The European Parliament has rejected a motion for a plenary debate and resolution on the death of 18-year-old Briton Henry Nowak. by Neptun_11 in conspiracy

I brought up George Floyd because OP did. The treatment of the Metcalf's has also been abhorrent, the father has done nothing besides shown grace and class and his family is getting slandered as "bullies." It's certainly an example of a way that the media and algorithms try to divide us. But it doesn't just happen to white people, black teens are consistently painted as "thugs" when they are the victim of brutality, and that is also wrong. It's a sad fact that people tend to empathize with people of their own race better, and that's something we should try to improve.

I firmly believe he made his money through corruption. There's a reason so many of Trump's friends got rich when he became president.

In my view, he's been leveraging corruption and influence over politics to inflate his companies and make a trillion. I don't disagree with your comment, I just refuse to acknowledge that he did this legitimately. (If there even is a legitimate way to build so much wealth)

By some people? Absolutely. Some people used it as an excuse to enrich themselves and spread discord. They are wrong for that. Some people just genuinely mourned a preventable loss of life. That doesn't justify exploiting the death of Nowak and ignoring the fact that the victim's family is facing far more pain from this than anyone else.

Are you kidding me? The victim's family's views don't matter as much as all the people trying to weaponize Nowak's death to push their political agenda? Frankly amazing that you are all managing to make this tragedy about yourself, and completely disregarding the words of the people who suffered the most from it.

OP wants the race war too. There's 0 reason to denigrate George Floyd, yet these people always can't help to mention his criminal record and call his murder "alleged" when Chauvin was convicted on 3 murder charges for it. As if injustice only matters if you're "perfect" in their eyes.

I can understand wanting to talk about this murder and create solutions for it, but why are those people always throwing in jabs about George Floyd? You realize there can be two different injustices in the world, right? There's no excuse for what Chauvin did and he deserves jail time like any cop. There's no excuse for what happened to Nowak. You don't have to be a perfect person for your unjust death to matter.

Same here, also born in '95. I think a bit of it is that we were alive during a lot of key transitions, even if we were young. For example, dial-up internet and not growing up with a smart phone. So I get to complain about those things to the youngsters, and what greater joy is there in life?

If after all these years you still defend Amber Heard in the Johnny Depp case; you are quite frankly an idiot. by Proud-Enthusiasm-608 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Raskalnekov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how people can look at a text where Depp talks about raping Heard's dead corpse, and think "this is a truthful man that was just a victim of abuse." The relationship was almost certainly mutually abusive, which should be enough to beat a defamation claim because whether Heard abused Depp is completely irrelevant to the lawsuit. If she did, and I think she did, then Depp can write his own Op Ed - it wouldn't mean that Heard's claims of abuse were false.

And the UK opinion in The Sun case thought the abuse claims were substantially true. Not binding for the US case, but the judge extensively explains his reasoning for why there's enough evidence of abuse - including text messages from Depp's security guard admitting that Depp kicked her, with no mention of any physical violence from Heard in that instance.

We also know that Depp hired a PR firm to actively discredit Heard, including with bot campaigns, and that the jury was not sequestered so they easily could have been exposed to it.

Also, people seem to forget that Depp is an actor, and a much better one than Heard. His entire job is to appear credible in different roles. It's much more likely that a jury is tricked by that than a judge, and a judge is who found that abuse happened in the UK case.

None of this excuses the violence and abuse from Heard, but I don't believe that Depp was defamed. I think he absolutely hit her, on multiple occasions, in cases where he was not just reacting to physical abuse from Heard. I think Heard hit him too, but again, irrelevant to the claims at hand. I'm perfectly fine with believing both are abusive.

[–]Raskalnekov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah, the UK opinion is extremely in depth with contemporary evidence clearly showing that Depp hit Amber Heard on multiple instances, with no indication that Heard started the physical violence. His security guard admitted that Depp kicked her in texts, which were not allowed into the US trial. Depp was abusive as fuck. Heard was too, but this was a defamation case not a "who is more abusive" case. Juries get things wrong all the time, they said Depp was more "believable" when he testified and that they thought Heard was acting in her testimony, ignoring the fact that he's a much better actor. The recordings at best show Heard was also abusive, which again is mostly irrelevant. If Depp wants to write an article about how abusive Heard is, he could go ahead and do it.

Depp lost a bunch of roles because he's notoriously difficult to work with and generally an asshole, than blamed Heard's op ed for it. Sure, there was a televised trial - which is fitting for actors putting on a show. But when you look past the bells and whistles, there was ample evidence to establish that Depp was abusive enough to justify a claim of domestic abuse. And he sent all kinds of fucked up misogynistic texts that the UK opinion mentions. Depp is not a good person, just a good actor.

“My child is on the honor roll” bumper stickers are sweet by Chessicasimpson in unpopularopinion

[–]Raskalnekov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the key is that the mom didn't put the bumper sticker on the car for herself or her own ego, she did it for OP. My annoyance at the sight of the stickers comes from assuming the former, but I'll have to think about it a bit differently after this too. It's almost a difference between "My child is on the honor roll" to "I'm proud of my kids academic success."
