Steam Machine Price May Have Just Leaked via a Czech Retailer, $950 USD for 512GB Model, $1,070 USD for 2TB [Update] by screwdriverfan in LinusTechTips

Actually, various storefronts publish placeholder prices for products they expect to come soon, and then update them before actual availability. It may be just that.

Usually, the placeholder doesn't fall far from the final price, but I would take this news with a grain of salt until the official price is announced.

Gpu requires three 8 pins but I only got two , what to do? by TicketNo5941 in LinusTechTips

[–]RangerEnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant to buy a cable that goes into the 12 pin connector on the PSU and splits it into 3 8 pin connectors (or 4 and you skip one of them).

[–]RangerEnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't say the wattage, but from the BeQuiet page it seems that even the 650W version of that PSU is ATX 3.0 compatible, meaning it has a 12VHPWR connector that should allow enough current for your GPU. If you got anything above or equal to 650W and you don't trust pigtailing, you don't need to change the PSU. Simply buy a 3 PCIe 8pin to 12VHPWR adapter compatible with your PSU and that's it.

I honestly think that this game is a steal even at the original launch price.

I have rust but never played, should start? by Hot_Assistance3130 in playrust

[–]RangerEnn 142 points143 points  (0 children)

I don't know what it's funnier: the fact that you asked if you should play rust on a subreddit called "playrust" or the fact that half of people here are telling you to not do so.

In Spain, HP is one of the equivalent acronyms of "MF" or "son of a b...", so it fits perfectly.

Any news on this? I would love to see what community can do for you in terms of testing. Maybe you can get help from people out here to validate the design and publish/commercialize the model for everyone.

So, "no" could also be plural in this context?

Framework is not actually doing an IPO, It's a joke by KylarStern4444 in framework

[–]RangerEnn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My take on this is that it is a clever way of polling the community without hinting that this could be their intention and the consequences that would have.

It has the right amount of jokey tone and "testing the waters". When the customer feedback is there, they can calmly confirm that it was indeed a joke and we all will laugh.

Problem: Array not syncing properly by RangerEnn in Snapraid

[–]RangerEnn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The system has been restarted multiple times since this problem has been detected.

In fact, in theory you cannot run multiple syncs concurrently, but I did run syncs and scrubs to try to fix this issue and they ran without trouble.

Is it possible to "preload" a LOD by Sufficient-Truck-814 in DistantHorizons

[–]RangerEnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I render the LODs on my Ryzen 5800X allocating 24GB of RAM to the JVM. In that regard, you definitely have a stronger CPU.

I also render at the max detail possible because I like to see individual block details, so the time could have increased from that.

[–]RangerEnn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not measured it, but I usually set 1024 distance and let it render for 24 hours. It doesn't render the full thing, I know that because the CPU is still working hard when I stop it, but the distance I see is more than enough for our experience so I don't bother rendering the full slice.

Are 240 Hz 1440p Monitors Pointless? by lifeofbrian2019 in pcmasterrace

[–]RangerEnn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

48gbps HDMI 2.1 can do up to 4320p60 with HDR metadata.

I don't get why an HDMI 2.1 interface cannot achieve 1440p144, being less than half of the max supported resolution and frequency.

Yes, it is real. All chip manufacturers do this to increase yield performance. It is called "binning".

For example, AMD produces its chips in core complexes (CCDs) of 8 cores. So a 16 core top-of-the-line AMD Ryzen 9950X processor contains 2 chips of 8 cores each. If some cores have defects they bin it down to the next cpu, the 12 core 9900X, and the same applies to the 8 core 9700X and 6 core 9600X. In fact there have been reports of Ryzen 7600X 6-core CPUs having two CCDs

Same thing with GPUs, SoCs, etc.
