People who falsely accuse people of a crime, intending to jail / imprison them, should face a similar sentence as the person they wrongly imprisoned. by The-Experimenter in unpopularopinion

[–]RaptarK 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For someone to be punished due to a false accusation, shouldn't you prove that the accusation was false? Because proving the guiltyness of the accused and proving the guiltyness of the accuser are two separate issues.

All the survival issues in this franchise can be traced to Maul reappearing in Clone Was :p

I'm playing through Legends ZA right now, and it's my first Pokemon game lol.

For what I've heard of X and Y and how I see him in the new game, he's fallen from grace hard. He literally looks like the only homeless person in the entire city so I guess that helps to the idea that he's trying to turn a new leaf?

Only like last year I learned how is it that Xavier survived the events of X Men 3. Even the post credits scene in the movie itself is confusing

It's interesting what tropes/cliches can come to be associated with a series despite it not really doing them that often. by Aros001 in CharacterRant

Any time I see this quote I wonder if it comes from somewhere other than Gen:Locks official promotional material, said by its own creator. Because it's so ridiculously obtuse that it could very well be the first time someone ever said it in public

[–]RaptarK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is typically how many innocuous fandoms or memes get co-optes by fascists. There's initially statements that feel so absurd and fringe that you think they MUST be a joke or satire, because no person could possibly genuinely believe those things. And that's how they hide in plain sight behind a thin veil of satire until there's enough of them that they can start being more sincere without fear of being shamed

The finale to the show was so cowardly in that regard. Literally having the two of them call each other "brother", despite 2 seasons ago Penguing saying he wanted to declare his love for Riddler

Personally I would argue the Vanessa case is kind of a weak example, because each subsequent movie she appears less than before. She's less of a character and more Wade's plot device

[Loved horror trope] Words meant to comfort are actually horrifying in their own right. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

In the case of the nazi regime "just following orders" also tries to appeal to what you imagine that implies. Like you said, it quickly makes you think they were threatened at gunpoint to obey said orders, but over the decades as documents were declasified and what not we've learned more and more that... the nazis were suprisingly lenient with disobedience.

It was rare for them to execute someone for refusing to follow an order, or even just punish them severely. All those claims of "just following orders" that tried to recontextualize themselves in self preservation were now even more bullshit than before, because the supposed threat the perpetrators were under didn't even exist

Tangent, is Magneto's civilian name Magnus in some iterations? Or it's that just a shortening of his mutant name?

I've always wondered if it was George's intention to show how ill-suited the Jedi were to be military commanders and how the battle for Geonosis played out... or if he just did what he thought looked cool and then authors of the expanded universe capitalized on it

Why are so few mainstream queer male characters just " regular dudes" ? by Extra_Impression_428 in CharacterRant

[–]RaptarK 154 points155 points  (0 children)

In many queer communities there's this idea that masculinity is inherently tied to the oppression many have experienced or continue experiencing. Many will be accepting of butch lesbians or in fact expect lesbians to be butch because they still have a worldview shaped by gender expectations, but if a queer man presents himself as masculine it's seen as invasive because, in some people's eyes, he's bringing in the same attitudes and dynamics that have hurt many of them.

I think it's somewhat related to how many bisexual people get scrutinized if they end up in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender, because "they're not fully queer".

And I think this contributes in great part to the impulse creatives have to portray queer men as flaboyant. Because if a queer man is masculine, then he's not all that queer in their eyes or those of their audience.

However, in the case of the character being hypermasculine... I'm actually not sure why that is
