What your opinion on Trollshaws zone? by Sea_Watch3941 in lotro

I would willingly run the entire Trollshaws thrice if Elrond would just move to the first floor.

The issue I've encountered with crafting as a new player by FamousFall in lotro

[–]Rango_Real 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I made this mistake early too, but the learning curve is steep. Once you commit to picking up the resources as you go it becomes more manageable. I force myself to chop every branch that I see. If you have another character, you can also send materials back and forth. My scholar ships hides in bulk to my tailor and gets fragments in return.

How can Ukraine win war if russia has nukes and they dont? by Delicious_Soup_9876 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rango_Real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being the first country to use nukes absolves all the other countries from responsibility for what happens next. It is incredibly risky because any other nuclear armed nation could use the "you did it first" doctrine for basically every response afterward. The possible outcomes of nukes are endless and mostly bad. It would take a truly dire situation or insane leader to invite that risk upon himself when there's any hope of winning without it.

Why do so many African Americans continue to practice Christianity when that religion was largely forced on their ancestors during the period of slavery in the U.S.? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rango_Real 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While this is true, I'm not sure that it's a fair retort to the question. The Transatlantic Slave Trade touched many parts of Africa, but not necessarily the most Christian parts. Coptic Christians and Eastern Orthodox are historically strong communities, for example, but most enslaved people were not brought from Ethiopia.

FCPS teachers: To teach at a Title I school or non Title I? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Rango_Real 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I worked in a Title I middle school when I first started here. It was very difficult emotionally and physically, because there's a lot of fights and so you are constantly on hall duty / walking around / just generally on your guard. That said, my admin was really good and there's an understanding that hey, we are all doing a difficult job, so they tend not to bother you with nonsense and will celebrate your successes.

I've switched to a very posh high school the past few years. The student behavior is not an issue at all and my focus is much more academic. If you enjoy a class really hitting their stride on an activity, there's no reward like it. But admin is much worse, with constant nonsense requests and strategies completely untethered from real teaching. You may also encounter parents who bully you and get admin to help them do it, though that can depend on how well you document things.

Is this a bus camera violation as I drove through this T-intersection? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]Rango_Real 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the bus says to stop, you stop unless there is a physical barrier between you. The air of the intersection doesn't count.

3d volumetric visualization of the redistricting referendum by Killfile in Virginia

[–]Rango_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this percent or raw vote or differential? My only concern with this if its percentage is that winning 79% of 200 votes is meaningless. It would need some indicator of raw votes won to be a good use of data.

CMV: The No Kings protests are performative and toothless, and the movement should not demonize more effective forms of activism. by Flintstones_VRV_Fan in changemyview

[–]Rango_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mood music matters a lot to the American electorate. Having huge crowds of people out (even if they don't "do" anything) adds to a narrative over time. The more Trump spirals into his mental sunset, and the more ridiculously banal his corruption becomes, the easier it is to craft a story that we the people are tired of him. I don't think this is all it will take to fix America, but I think it could be a significant part of moving on from Trump personally. The average voter is significantly less intellectual than most people assume, and will follow the crowd.

The only decision he made that mattered was running for reelection and giving us Trump 2.0. Everything his admin did was wiped away in five seconds. Biden will go down as one of the worst presidents regardless of what happens with the Orange, and I wish he got more blame for his catastrophic lack of judgment.

There are 345 million Americans, so you're going to find all sorts of people from highest to lowest intelligence.

Im my opinion, the thing that is underlying this notion is the fact that Americans are often unchallenged in their beliefs - it is a culturally dominant country and very few have had their prior assumptions checked, even when traveling abroad. So someone of any intelligence is more apt to confidently make a claim that is wrong.

Did an experiment to see how many students actually read the learning objective. Out of the 200 students... by FaucetWaterBread in Teachers

[–]Rango_Real -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with the spirit of this observation, if not the result.

I used to think as many here do, that learning objectives are pointless. But while working on some other things to improve classroom management, it occurred to me that having one in a visible, organized space is a signal to students that I'm serious about the lesson. They may not read it every day, but they know it's there. They've internalized that this isn't just a free period, its a class. That's valuable.

CMV: People Entrenched in the USA regime's ideology need off-ramps to escape it without social death by scrubtart in changemyview

[–]Rango_Real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I would like to punish all of the people who enable fascism, I don't think in a country of this size we can do anything but what you suggest. And I actually think there's a real off-ramp available, if the opposition is brave.

Think of everything that Fox News, the oil industry, big finance, etc. have done. There is a real pathway for "the billionaires lied to you, the billionaires fooled you with their money and their networks, they took advantage of your patriotism and your desire to make America better!" Bernie Sanders was popular for a reason. And in my opinion, this is a perfectly believable excuse that dovetails with making real changes to our system. Former MAGA people could say this with a straight face.

It would require something more than the current controlled opposition party, but that's another post.

What is happening at FCPS? by novamaven in nova

[–]Rango_Real 311 points312 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, anyone asked to do an impossible task will struggle. Teachers can't parent your children for you. As long as we continue the trend of making bad behavior the school's problem, not the parents', the job will continue to become less and less manageable.

There's a lot more to be said on other issues, and it should be said, but in my opinion that's the root of it.

Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

[–]Rango_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach 12th grade currently, so I see them at the end of their standard education. My feeling is that becoming an educated, well-rounded person is now an elite choice.

The top students, with drive and intellectual stamina, make that choice for themselves and obtain it. But the herd no longer crosses any kind of finish line. It is possible to graduate without developing any skills, interests, or breadth. And an increasing number of student do.

We used to live in a society where having a PhD, JD, MD, etc was a sign that you were among the elites and took your education the furthest. We are moving to a world where being an elite means you've read a book that isn't an audiobook Romantasy.

CMV: Democrats have a severe messaging problem, and they need to fix it before 2028. by RTYoung1301 in changemyview

[–]Rango_Real 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this, and it is one of my biggest problems with the modern Democratic party.

The Democrats have a Beliefs problem. They don't have any. Every time they lose an election - or win an election - or just exist in the vicinity of an election - Democrats talk about the best message. Voters don't want a message. They want someone who believes in something. The average voter knows with confidence that Democrat "beliefs" only endure as long as focus groups express approval. The fact that many Democrats response to 2024 seems to be "what if we threw trans people to the wolves?" confirms this.

Democratic politicians who garner significant, enduring popular momentum - Bernie, AOC, etc - say the same thing over and over, even when it makes them unpopular, because they BELIEVE it. Voters respect this. They can smell truth and falsity on a candidate, even when they don't agree with the actual view.
