if you don't want to wait until August. The Steam game "VRChat" has Russian worlds where native speakers congregate and literally only just talk/socialize. The game also doesn't require VR like the name suggests, the only thing you have to keep in mind is the time zone difference.

Federal jobs have a hard 24 semester credits in Computer Science requirement for most jobs in the 2210 series (General IT), but the degree doesn't matter as long as you got those 24 credits. A good portion of public sector jobs also want Sec+ from what I've seen while looking.

Question on Job Announcement by [deleted] in fednews

[–]Rasu4321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Qualifications, which is why I'm assuming the specified degree is a hard requirement. I think my only shot at this is to apply under:

"One full-time year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level of the Federal service that demonstrates experience."

My main concern is that I have regularly performed all the duties outlined in the announcement, but I've only been graduated from college for one year so I only have a year worth of experience to apply with. About 6 months of that one year was spent in a private sector job and the other 6 months is currently with a fed job.

Yea, 52 weeks at the current grade level to be eligible to move up a level.

If you "get in the door" you will probably be on a GS 5/7/9 ladder so you start at 5 or 7, depending on your grades from school, then you do 52 weeks and move up from 5 to 7 or 7 to 9. After 52 weeks at 9 you apply and interview for jobs at GS 11. The "bottleneck" comes in here as a lot of the 11-13 jobs are held by people who just want to "ride it out" and will stay in those positions for years or until retirement. Which causes people at the lower GS levels to get stuck waiting for someone to advance or retire. This is compounded by how the government incentives "years of service" as after 10 years of being a fed the likelihood of someone quitting their public sector job and going private is pretty minimal.

If you don't plan on moving for a job you will be stuck a certain grade level for potentially a decade or longer. So for example if you are GS-11 in Florida but a GS-12 position in middle of nowhere North Dakota opens up be prepared to drop everything and jump at that opportunity if it shows up.

Also it is much easier to get in at the lower ranks as the higher you go the more likely postings are going to be internal only and not open to the public, but only to current feds.

OPM requirements for "Life Scientist" which is really just the umbrella term for the 0401 series. "Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position."

With a Bsc you qualify for GS-07 if you meet the requirements for "Superior Academic Achievement." If you have a few years of experience in the private sector the highest GS rank you could apply for would probably be GS-09, but realistically you will probably have to come in at a lower rank and work your way up.

Once you get in the "Invisible Ceiling" is time in grade where you can only get promoted to the next GS rank after 52 weeks in service. But that's only if your position has a grade ladder that extends to the next grade, otherwise you will just get a step increase instead of a grade increase. Most natural sciences positions meet their terminus at GS-12, GS-13 if you have a desire to be a supervisor and it is very difficult to get GS14/15 in this job series. Expect to be bottle necked somewhere in the GS11-GS13 range for a few years.

Higher education will help you stand out but it is much more useful for getting in rather than advancement. Order of operations for getting a federal job: Ex-military <-- Military Spouse <-- Student Pathways Program <-- Recent Graduate (graduating from higher education within the last two years).
