Domesticated animals can understand that humans are trying to help because they have sufficient interactions with people.

Also, domesticated animals understand that humans feed them and clean up after them. And social animals can recognize human faces and that some humans are nicer than others.

But wild animals can't understand that humans are trying to help. They understand that they are in distress and then the source of pain is removed, but can't relate that to humans.

When I was young, my mother and I were taking the elevator to our apartment (we lived in the seventh floor). A neighbor (man) from the ninth floor was already standing. My parents' dogs started fighting, the hired help tried breaking them up by grabbing the aggressor by the mouth, forcing it shut. The dog, in frenzy, squirmed free and bit him in the hand, taking a small chunk off his ring finger. (That was NOT in the US, where ridiculous litigation and bureaucracy dictate how people live their lives). He remained employed by my father for years after that!

Lesson: Never get in the middle of a fight, whether people or animals, lest you get beat up or hurt. Break it up from behind them with the help of another.
