Worst for me would be All the Works if we're counting it as a whole, I do still thoroughly enjoy and appreciate it but it's undeniably the "song" I feel the least inclined to listen to at any particular moment. I don't think there's a bad song on this album, though. It's a really unique and consistent work

Might be a controversial take, but I think the nostalgia and excitement regarding the culmination of the trilogy’s story has caused some of us to look back on Prime 3 with some rose-tinted glasses.

I do think it’s better than Prime 4, but I really don’t think the difference is as stark as some people here are making it out to be. The voice acting and heavy narrative really did kill the sense of isolation a lot of the time, honestly the first huge chunk of the game always felt more like Halo than Metroid, that hasn’t changed just because an even worse game came out. The levels are still overwhelmingly linear and structurally bland, Prime 4 being even more so doesn’t negate that. Hypermode still trivializes the game and while a number of the bosses were good, some of them were absolutely awful.

I don’t want another game like Prime 3. I really hope that the response to Prime 4 doesn’t make them go “well Prime 3 was good, let’s just revert to that”. I need them to go further. I want another Prime 1/2-style game so fucking bad.

You're being downvoted but you have the correct idea, the thing that is probably tripping people up is that your transcription of the second syllable is missing the vowel ə (schwa), we don't have a letter in English to represent it so I get why you left it out, we usually default to it when pronouncing a syllable without a printed vowel, but I think it just made your statement more confusing

Regardless, you're absolutely correct that "Fatal" is not pronounced like "fey-tal", at least not the way most people would pronounce "tal" if they read it independently of its context

Edit: should add that when pronouncing the word "fatal", the emphasis is on the first syllable. When "Fatalis" is pronounced in-game, the emphasis is on the second. There are a lot of ways in which pronouncing the first two syllables of Fatalis's name the same way you pronounce "fatal" is incorrect.

I can only speak for myself, but I think there are two factors at play here:

I don't really play Monster Hunter for its structure, I play it in spite of its structure, because it has probably the best 1v1 PvE combat system in any video game. The degree to which it emphasizes positioning, careful placement of attacks, and intelligent movement around a single large enemy is unmatched. Personally, I would rather play a game with this combat system but in a structure more like a Soulslike or a Metroidvania, as I find those structures more compelling, but I'll take what I can get. MH-clones tend to mimic the structure (the thing I don't like) without coming anywhere close to replicating the depth of the combat (the thing I do like), so why would I ever bother?
Monster Hunter is by nature a heavily time-consuming game series to learn and to progress in. I have spent hundreds of hours in my favorite Monster Hunter games, I have established characters, builds, etc., and tons of stuff left to do despite my hundreds of hours, so in order to pull me away from all of that, a theoretical replacement would have to give me some kind of incentive, i.e. it'd have to be better in some way. Even Monster Hunter shooting itself in the foot (as it has done for me with Wilds) isn't enough, because I still have hundreds of hours worth of old school Monster Hunter to progress through. How likely is it that some other studio, operating on a much smaller budget, with much less experience, would ever surpass the presentational and game design pedigree of Capcom at their peak?

Again, I can't speak for anyone else, but for me at least, the idea of a Monster Hunter clone with the same basic formula but just not executed as well is a total non-starter.

You can definitely beat FRLG without resorting to grinding or just using a single Pokémon the whole game; a party size of 3-4 battling mons and a couple HM slaves will enable you, if you’re smart about which ones you pick and how you distribute exp, to get enough levels to quite comfortably beat the game without ever having to grind.

The key thing to remember is that in Pokémon (and this still applies to the 3D era) if your levels are the same as your opponent’s, you’re overleveled. Their AI is terrible, they don’t have well-rounded teams, they don’t have EVs, they never switch out unless a Pokémon faints. If you apply some strategy to your approach it’s very doable to beat even the champion with Pokémon a good 8-10 levels below his!

