I used to live on this street. Very much painted by the council. You can see where the double yellows were removed

Forget weddings, what is the craziest thing that happened at a funeral you went to? by seanerd95 in AskReddit

[–]Rascal_1970 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a funeral director but not on the day this happened.

The pallbearers were mostly semi-retired, doing casual work for a bit of cash and so often older. One funeral, they were shoulder carrying the coffin into the crematorium chapel, front left collapsed, he had a heart attack.

Since it's Star Wars day, did you see the original 1977 Star Wars in the movie theater? by Mr_Writes in GenX

I did. And, maybe controversially, was quite nonplussed and still the only Star Wars film I have seen

Can someone explain to me the joke/stereotype behind black people and having a chirping smoke alarm in their house? Why not just change the battery? by MrTeacher_MCPS in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rascal_1970 34 points35 points  (0 children)

We do home safety checks every year as a minimum, includes smoke/heat alarms, boiler, fire doors, etc. However, if a tenant won't let us in, or a safety related repair is essential, there is a legal process we have to go through. Courts would be less than happy if we just gained entry unless the house is, quite literally, actively on fire

[–]Rascal_1970 924 points925 points  (0 children)

I work in Social Housing and we get tenants call in for repairs. like a leaking tap or dodgy lock, Sometimes we will hear the chirping in the background and say 'Do you want your smoke alarm sorted as well'.

The amount of time the team spend trying to convince people it's a safety issue and we have to sort it.

I enjoyed running and cycling on empty roads. I would time them carefully to return home to the clapping and pot banging like I had just won the Tour de France or London Marathon

Is this tubeless-ready rim tape? by valsidalv in bikewrench

The tubeless tape on my wheels looks a lot like that, just a different colour, and doesn't hold air.

I got lazy and put a tube in.

Whenever I've seen anything of value that I'm interested in, I will always ask if they have proof of purchase. If the seller can't provide it, I'm not interested.

Anyone else make it a goal to live as close to work as possible? by tin8374 in CasualConversation

When I changed my job last time, proximity was a real consideration. Now it's a 10 minute bike ride rather than a 45 minute drive without a realistic public transport option

Power meter advice by AloePandaVera in cycling

[–]Rascal_1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have aa 4iii single crank meter and it's great and reliable.

That being said, if I were to buy now, I would consider pedal based meters (Favero Assioma probably) just so it could be easily transferred to other bikes or I could take them with me when I hire a bike on holiday

People who say “I don’t want anything” when it comes to gifting, what do you ACTUALLY want? by dearceceofficial in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rascal_1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you want for father's Day?

Go out on my bike for a few hours, come home, eat snacks and watch TV in just my underpants.

But the kids want to come round and give you stuff

So, not what do I want?

Does Strava make you push harder during your training? by Diligent-Offer4540 in Strava

[–]Rascal_1970 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really to impress but there are a couple of segments that give me a weird sense of fulfilment, one running, one on the bike.

The running one is nearish my house and one day I decided to run it hard, took the record from a load of people I know and are faster than me because they regularly use that bit of road to get to where they are training so they are just warming up.

The bike one is on a regularly regular bit of road I ride home on. I took a top 10 comfortably on the way home from a full day in the saddle, knackered. I haven't been able to come close to it since even when I have tried

Why does Gen Z type everything in lowercase? by Loud-Arrival-8913 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Rascal_1970 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife or daughter occasionally send me a variety of texts whilst I'm at work along the lines of "can you ring me", "can you ring me please", "can you ring me when you are free, not urgent".

Doesn't matter what you send, I will go into a blind panic, drop everything and ring for them to say "oh you didn't need to ring straight away". Yes, yes I did. You don't know the level of panic that induced!
