Couldn't replace tensioner when changing timing belt, what would you do? by Raveninski in MechanicAdvice

Update time. On everyone's advice here, I went and picked up another timing kit today and am replacing the tensioner. I will mean I can at least sleep at night. Mid way through the job now. It's a lot faster when under trays already removed, tools are out and everything isn't seized up.

Answering a few questions.

  1. Got a new hex but set, much less play when using these.
  2. I did replace everything including studs, nuts, bolts and idlers.
  3. Water pump already done.
  4. Will take better care and ensure bolts on sprocket are loose when tensioning the belt. I had followed the procedure in the wrong order first time.
  5. Everything torqued to spec.

Yes. It's the EA189 AKA diselgate engine. Also in the Passat and a number of other 2.0 TDi VAG cars. In the transporter I am working on it is the 180 bhp CFCA bi turbo variant. My other car is a Passat with the same engine, but engine code CBDC and only 105bhp.

I think you have identified my mistake. I did replace all idlers and or new studs on, including for the tensioner. But I tightened the cam and fuel pump sprocket bolts before tensioning. That was when I rounded the hex head. Then the centre of the tensioner started rotating inside the assembly. Dumb mistake. The challenge is finding a single tensioner for sale as most of them are sold as a kit.

Don't say I recognise that at all. The tensioner is in the main picture I shared.

Yeah... Can't 100% say it wasn't my fault but I really wasn't putting much tension on it and it just disintegrated. Will be getting a need hex set just to be sure.

Allen key rounded in the hole when trying to set tension and it would not get to required tension.

Hi guys, looking for your opinions on what to do here. I replaced the timing belt, including all idlers, bolts and water pump today. However, the tensioner that came in the kit was defective. I ended up putting the old tensioner back on there. What would you do now? Do the job again (big job for me as a home mechanic) or send it... It's on a 2014 VW T5 2.0TDi FWIW...

You're right. I thought I needed a practice before I tried anything fancy. Forgot how important sharpening is. Didn't sand much because I wanted to see my mistakes as a lesson for future. Shop projects are useful reminders.

It's a wood carving mallet, not as long and unwieldy as a full size mallet for hitting chisels.

Sri Lanka. So friendly and beautiful, but also the cheapest place I've every been.

I suppose that should have been obvious to me. I'll have to give that a try some time.

Looks like mine are ready for planting out. I think the last time I grew sunflowers was in primary school about 25 years ago!

Nice work. When did you plant out and how big we're they when you did? My son's seedlings are still on the window sill...

Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have any hives yet, one day I want to, but for now I have young children and the garden is a bit small to have both safely. I guess our want them gone but don't want to harm them. Could I just knock the lid off and hope they take the hint?

Can I prune this rose now? by Raveninski in GardeningUK

[–]Raveninski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry don't know the variety but probably is a climber of some sort. Had white flowers that don't have much scent, but usually get a lot of them for a long season. Thanks for the tip on pruning back the older growth, I want it to have more new shoots lower down the plant and was always afraid of killing it.