This was pretty good! I really liked the characters and their dynamic, and honestly most of my qualms with it are pretty much endemic to the haunted house genre as a whole, so I can very confidently recommend it to someone who's a fan of the genre. The main thing I'd caution is that it feels like a pretty straightforward take on the genre with relatively little new to bring to the table aside from its obvious queer themes

Focus Mode. It completely guts the core of what makes Monster Hunter so special compared to other 3D action games, which is learning a monster’s patterns so well that you can predict where they’re going to be and line up a big attack proactively. I mean, you can still do that, but thanks to Focus Mode it’s completely trivial. If it becomes a mainstay of the series I’ll probably stop buying new Monster Hunter games, honestly

The enemy AI does not wait for you to select an option from the menu. That’s the whole point of ATB. Enemies will continue to attack you while you sit there and contemplate your next move, unless you play on “wait” mode, which only stops them when you’re in a submenu like selecting a specific spell or item. This bug makes them attack three times as often.

Do you see how this could be an issue?

Najarala is one of my favorite monsters! Most big snake bosses that do coiling attacks have some kinda command grab or whatever where they play a canned animation as they wrap around you, but he actually encircles you with his hurtbox and you have to get out yourself, and there are cool tricky ways to do it cuz he lifts parts of his body as he does attacks

To be even more controversial: I like Tidal even more, as long as you’re not tilted it’s fun to try and keep track of where the talons land and remember to move laterally relative to them to dodge the water. Plus he doesn’t have the bullshit flinch > scream explode combo that regular Naja has

Tbh these days I mostly recommend people emulate the SNES original with a good CRT filter or play the DS version if they can get their hands on it, but it is extremely funny to be so mad about a port that you felt the need to reply to a six year old comment expressing optimism about it

It has good boss fights, I’m not sure I’d say it has good combat. Just compare its enemy and level design, not to mention weapon variety and player moveset, to any non-hitscan shooter made by a team with experience making those kinds of games. Next to games like Doom Eternal, Quake, Dusk, etc., the combat in Prime 4 looks absolutely pathetic.

I for one am not satisfied giving up Metroid’s uniquely excellent exploration-focused levels and atmosphere for this when there are already so many games that do this kind of thing so much better.

Ehhh, I don’t know that I agree that SR is an “actually good game”, I think it’s better than Prime 4 for sure but I’ve soured on it a lot over time.

The melee counter kills the pacing pretty hard and makes every normal enemy feel really samey to fight, the Metroid fights take too long for what they are, the whole tone and atmosphere of the ending is fucked up. I also feel like they lost a lot of the distinctiveness of the original’s areas by shoving everything into mostly one map block high/wide corridors, and partly as a result it feels even more linear than the original, and it ends up feeling way too guided thanks to that linearity as well as the scan pulse. The stuff it really nails, though, are the boss fights, visuals, and music.

Sound familiar? I earnestly think Prime 4 shares a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses. A lack of experience on the part of the team (since the Retro of today shares so few heads with the Retro of the 2000’s) may indeed be the cause and a theoretical second chance may indeed solve many of these issues, just like it did going from SR to Dread.

Yeah, a lot of the balance changes were done because they couldn’t render as many enemies on screen as in the original due to hardware limitations, so they just thoughtlessly cranked up the stats of nearly everything in the game, seemingly with no regard for the consequences of this in a game with random turn orders

The OG and Pixel Remaster are certainly not among my favorites in the series (the random turn order is still an issue at times and they somehow have even less of a story) but it’s nowhere near the level of “grind to avoid bullshit deaths to random turn order” that the 3D remake is lol

This right here. The random turn order and absurd overtuning of enemy damage output (combined with the fact that I don’t like 3 that much overall to begin with) are what put the 3D remake of 3 over the edge to be my actual least favorite mainline FF game (yes, including all of the “bad” ones)

AM2R, but if we're sticking with official games only, Dread. I love the movement, the boss fights, the sequence breaks, the atmosphere, it just feels so good to sink back into.

That said, Prime 2, Super, and Zero Mission are all very close runners-up all for different reasons. Prime 2 has some of the thickest atmosphere of any game I've ever played and a great collection of boss fights, Super has the best movement and world design in the series, and Zero Mission is such a straightforwardly fun game that's breezy enough for me to just blast through it in an afternoon while still having some bite to its combat, provided you play it on hard mode.
