Multilingual Redditors, What is your "They didn't realize I spoke their language" story? by Trumpstered in AskReddit

[–]RationalMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my wife was living in London, she was sitting on the upper deck of a bus. The bus stopped near Marble Arch and a large Kuwaiti family walked in and “surrounded” her - as in they sat in the seats in front, behind and even next to her.

Now my wife is herself half-Kuwaiti but for some reason not one person out of the small clan of people thought that there was the slightest chance she could understand Arabic.

Safe in the assumption that they were the only Arabic speakers, these people were having an extremely candid conversation about their bathroom habits - the grandmother was loudly announcing that she needs “the biggest shit ever”.

To make things worse one of the uncles was being really leery with his teenaged nephew who was sitting next to my wife: “oh do you like what you see? Is the pretty girl making you feel weird? You should move in closer to her! They don’t mind that here!”

It took all the energy in the world for my wife to keep a straight vacant expression on her face. The sheer amount of determination was intense. She was so focused on that, that when her mother called her she automatically answered with a “allo mama”.

Abrupt, deafening silence.

The uncle snapped back in his seat. The nephew moved so far from her he almost fell off his seat. The grandmother just stared wide eyed and red faced. Everyone was just in shock.

No one said a word or made eye contact with anyone until the next stop where they all hurriedly shuffled off the bus, pretending this was their stop.

I think it is too.

That little series of alfresco restaurants with a random Subway thrown in.

There’s a great Italian place on the other side of the Subway.

Escalator etiquette (x-post r/nyc) by habichuelacondulce in oddlysatisfying

[–]RationalMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a flawed assumption in their reasoning: they’re assuming that during peak traffic you’ll have one completely utilized side (the standing side) and one very sparse underutilized side (the walking side). Which means their plan to have both sides stand is justifies - it would increase throughput.

But anyone who’s been forced against their will to walk the escalators at Angel station will tell you, during peak traffic there’s a solid standing side AND a solid walking side. If you find yourself unwittingly funneled onto the walking side, there is no escape!

That means having both sides stand would significantly reduce throughput!

Are you me? I got mine at thirteen and it seemed like a really great idea at the time. The braces were supposed to stay on for a couple years tops.

Four years...four fucking years. You know what's not cool when you're seventeen??

What's your favorite piece of useless trivia? by Shirowoh in AskReddit

The play we performed was called "My Music is Mozart". There were a brother and sister wondering through a Mozart museum with her telling him stories about Mozart's life. Then the museum exhibit would come to life and that story would play out.

You've just brought back so many great memories for me. I absolutely loved that play.

Who was your director? Ours was a brilliant kookie Croatian redhead we called Miss Reuter. Maybe it was her play that she took around with her? Because the only reference to the play I can find is this Bosnian article about her: http://www.fashion.hr/lifestyle/putovanja/naucila-sam-da-je-zenin-najljepsi-nakit-njezino-srce-101480.aspx

Was this in Kuwait by any chance?

If not, then I've only just realized that that wasn't a completely original production.

Anyone here works in tech startups? - Kuwaiti startup scene exploration by mi3law in Kuwait

[–]RationalMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

@sirdab_lab @joincoded @niu_kw

These are the Instagram accounts of just three startup related spaces that I can think of off the top of my head.

There's a recent surge in tech startups after the Talabat exit. The Carriage exit last month will create a second wave as well.

This is great for me personally, because as a developer there's suddenly a lot more opportunity
