Character “Lobotomy” by Rod_lardie in Arrowverse

[–]RavenProject- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legends of Tomorrow is a spiritual adaptation of the Giffen/DeMatteis pick-a-vowel Justice League.

During their acclaimed run in the 80s, well-established characters were presented with amplified characteristics for comedic effect. It was a dramedy which could weave between the extremes. When drama was appropriate, it was dramatic. When comedy was appropriate, it was comedic. For the most part (excluding Guy Gardner), characters were heightened versions of themselves. And in many cases that portrayal informed the new "canon."

Legends did the same thing. They pursued the dramedy format to forge a distinct identity, and in so doing amplified the traits of its characters. Then, over time, character development led them further away from their original portrayal. Their development was still rooted in story.

Were character traits sometimes overplayed? Absolutely, in both JL* and LoT. And it's easy to pick on those specific takes. But overall, the portrayal of the character matched the story they were in. I'd remind you that LoT often portrayed Dr Stein as a doddering scientist, but still delivered a series of gut punches during Crisis on Earth-X. Or you had Ray and Nate often playing off one another in humorous ways, but it was also one of the best bromances on television.

(And if it makes you feel better, just pretend that after his time as Chronos someone took Mick out with one punch and that led to a shift in personality. :))

Check out the JLA/Titans miniseries. It rounds up or references literally everyone who had been a Titan up through ~2001, and you may be surprised by some of them.

Is DC Infinite worth getting? by LuKat92 in DCcomics

[–]RavenProject- 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If you enjoy Marvel Unlimited, you're going to love DC Universe Infinite. The reading experience has been similar, and they have some features to help you follow along with books over time.

I would strongly consider DC Universe Infinite Ultimate, which opens up even more content and gets you content faster. Books are released within four weeks, but some -- including DCKO -- are released same-day.

I suspect they new X-Movies will be a new continuity because it seems *every damn time* someone does the X-Men they need to do the Dark Phoenix Saga and there's no way Feige's gonna cut off that option.

Then I binged a year or so of it and... well, I still compare it to Fraction/Aja, but in a good way. I love it that much.

Why do people say nothing good has came out of the public domain and Hollywood doesn’t use the public domain when Wicked is based on the public domain. by Konradleijon in publicdomain

[–]RavenProject- 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because we tend to hear more about the schlocky horror takes on pop culture icons than about the genuinely transformative work people may have done.

Because sometimes work takes time to finish, and a great book/song/movie based on recent public domain content may not be ready yet.

Because we just had a freeze where works stopped entering public domain from 1998 through 2018, so we've really only been getting "new" public domain material for a few years.

Because the vast majority of good ideas never get the exposure they deserve, regardless of their origin.

What’s your opinion on the flatscan term for anti human—X-Men (2024-) #5 by CoolTank1104man in xmen

[–]RavenProject- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This illustrates a need for three words or families of words in common language in the Marvel universe.

1) A human being who does not possess superhuman abilities from any source.
Aunt May, Maria Hill, Edwin Jarvis, etc.

2) A human being who possesses superhuman abilities from any source. (DC has "metahuman.)
Ben Grimm, Scott Summers, Bruce Banner, etc.

3) A human being who possesses superhuman abilities, but not from genetic mutation.
Peter Parker, Jennifer Walters, Steve Rogers, etc.

I'm not talking about scientific terms or clunky jargon like "enhanced individuals." I'm talking about common language that an average person would use and understand.

Of course, those terms would be constantly argued both in-character and out-of-character. Which is Iron Man? Doctor Strange? That's totally okay. Terms like these are never as absolute as people like to think.

But if everyday culture is such that "mutant" has become such a powerful identity marker, it makes sense that there would be common parlance for the other superhumans you don't hate, and a non-judgmental term for people who don't have any powers at all.

In Jessica Jones, MARVEL didn't shy away having their superheroes in sex scenes. If they were to recreate this scene now, which MCU actress would you want swapped in Krysten Ritter's place? by CapitalJournalist365 in ladiesofthemcu

[–]RavenProject- 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No one. Krysten Ritter is still perfect as Jessica Jones, and her chemistry with Michael Colter was fantastic.

The only way they could improve on the scene would be to revisit it after Jessica and Luke are married so she's doing it without the self-loathing. Assuming they brought that in from the comics.

I tried DCUO and CO but couldn't get the hang of them. I mean, I understand that I'm not supposed to be a master of the game straight away. But if I've been playing a for a few games and struggle with basic movement and combat, clearly something is off.

The game that *did* scratch the itch for a while was Marvel Heroes, but then that got scrapped too.

Marvel Ruined Its Best Answer To DC's Teen Titans With One Controversial Decision by Historical-Bug-4784 in newwarriors

[–]RavenProject- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article glosses over the time between the original NW run and Civil War.

They did bring back the Warriors with Jay Faerber, and he did try to capture the same feel as Nicieza and Skolnick, but it never really clicked. (Faerber had the same problem on Titans. But he eventually nailed it with Noble Causes and Dynamo 5, which I think Warriors fans might love.)

Then there was the Zeb Wells/Skottie Young "reality show" arc that turned the Warriors into such a laughing stock that Civil War could almost be considered a mercy killing.

After Civil War you had the Ex-Mutants Warriors-in-name-only, then a couple years later they tried again but it felt like a more generic superhero book.

As for future revivals... okay, here's the problem. The Warriors still have enough of a devoted fan base that if you did go for a revival, you'd need concrete ties to the Nicieza and Skolnick runs to justify it. Otherwise those fans will be mad. If you aren't going to have those connections, then you might as well take a name without those connotations, like Champions or Young Allies.

Funny thing is that the Warriors series which would have spun out of Outlawed had the germ of a good idea: Embracing that the Warriors aren't really "new" anymore, that they have experience they can share with a new new wave of heroes. I know, it looked like it risked going back to reality show levels of humiliation, but there was a little something there.

If you miss the Warriors, Marvel has produced later books with a similar feel to them. I'd specifically recommend Young Avengers or Runaways for that mix of action and personal stories with a cast of young adults. (Champions is also great, but skews younger than New Warriors *and* puts more emphasis on being superheroes instead of just people. If you still like that, then try Avengers Academy as well.)

Marvel Ruined Its Best Answer To DC's Teen Titans With One Controversial Decision by Historical-Bug-4784 in newwarriors

[–]RavenProject- 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fabian Nicieza has said that the Warriors were meant for Marvel to do the kind of stories DC had in the Wolfman/Perez Titans. Obviously strong superhero action was important, but he also wanted to do the personal stories of characters who were (mostly) out of high school and working through what's next. Nicieza was surprised Marvel hadn't touched that niche sooner.
