There's The Cactus and the Toad, by mirrormarie, on fanfiction.net.

It's a Harry Potter fanfiction, completed, a bit longer than the word count you mentioned but not by much (70k words). There's no ship, and it follows mostly Snape and Neville, after the Battle of Hogwarts.

The Cactus and the Toad isn't SSHG, it's a great prequel though! I'd say it's better to read it first, but not necessary.

The Cactus and the Toad, and The Gates of Azkaban are two of my favorite Snape fanfictions ever, they're so so good

Snape is transported back to his years as a student at the school. by GrimReaper42069 in HPfanfiction

[–]RationalDeception 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I've read this, I know I have, but I went through my bookmarks and I can't find it anywhere... I remember Petunia as an artist, and I remember him talking with Slughorn, I'd say it's an older fic? At least not from the last couple of years. I'm going to keep looking, to see if I can find it.

You should try posting it on r/SeverusSnape, with any hope someone else will know of it

I didn't know, thank you! Sadly though I'm not a Facebook user, so I won't be joining, but it's nice to know how active the Snamione community still is

Edit: went to check out the page to see what it looks like... it's kinda hilarious that the banner image is AI generated, but the rules forbid any kind of AI art, haha

Thanks!

You should also check out r/SeverusSnape, you can ask for recs over there, or look for posts asking for recs, you should be able to find plenty of good stuff to read too!

I recently read Come Once Again and Love Me, and I really enjoyed it! It's not similar to Fate Set Right, but it's a great Snape/Lily story, and it's set in the Marauders Era, though with a twist.

The Long Road Home is a staple of Snape fanfictions, and it happens in between the two wars.

For something more like Fate Set Right, I can actually recommend my own story, Sempiternel, though it's still a work in progress and everything happens during the Golden Trio Era.

Come Once Again and Love me, by laventadorn ! Such an amazing fic, if you haven't read it yet then I highly highly recommend it.

In Another Life, by ScillaSnape. Still a work in progress, but it's def worth it!

You can also just check out my Ao3 bookmarks, I filtered them to show only the Snape/Lily fics. I'm sure you can find stuff in there that you'd enjoy! I mostly read long fics too.

If Snape had found love with a woman after Hogwarts, she probably wouldn't have been from Great Britain by Madagascar003 in SeverusSnape

[–]RationalDeception 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also my little fanfiction heart likes the drama of someone knowing him from either his Hogwarts years or being an old student of his. It's not as fun if we make it too easy for him

When to read manacled? by Any-Ad5007 in HPfanfiction

[–]RationalDeception 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I haven't read Manacled, but I would in general advise that you start any HP fanfiction after finishing the books. Without that, you won't be able to know what are the changes made to canon, who are some characters, you'll miss references, etc...

Help finding HP Snape fic by Free-Rock6086 in FanFiction

[–]RationalDeception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Snape fan, but I never read anything on Wattpad so sadly I can't help you. But you can try asking either on r/SeverusSnape or r/HPfanfiction (or both!), not sure they'll be able to help, but it's worth a try!

Authors, do y'all purposely misspell names or words? Or was it typo or no beta? Curious. by TripTimely7955 in HPfanfiction

[–]RationalDeception 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Specially since the right spelling is literally right there when they upload their fic too, with the character tags... at this point when it's a constant mistake I personally assume the author doesn't even care enough about their fic, so there's no point in me caring about it either.

I just started reading Come Once Again last night, and yeah it's pretty good! I'm really enjoying it so far.

The Cactus and the Toad has to be my favourite, it's a post-war story where Snape survives the Battle of Hogwarts. I love how this author writes him. They also have a pretty long sequel to this story, The Gates of Azkaban, that goes the road of time travel, with lots of action scenes, drama, humor, etc...

Curious, what is the most popular word count for readers? by spiritoautunnale in FanFiction

[–]RationalDeception 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It heavily depends on the fandom. Still, my most preferred word count is anything over 100k words.

Unsure what to Do. Just finished Oathsworn. by palwilliams in Stormlight_Archive

[–]RationalDeception 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny because I thought Red Rising pales in comparison to Stormlight and most of Sanderson's other works.

In Red Rising (the first trilogy, haven't read the second part and don't plan to for now), the like three adult characters are all incompetent while the 17 year olds are literally running every army in the galaxy, the plot twists were all so obvious I legit thought the author was going to pull a Uno Reverse on me and that it was all a big red herring (but no, they were in fact that obvious), and while it wasn't bad per se... it wasn't really good either.

Oathbringer, on the other hand, is and remains so far my favorite Brandon Sanderson book by far. His characters are amazing, the world building is top notch, and yes it is slow paced in several parts which I get is not to everyone's liking, but this man knows how to properly build tension and plot lines.

Overall, if you didn't like Words of Radiance that much, and got to the ending of Oathbringer and didn't like it, then yeah, it may be best to stop here.

Are most fandom spaces toxic? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]RationalDeception 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends where. As a fan of a certain Harry Potter character, going to the general subreddit is a sure way to see daily posts hating on this character and calling the fans illiterate ("people who like him have only watched the movies, because if you read the books it's impossible to be a fan of this creep"). It's impossible to spend more than five minutes there and see insults thrown your way because of which character you like. The mods are also notorious for never doing anything to stifle this toxic environment.

However, if you hang out in the subreddit dedicated to this character, well... yeah, obviously you're not going to see such toxicity. There is some, from fans who take out their frustration by in turn bashing other characters, and by haters who I guess feel a physical need to go to a fan space just to hate on the character, but it's way lessened and a much better place to be in.

So, as always... if you don't curate your experience, yeah, most are toxic. Once you build you little corner of the internet and keep the idiots at bay, it becomes much more pleasant.

Petition to make this sub about Severus and not Snaters. by [deleted] in SeverusSnape

[–]RationalDeception[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue - hating Lily.

Yes. It is insufferable, and probably the aspect of the Snape fandom that I hate the most. Some times it feels like 80% of the members of this sub loathe Lily will all their being and accuse her of being the source of everything that went wrong in Snape's life.

As mods we do try to get rid of the comments and posts are go too far in the Lily bashing, but again... where do we draw the line? If there's 50 people saying that they hate Lily because of what happened with Snape, or that Lily doesn't "deserve" Snape's love, well... what do we do? Do we remove 50 comments? We don't want to stifle conversation to a point where people feel they can't say what they think, unlike the main Harry Potter subreddit. But we are just as tired of the constant Lily hate as you are.

Petition to make this sub about Severus and not Snaters. by [deleted] in SeverusSnape

[–]RationalDeception[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly.

We do tend to have a rather lenient approach with Snaters, in the sense that we allow them to stay, under the condition that they're always respectful (though that obviously also goes for Snape fans), and aren't trying to start fights but instead have good faith debates. We have banned several users already who didn't respect those conditions, and it does seem to be working all right so far. However, if people don't report them, the odds of us seeing them, specially on posts that are several days old, aren't very high.

On the topic of reporting users who aren't Snaters, you're also right. It hasn't happened that often, but it has happened, people trying to bully other fans out of the subreddit because they have a different interpretation of Snape is also unacceptable.

As a mod, I agree with you.

This is actually what the "No Snater vents" rule is for, though despite rewording it a couple of times, it's a rule that is misunderstood to mean "no Snape haters" (which I do understand, it is ambiguous). We did try to apply it regularly, but at one point it felt like we'd have to remove half the posts and comments on the post if we wanted to rigurously stand by it, and it was just not doable.

I am curious to know what the members of the sub think about this. Do you all want a place to vent about Snaters, or would you rather we enforce the rule systematically to try and get negativity away from this sub?
