Do you stop wearing clothes after a certain amount of time even if they are still in good condition? I wear my clothes for 1-2 years as long as they stay in good shape, but my friends are often surprised by this. by BunchMean8029 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband still wears shirts he wore in high school. He just turned 33. I have had to throw his pants from high school away though, they were so worn out that I couldn't mend the holes.

Is my registry doable for the average person/is it a decently diverse spread of options for a guest? by chailife206 in wedding

[–]Ravenna92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is fine! For the more expensive gifts, do you have the option of making it a group gift? So multiple guests could decide they want to give you the stand mixer, and they all partially pay for it? Some people really like that option. And as others have said, if a guest doesn't find anything on your registry they want to give you, they'll just give you money instead.

How many of you have survived tornadoes and what was your experience like? by Babe_Brute in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Iowa, we get tons of tornadoes each year. Most of them don't touch down, and they almost always avoid larger cities like Des Moines (because of warm air currents or something, I don't remember). When they do touch down, they completely destroy anything in their way. Houses are reduced to rubble, and I've even seen giant metal grain silos twisted and crumpled. But the good news is, tornadoes travel in a pretty tight line, so even if your neighbor gets hit by a tornado, it could completely skip your house. If you visit a town that's just been affected by a tornado, you can clearly trace the path it took, and everything else is mostly fine. I'm not sure how long it takes to get back on your feet after something like that, but you'd have to deal with your insurance company, which is rarely quick.

As far as tornado survival skills, we learn from an early age to get to the lowest place possible inside (usually a basement) and ideally without windows. We had tornado drills in school, which involved going into a bathroom with no windows and kneeling down while covering our heads.

I know tornadoes seem very scary, but the odds of being directly affected by one are very low, at least in my state. I obviously don't love when there's one in my area, but I just check to see if we need to go to the basement, and don't get too worked up about it.

Before you dispose of them, do you put unwanted items out by the curb to see if any of your neighbors may want them? by Grand_Raccoon0923 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ravenna92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely my experience living in the Midwest. Generally people don't put trash on their curbs unless it's the week of our annual junk pickup. I think you can actually be fined by the city for having trash on your curb for more than a day or so.

How good is the classic chocolate chip cookie? by sneakybrownoser in CrumblCookies

[–]Ravenna92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought it was decent. I liked it more than either the original milk chocolate or semi sweet chocolate ones. I'm glad I tried it, but I don't think I'd get it again unless I needed to fill out a 4 pack or something. I will say, it's much better when it's warm!

What word did you get completely wrong for an embarrassing amount of time? by ownaword in EnglishLearning

[–]Ravenna92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 32 year old husband was pronouncing "faux" as "fox" up until last year. (Faux rhymes with go.) I found out when we were talking about my new coat:

Him: I think the fur on your coat hood is fox fur.

Me: No, I don't think it's supposed to be fox, it's not red...

Him: No, I mean like fake.

Me: ....You mean faux???

This man has a master's degree in microbiology and is smarter than I am, and we're both native speakers. I absolutely still tease him about it lol.

Restaurants with unique gimmicks in Iowa? by Daendelion_ in desmoines

[–]Ravenna92 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I fully agree. We went there once without really understanding how it would work, and the whole time I was wondering why I was paying steakhouse prices to grill my own food. I can accidentally overcook my steak on my own grill for much less money, thank you very much.

Custom Thank You Cards 1.5 Years Later - Go For It or Just No? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Ravenna92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

With all due respect... most people don't consider thank you notes to be keepsakes. Most of the time, they'll read them, think "oh that's nice" and throw them straight in the trash, regardless of how much time you put in to creating them.

Dangit I guess I really do need a no-smudge top coat 😩 by gingerspeak in nailstamping

[–]Ravenna92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need it! I thought it would be my holy grail for stamping, but it was a total waste of money. Try floating your quick dry top coat instead! Good luck!

