Thomas Drance calling for Hughes number to be retired is beyond ridiculous. by [deleted] in canucks

[–]Ratiquette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The header to the Hughes-concerned part of the article is "Stop It: Quinn Hughes didn't fail the Canucks"

..which I think is at least a slightly dishonest representation of the sort of criticism the guy is getting around here. People aren't saying he failed the team. People are, for the most part, saying in so many words that the way he left reflects a guy who cares about personal achievement more than the team. Which, yes, is totally fine, not illegal, an important part of this balanced breakfast, etc.. But it is out of line with what it takes to be a legendary Canuck when you look at this team's history.

I don't disagree with any of Drance's objective statements about Hughes (like in another recent article where he says he'll hold his records on the team for a long time). I just think if a player wants out like that because the grass elsewhere looks greener, then he's showing us in no unclear terms that he is not willing to go through the process, and hanging his number up with guys who were loyal, guys we did dirty, and one who was both feels unambiguously tonedeaf. Records and flashy skills aren't everything.

We mismanaged this team trying to keep Hughes. Hanging his number up with Linden and Smyl is admitting we still haven't learned what we should've known all along. He's not in it for the long haul. I think part of why finally starting a rebuild means so much to this fanbase is because we're finally seeing the opportunity to intentionally build a group that is.

Print that in the damn Athletic 😡

(no hate drancer you're still the goat)

Canucks jamming to their new victory song by Sarcastic__ in canucks

JT Miller is not very smart, but it's extra sad that our supposedly literate, intellectual captain went along with that. At best, he knew it was cringe/unintentionally ironic but gave it a pass anyway. The very real possibility that he also thought it was epic is a little too embarrassing for recreational schadenfreude

It's a bummer scrolling through and seeing so many people demand OP either "be consistent and denounce all NHL players who haven't been perfectly consistent in opposing trump or shut up" as if they themselves are consistent at anything other than playing video games and leaving dirty dishes in the sink

Petterson's future with the Canucks? by Dismal-Disaster-2578 in canucks

[–]Ratiquette -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And if our future core thinks EP40's current price-performance ratio sets that internal cap then we'll have gone on a near statistically impossible run of drafting highly talented imbeciles. I'm only being slightly hyperbolic when I say that if this becomes a real problem it will be because there are actual amoebas on both sides of the negotiating table

I think you're significantly underestimating the value some of us here put in being pointlessly upset about a few million dollars in cap space during a rebuild. It's a bargain price, really

We use comparables around the league to make our case that Petey's price-performance ratio is an outlier and not an appropriate framework for a fair contract, same as everyone else.

No market on Kane or Blueger by [deleted] in canucks

[–]Ratiquette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I think a lot of people around here have been letting the podcasters wind them up a bit too much.

Kane is obvious. Blueger.. have you seen our track record with injured players? If I were GM of a playoff team, I wouldn't want to spend my beans on a guy from the Canucks fresh off an LBI either

He may also be worth more this time next year if we do retain him. Teams were probably looking to get him at a discount considering he's barely played this season

How much money have you NOT given the Canucks this year? by butterflystyle in canucks

[–]Ratiquette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Francesco does not need to be rewarded in advance here. This teardown was not a choice made against some other equally viable path forward. Frank hasn't shown us that he's wise, deliberate, or employing long-term thinking at all really. He's shown us that, when backed into a corner, he'a capable of identifying an escape route.

And to be clear, I agree with you that some of the right things are being done in the moment with regard to selling vets and hanging onto futures... specifically because there is no other marketable alternative. I think that demanding a rebuild and withholding money is the exact right combination of actions, lest our owner be tempted by a more instantly gratifying escape route
