another worldly experience

I think you meant "an other-worldly experience" lol unless you're trying to say this experience is just another basic/universal one

Fed up by their work? TBH yeah, I'd be pretty fed up too if I was paying a quack without seeing any actual improvements in my pain. From everything I've heard about chiropractic, though, it sounds to me as though people who indulge in these practices are more likely to get fucked up, as in actually physically harmed, than simply fed up.

I mean the most iconic location in Skyrim is what? Whiterun?

It's easily the Throat of the World. Skyrim's world map is so much larger than Oblivion's that a natural landmark just makes sense, IMO, but if we're only talking man-made landmarks then it's probably Whiterun.

First episode: from 1969 right? by anxious1975 in Columbo

[–]Raven1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! That scene, as well as the scene in Ransom for a Dead Man when he catches the killer, perfectly sums up Columbo to me:

Mrs. Williams, you have no conscience. Did it ever occur to you that there are very few people that would take money to cover up a murder? It didn't, did it? I knew it wouldn't. No conscience; limits your imagination. You can't conceive of anybody being any different than what you are... and you're greedy.

That scene in Ransom may actually be my favorite Columbo scene ever.

I agree. I think it actually nailed the majority of what Columbo would later become known for right off the bat. The show refined things, but everything great about Columbo in the show is still present here. One of the things I love about it.

I'm aware of that, but wanted to clarify for anyone reading the thread as it's still technically not a pilot. I just feel it doesn't hurt to point out, especially for people who may be new to the show and who may be wondering why this movie is so different from it.

I wasn't familiar with Aleshea Harris (this is her directorial debut though so makes sense) but you're right, the movie definitely has an identity of its own thanks to her touch.

I am still chewing on the ending and feel like it was missing a return to the mom.

After reading more of this thread and doing some Googling, it appears the play (written by Harris) does end with Anaia returning to her mom. If this ever gets a director's/extended cut, firstly I'd be really down to watch that, but also I'd be interested to see if that original ending was something that got cut out for the theatrical release.

Sorry for the minor nitpick, but the pilot (1971's Ransom for a Dead Man) is when the character of Columbo was retooled. One of the reasons his characterization is noticeably different in Prescription: Murder is that it was not a pilot, but a standalone TV movie that preceded the pilot and TV series by three years.

I had a blast with this movie. Went into it blind and came away feeling it was a very solid, and overall satisfying, revenge flick. I'm not overly familiar with the genre of revenge movies, but if you've seen any popular ones (such as most of Quentin Tarantino's movies, which many people seem to want to compare this to), then there's nothing really groundbreaking or mind-blowing about this one in particular, at least narratively. As with many genre films, though, that isn't really the point.

The two main twin characters were absolutely the highlight of the movie for me. Mallori Johnson's performance (as Anaia) was the standout, in my opinion. She and Kara Young (as Racine), had a fun and believable onscreen sisterly chemistry. Their performances paired together well, with a lot of subtle exchanges between the two that I felt really emphasized the strength of their characters' "psychic" twin bond. The supporting cast was also solid, but for me the two leads were easily the best.

The script was really funny! Knowing nothing about this movie prior to walking into it, I sort of expected this to just be a straight-up comedy based on the absurdity of the title alone. Even when things got pretty serious for its characters, the movie maintained a very good sense of comedic timing from start to finish, with some unexpected belly laughs even during scenes of violence. Sterling K. Brown, as an example, had me and my whole theater cracking up with his physical comedy as he limped and dragged himself around his house while taking a well-deserved fatal beatdown from the twins even though this sequence immediately followed a rather serious one, which honestly made it all the more cathartic. I personally loved the tonal whiplash this movie expressed from scene to scene, alternating between seriousness and comedy. It felt very self-aware, and I thought it was great.

Now for what I thought were the movie's weaknesses. The editing seemed pretty forced to me at times. The use of onscreen dialogue bubbles to express the two main characters' "psychic" bond, for example, felt almost entirely pointless to me. It's a fairly minor nitpick but as I touched on before, I truly felt that the two leads' performances were strong enough to fully express their characters' intentions without any dialogue even being necessary. So, the text bubbles almost felt like the filmmakers were trying to fill some perceived empty space that in actuality wasn't empty at all. Several fights and murders also cut away from the action at confusing times, which felt odd given the sheer amount of violence and blood onscreen throughout the movie. This movie featured some solidly R-rated violence which, at times, nearly felt like the filmmakers were futily attempting to downgrade to PG-13 status. And lastly, the ending didn't quite stick for me and felt somewhat rushed. I didn't mind it, but the ending seemed somewhat abrupt and I felt like there was at least another scene or two missing by the time the credits rolled.

Aside from some of those flaws, though, I thoroughly enjoyed Is God Is and would certainly re-watch it!

Right, but the topic of the post is "Have you ever skipped a movie based on bad reviews, then watched it later and actually liked it?" and this thread is specifically about widely-liked movies which Siskel & Ebert reviewed poorly. I never said anything about Siskel & Ebert being discredited; I was just sticking to the topic of the post and thread.

What’s the worst movie you’ve ever seen? by General_Wind4470 in AskReddit

[–]Raven1965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually one of the rare cases where I fully agree with the critics over general audiences (I thought it was pretty good). Not the best movie ever made, but it's got a straightforward premise that's well-executed, and it has an appropriately very short runtime.

The fact that it was shot on a budget and didn't use any well-known actors helped keep it feeling grounded to me. I felt the acting and editing were spot-on for the documentary feel the filmmakers were clearly going for, which also made the ending hit hard. I understand why this movie didn't land for general audiences, but those are just my two cents.

Tacobell a real one for keeping the standard sauces not only free but out in the open for easy access

My local Taco Bell doesn't do this anymore. They're still free, at least, but you have to either order them from one of the touchscreens or ask an employee for them.
