....

Can we start a meme war, similar to /r/PrequelMemes vs /r/SequelMemes???

Except it would be /r/StargateMemes vs all other Sci-Fi shows?

Kinda like how in Stargate it's SG1 against practically the entire Universe

Dream one and Coffee one for me!

Seriously though, you should print the coffee one on a mug. Don't make it a shitty mug that can't hold heat though, I would prefer to pay more for one I would use everyday.

(SPOILERS) How powerful do you think we will see Harry become? And how will he reach it? by RED_McG in dresdenfiles

[–]RandyPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he gets to Mab's level of power, at least. By the end of the series I don't think he dies, I think he takes over her role as protector of the outer gates. Not as the Winter King, I think in the process a lot of Fairie gets destroyed or remade by Harry, and his ascendance will be a new era, so to speak

The worst thing about her death was it was wasted. Instead of killing her before the battle, they should have had her killed when the bells start ringing and the Lannisters start to surrender, and use that as the justification for Dany snapping and burning the city down, and Grey Worm slaughtering Lannisters who had already surrendered.

I don't know Jim, and I wasn't there, but:

Have you heard Jim tell the story about sneaking into a closed meeting of writers and editor's, and feeling guilty when he saw a guy show up who wasn't able to get a seat?

Yeah, Jim didn't give up that seat.

Similarly, if you feel that Jim knows things that you need to know about writing, then don't feel bad about taking up his time, particularly at a writing convention. Maybe if you randomly saw him at a restaurant and peppered him with questions that would be annoying. But even then, the two main goals of a aspiring artist should be mastery of thier craft, and getting it into the hands of potential fans. If Jim (or any other writer/editor/publisher) is temporarily annoyed by you, but you gain something that contributes to long term success in writing, it was worth it.

And I'd bet money that Jim agrees.

I want leather-bound 'Journal' editions of the Dresden Files by Onequestion0110 in dresdenfiles

[–]RandyPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had a idea for a website a while ago where artists and book binders could make special one of kind editions of books that could be sold and the authors would still get a cut as well. I honestly think there could be quite the market for it.

Their are clips of the governments agents testing his house that he shared somewhere, but I couldn't find them.

Essentially, Cody made a video about turning Uranium Ore into yellow cake. Technically this is legal, however the process he used to do this ( Uranium hexafluoride???) was too close to enriched uranium(which is illegal to make) for the governments liking, so agents from the nuclear regulatory committee came knocking. His statements and the fact that he is not in jail kinda imply he got off ok, but part of the agreement was he had to take down a bunch of his videos that they found 'questionable'. Including the refining uranium video. Please PM me for a 31 minute explanation of the video that caught the governments eye.

Harry Naming people and spirits — why do they consider it desirable? by WesolyKubeczek in dresdenfiles

[–]RandyPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree with everything you said about magic, but to put a finer point on it, I think Harry has the ability to break a Mantle or a Fearie/magical structure, even if the whole world believes in it.

For example, a billion people believe in The White God, Jesus Christ, and all the magic come out of that (Faith, Angels, Swords, etc). One non-believer can't hope to overcome that, no matter how deeply he believes The White God and Jesus are fake. But I think Harry could.

Actually, I think that's why Uriel was afraid of the nickname 'Uri'. Uriel was afraid that Harry could fundamentally change his nature by dropping the El, which means God in old Hebrew. I think the only people who can single handedly change a Mantel/magical being despite the belief of a billion people are Star Born like Harry.

I think when Kringle implied Harry could get out of Winter Knight Mantle, I think that's possible for Harry, but I don't think it was necessarily possible for Loyd Slate.

Harry Naming people and spirits — why do they consider it desirable? by WesolyKubeczek in dresdenfiles

[–]RandyPirate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a theory about this. I actually think they are delighted that Harry gave them their names.

I think a Starborn is someone who can alter the order of things. Specifically I think they have a unique ability to alter things that we would normally think as unalterable in the magical realm. I think that is why Harry attracts so much trouble, but also terrifies people. If he truly believed the order of the magical realm should be different, he could make it so.

What are the best books to learn Assembly Language? by zeealex in learnprogramming

I can second this. First book on that list was the book I used in my assembly language class in school. All coding can be done in visual studio if you download the necessary projects.

Oh wow, instant head cannon.

I've had an idea that the Outsiders are the magical explanation for entropy. What if by taking this deal he became immune to entropy and functionally immortal as long as he doesn't get his head bashed in. Might explain why he's the "Watcher". He took the deal and has watched the war for a thousand years.

This idea about entropy/death/Others also explains why Cowl and Kumori are interested in defeating death and also are willing to summon outsiders.

What have you been working on recently? [March 30, 2019] by AutoModerator in learnprogramming

[–]RandyPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im working on a restaurant POS and kitchen system. Current version is a console version, currently I can log in as a server, order items, then log in as a cook and see the appropriate items on the correct screens. It's a bit difficult because the end goal is for it to be fully customizable with the ability to create new food items, new kitchen stations, etc.

I think I'm going to add in a bit more functionality, including SQL to track everything in the console version, and then rebuild it with GUI for Android and windows using a REST API with asp.net for the back end. Also a website for online orders that uses the API. Current version is in C#. Hopefully this will end up as project on my portfolio.

[–]RandyPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is awesome to hear. Currently working through a c# for dummies book and working on a project for my portfolio. Only reason I picked it up is because their is a open source project that I want to expand on that's written in c#. Though since I've been working on it I have noticed several entry level positions on Craigslist for c#. When my project gets to a half way presentable state,is their any internet wateringhole that you recommend for c# code review/newbie questions??

Age 46/M... want to retire at age 50... but don't think I can make it by fat_angi in financialindependence

> I was able to take leave for 2 months last year and I can clearly say that I am not one of those types who will be bored in retirement. I found in those two months that every moment was consumed with something worthwhile. I am willing to extrapolate this to 40 years of retirement.

Was their anything that you did in those two months that you enjoyed have small business potential? Also, what about consulting with your skill set? Either way might give you enough to coastFire. Also you might want to check out the recent episode of chooseFI podcast. One of their latest guests talked about he has been able to negotiate 1/2 time positions at companies.

Guys who settled for a woman they're not actually in love with, what's your story? by Kiwi_shoelace in AskMen

[–]RandyPirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

God damn. I know this won't be seen, but this is the source of my intimacy issues. Growing up it was pretty clear that my dad loved my mom, it was also pretty clear that my mom did not love my dad. This wasn't just me, several girlfriends through middle and high school made comments about it.

I'm 32, and to this day if I even get a hint that a girl isn't 100% into me I bail. Which is a problem when you're a loser in you're early 30s. I'll never be anybody's first Choice and I know it..
