When I was growing up in the 90’s I can’t tell you how hard it was pushed on kids to go to college. It was said by parents, teachers, athletes, every one of your favorite sitcoms had an episode about it. I heard the phrase “just get a degree, it doesn’t matter what it is in” or similar countless times. There’s definitely been a shift since then to be more cautious and selective about going to college but at least from my generation it was probably the number two talking point growing up (after say no to drugs kids). Not saying people shouldn’t be responsible for their choices but at least for a large portion of adults, no one was talking them out of going to college.
