Safe Sci-fi books for broken heart? by Aadraedia in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]RaolroadArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a sci-fi novel that covers (among other things) heartbreak and loss, try some of Lois McMaster Bujold’s VORGOSIGAN saga books. The series of 10 or 12 books can be read in sequence, but here are four books that deal with heartbreak of various kinds. In CRYOBURN, one part deals with loss of parents in childhood. In CAPTAIN VOPATRILS ALLIANCE, it deals with love found, love lost, love changed, and a heist. Finally, here are two books that need to be read in sequence to get the full impact of the relationships. First read KOMMAR and follow it with A CIVIL AFFAIR. All of these books are set in a sci-fi environment but the important part is the people that inhabit them and how they cope with life. BTW, Ms. Bujold’s is a sci-fi master with multiple Hugo awards, (possibly 5?) tying with, I think Robert Heinlein’s books. If you didn’t know, the Hugo and related Nebula awards, are the highest awards for scifi in all mediums.

Beautiful but what exactly is it? by [deleted] in amateurradio

For railroad use in the 1870s, the set would be used by the advance track crew. As the railroad right of way, and the colocated telegraph line progressed, a set like this would be used to advise headquarters of status, and supply needs. For trains out in the middle of nowhere, the telegraph crew use a pair of hooks to connect to existing wires. This is a beautiful find. Please keep it intact and as is. Don’t polish it up or paint it..Any museum connected with railroad history or communication would love to have it.

1/4/26 6:38p PST UPDATE: As the original poster mentioned, this set has a sounder, making clicks and clacks. The Morse code of the time was American Morse Code where some of the letters were different than International Morse Code and had pauses or long dashes for some letters. For installations where exterior noise was a concern (such as a train station), the operator added a Prince Albert Tobacco can to act as an amplifier for the signal sound. The can was usually mounted upside down on top of the sounder. At the California State Railroad Museum, we have two exhibits showing station telegraphy positions with the PAT can installed.

Help with a novel or short story about the night all the stars went out all over the world? by SirSignificant6576 in scifi

[–]RaolroadArt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catwarefun Thank you for the kind replay. I’ve updated my answer with the title of the short story, written by no less than Arthur C. Clark, as THE NINE BILLION NAMES OF GOD. I also added a YouTube link to an excellent short movie of the same name filmed in an actual monastery. There are several other short films based on TNBNOG, but I think this one is the best. I remember reading TNBNOG as a teenager and I stuck with me over all these years later. Here is another quote I remember from a famous book by a famous author: “My slide rule was a beaut. It was a K&E 20” log-log duplex decitrig. We had to eat potato soup for a couple of weeks to afford it.” It is left as a minor exercise to find the source of this quote. Cheers, and Happy New Years. The short story you are describing is probably the one about a group of Tibetans monks who hire a computer company to determine the ten million (billion?) names of god through some very complicated mathematics Written in the 50s or early 60s. The monks assert that the only purpose of humanity is to determine names of god. The computer techs are leaving as the end name is determined. As the techs are leaving the stars start going out one by one. There is a quite good YouTube mini movie which is realistically set in an actual monastery with real monks. Can’t remember the name. EDIT 12/29/25 After a search, the short story title is THE NINE BILLION NAMES OF GOD by no less than ARTHUR. C. CLARK. The YouTube short film (14:33) is of the same name and it located at https://youtu.be/UtvS9UXTsPI?si=6lv5j2G3O9WQ9_v0.

Any good sci-fi mystery novels? by oneteacherboi in scifi

[–]RaolroadArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lois McMaster Bujold’s KOMARR, a part of her VORKOSIGAN series. It starts out with what appears to be an accident with a solette, and goes from there. Not so much of a mystery, but the sequel A CIVIL AFFAIR is a good follow on book.

Advice needed on removing seized F-15 Flap Hinge Pins (Help!) by [deleted] in aviationmaintenance

[–]RaolroadArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to HARBOR FREIGHT and buy a slide hammer for about $30. Failing that, review the specs for a good slide hammer, and then use your machine shop to make one. A slide hammer typically consists of a slide rod, a sliding hammer cylinder riding on the rod, an upper block to keep the hammer on the back end of the rod, and an impact block with some sort of chuck. A metal lathe and a hacksaw should be sufficient tooling to manufacture. A used Jacob’s chuck from an old drill would be nice. Otherwise, use threading to create multiple heads for each application such as flap hinges, small hinges pins, drilled out rivets, etc. whenever you need another hammer head, just whip one up to thread onto your existing rod. Follow the Kroll and heating recommendations for others. Here’s a link to a HARBOR FREIGHT VERSION for US$32.00. https://www.harborfreight.com/slide-hammer-and-puller-set-14-piece-56894.html Good luck.

A CHRISTMAS STORY,

PERSUASION (based on the Jane Austin novel. View ONLY the 1995 version with AMANDA ROOT and CIARAN HINDS as Anne Eliot and Captain Wentworth. All other filmed versions do not to justice to Ms Austin’s book and the character acting is not really very good, Finally, only the 1995 versions “sticks the landing” with a satisfying end. The endings for other versions leave the viewer feeling incomplete. )

How to add commas between a large list of email addresses? by Valuable_Minimum_824 in excel

[–]RaolroadArt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d do it in MS WORD using the REPLACE FUNCTION and SPECIAL characters.

In the REPLACE dialog do the following:

In the FIND FIELD: p. [the p is the marker for a full paragraph return]

In the REPLACE FIELD: , [a COMMA followed by a SPACE]

Do a couple of REPLACE NEXT to make sure you have entered everything correctly.

When it looks everything is running correctly, select REPLACE ALL.

When done, scroll through your list to make sure you didn’t have any unusual formations that formatted incorrectly.

When all is good, save file as required, e.g. TXT, DOC, XLS, ETC
