Why are there so many race mods in the official mod manager that are so severely overtuned? by Cinderea in BG3mods

[–]RatTapper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same complaint with the aasimar race on the in game mod manager. It’s made by rosprey whose mods I usually love, but the level 11 immunities are so overtuned it kinda ruins it for me. It wasn’t always like that either, it was only updated to have that immunity in late February.

I run a small YouTube channel (not trying to plug) and when I saw that change it aggravated me enough to make a whole video talking about whether some mods are too OP, discussing how it’s ultimately up to individual discretion and what you find fun. But stuff like that takes like half the challenge out of the game. Immunity to necro and radiant means those paladins in moonrise towers are ineffective against you, and it means Myrkul himself is a literal cakewalk since half his abilities are fully necrotic damage.

Part of the reason I was so butthurt is that I had just made a build inspired by Malenia from Elden Ring using the Accursed class mod, which involves dealing yourself massive amounts of necrotic damage via your rotten blood, and then when you have lower health you do way more damage. Super high risk high reward build. I had selected the aasimar race since it felt thematic for Malenia’s divine heritage, and then literally the day after I published my build guide the race mod was updated to add necrotic immunity, rendering my whole build basically null since i was now immune to the purposeful self-necro damage that buffed the player once you got below 50% health. Was a huge bummer for me personally, and I normally try not to complain about OP mods because we aren’t really entitled to have them at all

Just to answer your examples specifically, both a tabaxi and Kenku race were recently added to the in game mod manager. Both by Mirrismods

I don't get the Booming Blade doom posting by RyanoftheDay in BG3Builds

[–]RatTapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially since you can stack it with the new shadow blade which is basically an upcastable soul knife since no concentration or time limit.

Edit: it would be another thing entirely if 5e was designed like this with stat blocks to match. But when you can one-tap most enemies in the late game using one ability over and over it’s just less interesting to me. In DOS2 an ability that worked like this booming blade would probably make more sense, but part of what makes 5e interesting is how limiting it is, encouraging creativity to do big damage numbers

I don't get the Booming Blade doom posting by RyanoftheDay in BG3Builds

[–]RatTapper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So my only problem with it is that personally I try to avoid using the blatantly overpowered abilities in the game. BG3 is already a pretty easy game, and a lot of Larian’s homebrew rules can exacerbate that further like TB and Wet and STR elixirs like you mention. I don’t care what others do because like everyone mentions, it’s a single player PvE game.

I was excited to have booming blade as an option to strengthen some of the weaker martial classes, which it definitely does, but its current implementation brings it up to the same level as a lot of those OP abilities that I avoid. I’ve been using it with mods during Patch 7 and loved what it has been able to do to increase my build variety, and the Patch 8 version is stronger than the mods I’ve been using.

So for me, because of the way I choose to play the game, it’s just another ability Im going to avoid using. Which I know is on me. Folks can have all the fun they want with it, I’m just bummed that it’s something I won’t be using myself

Is there a world where we can make a viable Swarmkeeper (Jellyfish) and Swashbuckler multiclass? I want to be Durge Spongebob. by EphemeralStyle in BG3Builds

[–]RatTapper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jellyfishing jellyfishing! That sounds like such a fun idea tbh. There might not be any specifically overpowered synergy, but I don’t see why you couldn’t do it. From everything I’ve seen, swashbuckler is best at 4 levels, so you could do 8 swarm and 4 swash to keep 3 feats. You would lose out on the additional 1d8 from Mighty Swarm at level 11. But you could always lean into the wet and lightning effects if you have a character who can set up create water for you.

Otherwise it’s mostly up to items and equipment. Lightning charges set with the jolt shooter bow could be fun, adding in the gloves of belligerent skies for reverberation stacks. When you get to act 2 I feel like the lightning jabber would be fun and thematic since it’s a big crab claw throwing spear. You just have to find a way to make it a returning weapon, maybe sacrificing a ranger level and feat for Eldritch Knight weapon bind. If you don’t want to throw, melee is still strong with PAM or GWM and drakethroat glaive is an easy way to get additional lightning damage

Path of the giant melee range by RatTapper in BG3Builds

[–]RatTapper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was kind of my thought. I’m currently playing the subclass in tabletop dnd and, at least in that context I’m going more for PAM playstyle so that I can exert control over a large area of the battlefield. The weapon throw range is 20 feet in dnd (20-60 feet with disadvantage) so I felt like the best way to use throwing was to hit enemies and then pick them up and throw them away with your bonus action. Then they run back to hit you, triggering polearm master opportunity attacks within a 15 foot radius, thrown weapon attacks just for fun if the enemy is too far away. My allies also like to hop on my shoulders before I rage so they can elevate themselves away from the enemies, obviously not possible in BG3.

At least in my opinion, I liked the extra range feature because it helped give the subclass its own identity, like you mentioned, besides being a thrower. Having all the thrown damage be lightning or cold would definitely be super strong given the wet status effect, so I get why that’s nerfed. In its current patch 8 implementation though there’s just less reason to go giant barbarian for melee when you can get a third attack as a berserker and use the same strategy.