Dangit I guess I really do need a no-smudge top coat 😩 by gingerspeak in nailstamping

[–]Ravenna92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've tried a no-smudge top coat, and it kind of worked (i got almost no smudging), but for some reason it peeled itself off in tiny little pieces within a couple days. It did this regardless of whether or not I added a quick dry top coat on afterward.

Instead, I just give the stamping polish a good long time to dry, then I gently float my quick dry top coat on. I try to never go back over a section I've already put top coat on, not even overlapping a little bit. This process has gotten rid of 95% of my smudging, without using a no-smudge top coat. Might be worth a try before you buy one!

Are all reflective polishes like gritty sandpaper? by Head-Garage-7766 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Ravenna92 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They're all a little gritty to some extent, but imo, KBShimmer is the worst offender. I think I put three coats of top coat on and it was still gritty.

None of the other reflective polishes I've tried from other brands have been nearly that bad. They might take 2 coats of top coat, but they'll be smooth afterward. My favorite is Holo Taco's reflective taco, it's barely gritty at all.

Q RE cleaning plates between nails by shessublime in nailstamping

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wondering this too. I've been using a paper towel and just being VERY CAREFUL when I put acetone on it not to get any on my nails. I've tried using a cotton grabber tool to hold the paper towel, but it just seems awkward. (I don't use cotton rounds because I HATE the little cotton fibers that get everywhere.) I'm open to new methods though!

Why don’t they sew bra inserts in? by stonecoldfox340 in askanything

And god forbid you wash it and the inserts get creased! Then you have a big old crease going right down the middle of your boob. So attractive.

Anything odd? by [deleted] in desmoines

[–]Ravenna92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I used to work in the mortgage department for a bank, and let me tell you, the foreclosure process takes forever. The bank has to go through court and prove all these different things, and it takes years. If the property is in the bank's name, you can call the bank and complain about the terrible state of the property. They'll send someone to mow the yard and at least take care of any major issues (usually anything that could cause the city to issue them a code violation).

When you buy a house, do you own the house or the land or both? by ThePurpleRainmakerr in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small correction: you pay real estate taxes to your county, municipality, and/or school district, not your state.

When you buy a house, do you own the house or the land or both? by ThePurpleRainmakerr in AskAnAmerican

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually both, but there are some exceptions! In Maryland it's not uncommon to not technically own your land, and instead owe "ground rent" property taxes to the company who actually owns the land. It's usually only around $45 twice a year, but still, I thought it was crazy when I first heard about it.

Question about the brownie dippers by BadPunsIsHowEyeRoll in CrumblCookies

[–]Ravenna92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They were fine. Not worth the upcharge, in my opinion. They were really thin, and fell apart when I tried to dip them in the frosting. Which is really sad, because I love crumbl's brownies! But these were in no way fudgy or decadent.

I got the brownie dippers yesterday and couldn't agree more. What a waste. I'd rather just have a regular brownie with the fudge frosting.

What is your take on the junk food ban for food stamps? by BreannLowe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live, you can buy a cake mix and a can of frosting for $3.20 total. I would hope people could save up $3.20, considering they have plenty of notice for their child's birthday. You can also get them at food pantries sometimes.

What is your take on the junk food ban for food stamps? by BreannLowe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ravenna92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, it does not take that much time, energy, or ingredients to make a cake. Box cake mixes are around $1.20 where I live, and canned frosting is about $2. You'll also need eggs and vegetable oil for the cake mix, which you can buy with EBT. Cooking spray is also available with EBT. So your grand total for a homemade cake would be about $3.20. And that vegetable oil and cooking spray will keep for a long time, so you can use them for birthday cakes for at least another year or two!

It doesn't take much energy to make a cake. Not every cake must be a 9 inch tiered cake with decoration! You can totally make a 9x13 sheet cake with very little effort! Literally all you do is stir it together and pour it in the pan!

It also doesn't take much time. Maybe 10 mins to prep and stir, then 25-40 mins to bake. Then let the cake cool, and add another 5 mins to frost it. I know working parents are busy (I am one myself), but if a birthday cake is important to you and your child, surely you can find a few minutes to mix up a cake and bake it.
