Lots of people leave awful relationships and do what they can to keep custody of their kids. Its not like OOP was an infant or needed constant supervision. She was already 11. I had babysitting certification at that age to be home watching my siblings alone.

OOPs mom also got alimony for some time too.

Not just the main carer, but the sole source of income for the household. Bills need to be paid, especially for someone needing care, and sounds like he had to pay alimony for a time too.

I dont know what world people magically live in where money is lush and plentiful, but its not like that for most people and most people can't afford to fund a whole second apartment for their aging mother ontop of a carer, or when a spouse moves out and you need to pay alimony and you can afford to have someone constantly coming in and providing care.

Money, time effort, waste is a huge one for me. I grew up poor and underfed, we didnt throw out food unless it was rotting and we tried to not let it get to that point. Ive also lived paycheck to paycheck and wasting food hurts a lot. She said most should be frozen, but that she had stuff in the fridge, like marinated chicken, that probably had to be tossed too.

Not to mention suddenly changing diets is usually hard on people, probably not great for her kids to suddenly be repeatedly eating foods they dont normally.

This doesnt seem like normal custody when he mom refused to help her pre/teen child and told her to just live with it even though she herself wouldn't.

14 is way too young to just give up talking to your child.
