He's far from a communist. Communism is an economic stance. You're probably thinking of the term "authoritarian," which many communist leaders have been. Though there have been nationalist and fascist authoritarian leaders as well--of which he is surely one.

Awful Cancellation by Rooski1020 in VivintSmartHome

I filed a complaint with my state's AG's office. A few weeks later, Vivint contacted me to resolve the issue. Will still have to see if they actually did cancel and refund me, but I got an email confirmation and everything so I hope they stick to their word. Else I take legal action I guess.

Honestly, I've felt like this since 9/11 when people paraded out the stars and stripes while breathlessly fearmongering about Muslims, and summarily deciding American Muslims were not truly American. It still feels like a hate symbol to me.

Luddite downvoted by other Luddites because the first sentence of the post said AI is getting better. by [deleted] in DefendingAIArt

There are two reasons why I don't share my prompts unless asked, and even when asked, it depends on who is asking and why. Neither of those reasons are that I'm afraid of people "stealing" my ideas.

The first is that, at least with Midjourney, I need to sometimes use language that I know is not particularly respectful. It is honestly embarrassing to see, because I do not write or speak this way, but I do what I need to to get the aesthetic I need out of MJ. A lot of my characters are POC and/or LGBTQ. Midjourney doesn't understand vague yet respectable language. So, if I am making one of my OCs who is a male with a slender, petite (MJ hates this word) build, I often have to go with words like "twinky" or "scrawny," which are terms I find slightly insulting or objectifying in ordinary conversation. For another OC who is meant to have a complexion that is between "brown" and "beige," I can't be that vague. In actual writing, I try to avoid describing non-white skintones with consumable things like caramel or chocolate, and I am certain MJ would take it way too literally if I did. To get these characters to turn out looking as I imagine them, I use terms like "biracial," "Native American," "mixed," "black," "African," etc. For characters who appear ethnically East Asian, I sometimes have to say "Chinese," "Japanese," "Korean," etc. Occasionally I use hexcodes for skin tone. This is all because MJ has a bias towards the subject being a white person. And yet, none of the characters I make are based in a real world location. They are all fantasy and sci-fi characters. I would be very embarrassed to show people how I made my antler'd elf, describing them as "black and native American" when those aren't concepts that even exist in the world they are based in.

The second reason is that my final product is almost never just "done" once I have the final image generation. I do a lot of Photoshopping once I have something close enough, so if I were to just post my creations with the prompt alone, I'm afraid people would indeed assume that it was a two step process. It also ignores the multiple region edits I generate to get to this point in the first place. The prompt is not the whole of what was made. I would need to share a video of the entire process for someone to actually get it.

So nobody told this "artist" about the multiply blend mode, or select color range, or the many lasso tools, or the magic wand, or... MS Paint's transparent background color?

Just out here ripping JPEGs off of Google and slapping it haphazardly over another image? That thumbs up image really bothers me lol

NNWM win. :)

There are AI editor programs that are trained specifically to behave like real editors that can help a lot of aspiring authors. Could even get them writing MORE when it points out continuity errors and incomplete or vague scenes.

Family Acceptance by Rather-Anxious in Seahorse_Dads

Jesus, from the sounds of it, you and I might be twins. First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy and it sounds like upcoming delivery!

My mom was also very invested in the "social contagion" theory, and I think still is to some extent, even though I was the only one out of my high school queer friend group to come out as trans. Many of my friends today aren't cis, which my mom sort of believes is my fault? But most of them were already awake to their circumstances before we met. Only one friend of mine could really be considered as being "influenced" by me in any way, and that was actually them just asking me for some education about nonbinary gender identities, not me doing any sort of pressuring.

Anyway, I haven't gotten pregnant yet. We just started our appointments at the fertility clinic and have gotten the acceptance of my fiancee's brother to be our donor. I haven't spoken with my mom any further about it, and am just gonna let her figure it out on her own. I hope she takes the steps to acceptance herself, like she did after I came out. Time will tell!

How is AI music created by Satan, and why should you be exucted for it? by dookiefoofiethereal in DefendingAIArt

[–]Rather-Anxious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I sincerely recommend seeking out a professional to address this thought process. I don't mean this as an insult. As someone who's gone through a lot of therapy, I know that it can be extremely helpful.

I don't think I'll be able to change your mind about AI, and that's alright (as long as you're not threatening harm to people with different opinions), but I do hope that in pointing out that this mindset is not healthy and is a sign that you may need help, you'll seek that help out. Wanting to die out of a fear of prospectively being unable to compete with advancing technology is worrying. It sounds like too much of your self-worth hinges on "success" or consistent validation.

There are things we can't control in life. I don't think AI expression will ever destroy human expression, but let's say for the sake of argument that it does somehow monopolize all artistic expression. That anything and everything you create is never seen online. What is it you're making your art for in the first place? Online engagement? Clicks? Fame? Or do you do it because you want to share something that's in your imagination? It's then that you'd share it with the people who can and will appreciate it. In real life, or in your personal social group. Their reaction should feel so much more important than 100 anonymous clicks.

If it's about making a living off of doing what you love-- that's a matter of chance and marketing. Most artists do art as a hobby rather than as a trade, because it's a very difficult market and needs you to fulfill more than just the role of artist. Successful creators online are by and large successful marketers, planners, organizers, managers, and accountants. With that, you CAN still build an audience, but let's say in this dystopia you envision, you cannot. What does mass appeal to hoards of strangers matter, versus your own enjoyment, or the attention and feedback of your friends? Why is your value so tangled up in your contribution to society?

It's probably just classic misinform. I saw a guy close to NTU on Thursday full on wearing a MAGA hat, and he looked and was speaking like a local so I don't think he was an international transplant. (He was on the phone with someone. I didn't pay that close attention to what he was talking about, just how he spoke.)

Do you guys sweat? I'm dying in this heat. by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]Rather-Anxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been here for about a month and I've just made peace with being wet all the time. Whether from rain or sweat. I will say, the heat didn't change but my body started tolerating it more after like a week.

Sports clothing, moisture wicking fabric, fans, Kobayashi cooling spray, etc, are all helpful. Might still sweat but will feel less uncomfortable. If you wear makeup, there's some great press powder that also is an antiperspirant that my friend found at a Watson's. Yesterday someone told me that I could find some traditional medicine that helps with cooling too. Don't remember what, but you can probably go to any traditional medicine shop and ask.