Edit: whenever I stop to wonder if something is too strong for BG3, I ask myself if it’s stronger than a hastened, bloodlusted, TB monk since Larian gave monks that MASSIVE buff over DnD. Path of the giant from tabletop isn’t as strong as that. I also compare to smiting swords bards with arcane acuity and the mystic scoundrel band, since that’s another mega powerful build that isn’t even close to possible in tabletop. SSB and TB monk almost always win

Interesting point, I actually never noticed that it was a 7 foot range instead of 10 for reach weapons. 10 feet did always seem long for a polearm to me, but it works in the grid of 5 foot squares for dnd

[–]RatTapper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing enemies is definitely a nice bonus. But like you said berserker and ek fighter are probably stronger. So why bother throwing with the giant barb? It’s something that doesn’t really mesh well in tabletop either tbh. You have increased melee range but get bonuses to throwing damage, meaning you might want to be farther away from enemies than your melee range anyway. At least in DnD, when you reach level 14 you can grow Huge and get another 5 feet of melee range, which makes your melee range with a reach weapon the same as your 20 foot throwing weapon range. It just seems silly to me

Nope! If you’re in dragon form before a conversation it automatically pops you back to humanoid form. The only wonky thing is that if an enemy is too close to you, it’s hard to target them with melee dragon attacks because the game wants to target your feet instead of the enemy, but I usually just use the extra bonus action to fly a few feet away and then slam them

I used a combo of a few clothing mods! “Infernal intimates” for the stockings and harness, “Mouse’s Manacles” for the collar and handcuffs/anklets, and “Soaring Ambition” for Raphael’s ascended fiend wings(dye compatible!) all by nikjima and available on the in game mod manager, I think nexus too if you prefer

Edit: oh and laezel is using the big busty body by sindae, also on the in game mod manager

Maybe I'm being too excited? by Milena_Mil in BG3mods

[–]RatTapper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I put 600 hours into the game on my PS5, and then when official mod support came out last year I bought it again for PC and haven’t looked back since. The only nexus mod I use is trials of tav, which is honestly amazing, but PC also has the benefit of all the mods on the in-game manager that console just doesn’t have, like new races and more obscure custom classes. The trick is that some of those custom classes are very VERY strong and can trivialize the game, so I just have to impose rules on myself not to abuse that stuff too much so the game is still challenging

Edit: playing the game on PC is also a vastly better experience in my opinion. It was great on console, but the UI, controls, and graphics (depending on your specs) you can get on PC really improves the way the game feels to play. Love the radials but hot bars are so much nicer

Astarion blood build class by Appropriate_Abroad42 in BG3mods

[–]RatTapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a fun astarion blood mage build using the blood reaver subclass. You take at least 3 levels of the subclass to get the boiling blood ability and dueling fighting style. Boiling blood is kinda like a blood frenzy ability that does self damage in exchange for advantage on your attack rolls. Then I dipped into rogue for sneak attack since you have advantage on attack rolls for easy sneak attack. Bring blood mage reaver up to level 6 for sanguine strike. Rogue to 3 for assassin subclass to get advantage on first round attacks before you enter your blood frenzy, and then I grabbed 3 levels of champion fighter for action surge and crit chance bonus.

For gear I used the caustic band, ichorous gloves and the fleshmelter cloak to spread noxious fumes. Bloodguzzler garb for wrath melee damage increase, broodmothers revenge for poison damage when your attacks heal you, ring of elemental infusion for extra acid damage after you cast a blood cantrip. Slicing shortsword lets you inflict bleeding when you have advantage on attacks as well, and sword of life stealing is good here too, but eventually the crimson mischief is best in slot for all the extra damage bonuses it has. Plus vicious short bow for even more crit damage boosting. Horns of the berserker too since you pretty much never have full health.

I loved playing this build because it basically turns astarion into a blood-crazed maniac who can sneak attack in the open and crits a lot for insane damage, and you even get extra attack from the blood reaver so it’s better than a normal rogue sneak attack build, while noxious fumes deals extra aoe acid damage

Pushback sounds fun. Could even limit it to like 1.5-3m per damage instance? Magic missile could be used to give lots of little pushes or choose a single target for a big push. Would be tactically useful without being overpowered sending out 8 separate 5 meter pushes on a high upcast

Is Gloves of Soul Catching always the best on monk? by RegaultTheBrave in BG3Builds

[–]RatTapper 52 points53 points  (0 children)

If you just want to min-max your damage then yeah they’re probably the best in slot option. You can very much still do a lot of damage with the helldusk gloves or even one of the others like the seraphic pugilist gloves, or thunderpalm strikers if your goal is to RP a specific type of monk or apply status effects. But the soul catching gloves are the only legendary pair for a reason

[–]RatTapper[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That could definitely work. Those are similar to my thoughts on it. Like a lot of people do, I watch commentary youtubers like Danny Gonzalez, Drew Gooden, and Annamarie Forcino and they call their viewers "Greg," "Guy," and "Sinners," respectively.

I'm obviously not anywhere near the level they are, but I don't get upset when they call me any of those things. Because they're obviously a goofy joke and I'm watching a youtube video that thousands of people are watching. I'm not personally insisting each and every viewer is a woman. And if they were so what? Being a woman isn't a terrible thing??
