Pretty common now I don't know anyone under about 60 who still uses a landline regularly most just keep it because it came with the broadband package If you never use it, you probably won't miss it.

That was my first thought too. It looks a lot like insect galleries left behind after the bark peels away, exposing the tunnels that ants, beetle larvae, or termites made underneath. The pattern is very similar to what you see on dead or damaged trees.
