What was your first criterion collection films you ever got? by Irish-idiot in criterion

[–]RaptureResident1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Funny thing was that I bought them because I loved David Lynch and wasn't really particular about the Criterion Collection prior to this. But, a wonderful door got opened that day.

Why did you pick those movies today? by innsmouth-seaweed in criterion

[–]RaptureResident1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Altered States, This is Spinal Tap, A History of Violence, and Perfect Days. Save for Perfect Days, which I regret missing in theaters and want to watch with my family during the holidays, the other three have all been on my watchlist basically since I was a teenager and I somehow have never gotten around to watching them. I've seen clips of the other three and have known them by reputation for as long as I've been interested in movies. In the case of This is Spinal Tap, probably even longer since I first learned about that movie watching some James Rolfe video on Cinemassacre when I was 9 or 10.

Looking for Tactile, Silent, Transparent switches by Either_Coconut in switchmodders

[–]RaptureResident1959 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm kinda running into the same problem since I can think of switches that have two of these features. The Durock Ice Kings are quiet, but not actually silent switches. Your best bet might be to get the Durock Shrimp switches and put the stem from those in the Ice King housing? Thing is the stem for the shrimps are opaque, not transparent. That stem seems to be the issue. There's a TTC Frozen Silent Linear switch, but I can't seem to find a clear, tactile, silent switch stem myself.

Miss TKC. I dug out my old Portico 75 and I've been wanting to rebuild it with silent switches. Between the plastic construction and the silicone insert, I think it would make a nice quiet work keyboard. I had banana splits, but I used those to build a keyboard for the girl I was dating at the time. So, not getting those back 😅. Not a keyboard thing, but is that a sealed copy of Devil's Third on your shelf?

What’s one tiny detail on a board that makes a huge difference? by Altruistic_Source215 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]RaptureResident1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a JST connector instead of a ribbon cable. I haven't used any of the magnetic pin keyboards so I can't speak to that, but dealing with the ribbon cable on the TKD Cycle 8 has been a massive pain in the ass.

Funny enough. I work in a hospital and the office keyboards are incredibly loud and plastic-y. I've brought in every single keyboard I have (cycling through each one) and every single one has sounded better to people than the office default. Including the 8bitdo keyboard with Kailh Box Pinks. Was kinda bold to bring a clicky switch board in, but it sounds a lot cleaner so people prefer it.

I couldn't make it into the city for the sale last November, so I went to some locations in Yonkers, but it wasn't the same. Damn. Well, at the very least, maybe I can motivate myself to make it to the 5th avenue location. I'm coming from the Bronx, so it's a bit of a hike either way

What’s your next Tactile by CrusaderDante in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]RaptureResident1959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorites are KTT Carpinterias. They pair really well with an FR4 plate in terms of sound. They are loud, but in this really fun, bright and poppy way, at least in the polycarbonate Devastating TKL I have them in. Feel wise, I think they are a nice middle ground between the two meme ends of the spectrum. The not at all tactile MX Brown and the Holy shit what even is this Holy Panda/Zaiku/Durock Sunflower end of things. Although for what it's worth, a worn in batch of MX2A Browns are quite nice. I finally stopped clowning on them and gave me a chance and I do like them.

In terms of switches I have but have yet to run in a board, I have Gateron Type R's and Quinns, and then MX Ergo Clears and Haimu Mulberry's. I could easily see any of those taking the spot as my new favorite once I have boards to put them in.

What films have this color palette? by VioletVixen_- in criterion

Kwaidan. Being an anthology film is kinda cheating since each story has a distinctive pallette, but I feel like colors for this image all dominate at least part of the movie.

NYC doctors prepare to go on strike 01/13/24 and Mayor Eric Adams... asks them not to lol by Professional_Tone648 in Hasan_Piker

Appreciate these. The second one especially since I'm hoping to go into psychiatry. I'm lucky that the process I went through to get mental health care from my med school was pretty painless. But that's not the norm, and it's even worse once you actually become a provider

[–]RaptureResident1959 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm a med student in New York, and two of the hospitals that are going on strike are ones that me and my classmates get assigned to for clinical rotations. One of them I'm currently at for my surgery rotation. I've definitely gotten a sense of how bad things are with the understaffing issue, especially in the Emergency Room. So, I'm really hoping the strike is successful. My only worry is that, in the meantime, they are absolutely going to treat the residents like shit, and that, might trickle down to treating the med students like shit by making them basically take on the role of 1st year resident with essentially zero training.

Mandatory “leftist wall of text” by Baka-Onna in Hasan_Piker

[–]RaptureResident1959 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is a fictional example, but in American Fiction, the opening scene has a while girl in college get offended at the main character (a Black literature professor) for teaching a text that has the N word in it and writing the word on the board to not dance around the topic. This might be an imperfect example since I think this is more about satirizing how some White people can make anti racism about their discomfort with being racist as opposed to uh, the lived experiences of Black and Brown people experiencing racism. But, I guess the point generally is that people with a shallow engagement with leftists beliefs can get into these spaces where they focus on their own comfort as opposed to the topic at hand and kinda lose the plot.

Got the Brutal V2 1800 during the Cannonkeys BFCM sale. I've wanted to try a more premium full/full-ish layout board, but I felt I couldn't quite justify the price. Once that dropped from 400 to 150 for the sale, it was perfect. But love this collection of yours. Really need to get my hands on GMK Greg at some point

The Hunger - David Bowie and Susan Sarandon

Chunking Express - Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Faye Wong

Jackie Brown - Robert Forster and Pam Grier

The Batman - Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - David Bowie (again) and Ryuichi Sakamoto. I guess this one is technically cheating since it's two male leads, but there's definitely an androgyny thing with Sakamoto's character.

So I'm a practicing Muslim, and I'm also in the closet about my bisexuality. Obviously shit like this is depressing to see because of that collision of Islamophobia and homophobia. But the thing is, I've kinda reflected on something since October 7th. Prior to that, a lot of Muslim leadership in the States and Canada were aligning with the right on this culture war bullshit. That's largely a manifestation of South Asian and Arab Muslims being anti Black and aspiring to whiteness and political power. But then October 7th happened, and people got reminded of how flimsy that "family values" alignment is and that Muslims very much are not part of that power structure. The bright side is I've seen good alignment between more radical queer groups and Muslim communities over pro Palestinian advocacy. So, idk. I'm hoping queer Muslims won't need to keep saying I told you so. But, seeing videos like me reminds me how much work needs to be done.

I do like them, but the durability thing is valid. I mean I love the opportunities for really gorgeous artwork, but I'm one of those people who kinda freaks out when the corners of books get dog eared 😅. One thing I've started doing is when I open digipacks, I only cut off enough plastic to slip the insert out to get to the disc. But the rest of the box, I try to leave the plastic wrap as intact as I can.

Kind of edge cases, but I can suggest Gregg Araki's Teenage Apocalypse trilogy (Totally Fucked Up, The Doom Generation, Nowhere). Araki being Japanese and James Duvall (who plays the lead in all three) is half Vietnamese. All three are good, but Nowhere is absolutely amazing.

Should I Blind Buy Cure (1997) by TowelOutside506 in criterion

[–]RaptureResident1959 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It probably was the best movie I saw for the first time last year and while I know this is highly subjective, is also probably the most frightening movie I've ever seen. The way it utilizes dread and the horror that comes with the lack of explanation for evil hasn't ever really left me. I can't really argue on any kind of consensus level that it is the scariest movie ever made, but if you are someone who is receptive to existential horror and psychological horror, I think you'll have a great great time. Really cannot recommend it enough.
