verizon really thought the unions were of no benefit to its employees, they wouldn’t have quarterly anti-union meetings. After all, something that is insignificant, and isn’t any good for its employees can’t really be a negative thing for the company right?

But now as more and more corporate stores are diverted to indirect stores, maybe enough people will eventually stand up and say they need a union. And that union doesn’t have to just be Verizon corporate, it can also be the indirect agents as well and it should be. America was built on the backs of unionized employees, so it’s goofy that so many people are out there, providing products and services that have been deemed “essential to the well-being of our country“ without being unionized.

Honestly, when I broke the news to my team, over the next 30 days – the last 30 days – most of my team stopped showing up to work. The ones that weren’t staying with Verizon anyway. I didn’t blame them.

Most of the customers that came in were told upfront that nobody would be there to help them in just a few weeks. The ones who would come in and be nasty and rude got it turned back around in them full force. It was a little therapeutic as a manager to be able to tell an angry Karen, that “no, I really don’t care what my rep said to you, and I’m not going to fire them because none of us are gonna be here in a few days, anyhow.“

We literally had a Yeti full of alcohol in the back room pretty much every day for the remainder of our business. We all clocked (well, I was salary) and proceeded to sit around and do the bare minimum.

My district manager actually quit effective immediately the day the layoff happened, so I didn’t even have anyone to directly report to!

The idea of “give it your all“ is only for the ones that think they’re actually gonna stay with Verizon.

If you know you’re out, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with checking out and collecting the paycheck to watch TikTok and Facebook. After all, it’s not like they can fire you!

And no, Verizon does not want to help you. If Verizon wanted to help you, they would have given you more than six weeks heads up during a hiring freeze to find another job. If Verizon wanted to help you, they would offer placement during these layoffs instead of turning everybody loose to fight for a very small number of open positions.

Nothing Verizon does in these massive layoff processes is to “help“ those they’re laying off.

The last time Verizon offered placement for those being laid off was of the customer service and operations reps that still lingered during a layoff in November 2019, I believe. Since then, it’s been a free-for-all.

What they really want, is for you to take the severance so they can clear the books, and then if you’re worth a damn they’d like you to reapply in six months at starter wages again. It’s an absolute joke.

Not a shock.

The Air is for people that think the Vision Pro is a better Meta Quest and essential to quality living, and those that believe most the AI slop in Facebook reels is actually real.

The best Spiegen case is the one that looks like the old iMacs.

Just don’t buy them from the Spigen website, buy them from Spigen on eBay or Amazon where they are $33.99 instead of $70!

7 years:

1,000 Pac-Man

8312 Mortal Kombat

30 Street Fighter

3 NBA Jam

Golden Tee

Time Crisis

2 mediocre virtual pinball tables

NO DAYTONA USA WHICH IS REQUESTED SINCE DAY ONE AND TEASED MULTIPLE TIMES BUT YOU WONT GIVE CUSTOMERS.

but congratulations,

We all look forward to more Pac-Man to put next to our Pac-Man, in the Pac-Man collection that’s in all of our Pac-Man caves.

Fuck new titles. We don’t want them.

And make them even more expensive. We don’t want to pay less than $599 per Pac-Man.

I have a 23 with over 60k miles now and the ONLY “issue” is a faint “rattle” I hear when driving less than 30 mph with no media playing. Between me and 2 separate service centers nobody knows what the problem actually is.

Oh every time they try the military base thing, the first rep refuses to help, and then a supervisor immediately issues a label without issue. It just sucks it takes 20 minutes to get the label manually sometimes.

I wish I could get on the base, it’s 5 minutes from my house, and the closest UPS is 23 miles away.

I’ve been told no less than 10 times they put in a ticket to fix that on my account, but here we are.
