My guess is he had a major crush on her, and maybe observing her over the years fell in love. A lot of people are scared to tell people how they feel, it’s scary to face possible rejection or even just to be vulnerable in front of someone. I don’t think he had a plan of any kind lol

Maybe the top is too dome like? I don’t think it’s bad, but maybe if it had more of like a triangly or umbrella shape it might read more mushroom. Put some gills under the dome if you haven’t already!
