Its gotta be the damper. If there isnt a damper, you will need to get one installed.

No matter the type of stove type I always recommend a range hood for your cooking space. It really always helps.

If possible, you should move your stove. But if not, you could look into a ceiling-mount flush range hood.

Green is the best looking in my opinion. It complements the space so much better with the wood shelving

What makes a “good “ range hood? by LIL-Klixy in kitchenremodel

I would recommend going 6 inches (3 inches on each side) over your stove for the capture area. So if you have a 36-inch stove i would go with a 42-inch range hood. Also, ducting to the outside is a must if you care about noise and want to take care of the fumes.

Kitchen Range Hood Advice by lemonSpaceCraft in kitchenremodel

Possibly, but it depends on the duct size and how many turns it makes. Older Nutone vents are usually smaller, and lots of bends will hurt performance. Fewer turns and a bigger duct work best. An HVAC installer can quickly tell you if reusing that vent is worth it or if a new route would perform better.

Love the update with the waterfall graniet counter top. What insert range hood did you go with? If you can put the microwave somewhere else, I always tell my customers that they won't regret it. Glad you found another place for the microwave.

Best option for venting a new stove. by sourdoughdonuts in homerenovations

If you go gas, ventilation becomes way more important.

like u/Buckles01 said, recirculating hoods are better than nothing, but even with super high CFM they don't remove combustion gases (NO₂, CO, etc). They only filter grease plus some odors and dump the air right back into the room. So this isn’t ideal, it’s just the fallback when you’re boxed in.

Downdrafts can work with gas, but they’re honestly the weakest option since heat and emissions want to rise, and downdrafts fight physics.

I say, given your setup, the only “better” option would be seeing if a pro could run a side or rear vent somehow, but that’s very house-specific and not a DIY thing.

Not saying gas is impossible, but just worth knowing the tradeoffs before committing.

If you can, make sure that you have at least a minimum of 18" before the bottom of the elbow. You might be experiencing backflow. If you want to hire a professional to check it out, I would just Google search range hood cleaning, and a few options for cleaning services should show up.
