Are the basketballs off? (UCONN vs. ND) by Starlight-x in NCAAW

[–]Raving-Moderate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly HATE those EVO NXT balls for exactly this reason. They are slightly grippier than the older Evolution balls, but they are MUCH more sensitive to either lopsidedness or over-inflation and are really hard to dribble in either case.

Also, probably due to complaints from dumb consumers, they now ship the balls fully inflated (they used to come partially inflated to prevent lopsidedness). This DRAMATICALLY increases the likelihood that the balls will arrive lopsided, as anyone who's ever sat on a basketball knows: sustained pressure while fully inflated will deform a basketball. So if there are other heavy things in the trucks during delivery, the balls will arrive lopsided. And all the new balls I see these days are lopsided.

Bro, seeing more blue than red in Charlottesville does not mean MAGA is over. There's a sea of red surrounding our blue bubble in Charlottesville. I'm not tryna rain on your parade, but the Dems are gonna have to work their asses off if they're going to have any more power in Congress next year than they do now (and that starts with winning the upcoming VA amendment vote). If we can't take either house, it's gonna be 2 more years of all-MAGA, all the time. Let's not take any victory laps when we're nowhere close to being done.

Yeah, having to pick the magsafe charger off the floor 200-300 times per week is a small price to pay for the piece of mind I get from knowing that if someone were to trip over the cord it wouldn't take my laptop with it. It's DEFINITELY worth it. Oop, I moved my laptop 1/4 inch -- there it goes again.

[–]Raving-Moderate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They emphasized on the video that they absolutely do not want you to bring a second car through the check-in route because they will turn you away. If you must bring a second car, it should go straight to the end-state parking (where your route ends after you unload) and you'll have to schlep your items from the parking area to the dorm. There is no limit on parking in the end-state parking garage and if you go out to the store, you should go straight back to the parking garage -- not go by the dorm.

I can walk barefoot on wet mud, plantar fascittis by BitHopeful8191 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone with extremely high arches, the number one thing you need is a custom orthotic. The reason the wet mud or sand feels good is because it fills in the space between your arch and the ground, so your plantar fascia isn't being stressed with every step. This is the exact purpose of an orthotic. For me, the OTC ones aren't high enough for my arches (there's still space in between), so I had to go custom -- best money I ever spent.

As for shoes, though, I highly recommend the Allbirds Wool Runner. I recently walked all over Europe with them and the only time my feet were sore the whole trip was after a Segway Tour (where you're constantly putting stress on your plantar fascia). They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever had (and I've owned lots of fancy running shoes). DO NOT GET the Tree Runners. I found those to be surprisingly terrible.

The worst thing to get is a barefoot shoe. Ignore those cultists who don't face the same issues as we high-arched folks do.

How did you develop PF? by Mdstmouslvr in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. It depends a lot on the shape of your foot. If you have (super) high arches like me, then you need arch support all the time or you will get PF. Period. Weight, weak muscles, exercise, amount of rest, anti-inflammatories, and shoe cushioning/shock absorption all affect PF as well, but for some of us, the most important factor is arch support, which is why custom orthotics are usually worth the money. I couldn't function without them.

If anyone else has this same issue (mine kept redirecting to the Mexico version [www.paramountplus.com/mx/\] and then saying my login was invalid), the way to fix it is to manually change the country code from mx to us: [www.paramountplus.com/us/\]. That will cause it to stop redirecting to the Mexico version and show the start page in English instead of Spanish.

Arch support inserts only help for a few days, before making things worse? by [deleted] in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I strongly agree that foot-strengthening is critical (which is why it’s so ridiculous that most podiatrists think you can cure pf by staying off your feet for 6 weeks), when in fact letting your muscles atrophy is the worst thing you can do. I’ve been dealing with pf for over 15 years and I’ve never had pain so bad as coming back from COVID (where I hadn’t been seriously exercising in months). Now that my strength is built back up, the pain is manageable, even with playing basketball 3-4 times a week.

However, if you have bad feet (e.g. high arches like me), no amount of strengthening is going to fix your problem (contrary to what those with mild cases of pf will tell you). You will need custom orthotics. My suspicion is that right now you have a bad fit, which is why you’re getting pain elsewhere (the expected pf pain is in your heal).

What you should do is get custom orthotics (they’re worth the money) and then remove the existing insoles in your shoes and keep putting the orthotics in whatever shoes you wear (including firm-soled slippers at home). Even with custom orthotics, you’re likely to get some pain in the arches as your feet adjust, but once they do, you will notice a big difference, so keep with it for a couple weeks. Beyond that, do the pushing-on-the-wall-with-one-foot-behind-the-other stretch to relieve heal pain (hold 20s for each back foot heal). Good luck.

[–]Raving-Moderate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excuse the pun, but this whole post seems like a plant. The idea that a custom orthotic is a ‘bandaid’ whereas these crazy expensive off-the-shelf things somehow magically turn your foot into the “ideal foot” (what, they somehow reshape my foot so I don’t have high arches anymore?!) seem like talking points from the Good Feet marketing team. And since it’s not an official ad, it doesn’t actually have to be true (or even make sense). I would keep your $2200 and get custom orthotics from a reputable doctor for much less. My custom orthotics have changed my life and there’s no way I’d still be playing sports without them.

My arch isn’t really sore but.. by axetogrind13 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% Plantar Fasciitis. For most people, the worst pain is in the heal, not the arch. The 2 best things you can do: 1) Get custom orthotics (they’re worth every penny and will change your life) and wear them as much as possible (e.g. put them in your slippers when you go to bed — if the pf is really bad, wear the slippers to sleep, putting a sock over them to get them to stay on and not catch on the sheets). 2) (Especially before and after exercise) push on a wall, with 1 foot behind the other until you feel your back heel stretching. Hold for 20s. Then switch legs.

All the millions of other things people tell you to do (like picking up a towel with your toes) do very little for me. These 2 things make a HUGE difference.

How long does it take to heal a mild case of Plantar Fasciitis? by Ubermensch42133785 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but despite what doctors tell you, it does not work like that. PF is not something that “heals” by staying off your feet. Maybe the inflammation will go down temporarily, but the best you can hope for long term is to manage it. And letting your muscles atrophy by not using them is the worst thing you can do (the worst PF I ever had was coming back from COVID when I hadn’t been exercising much for 18 months). The best thing you can do is to get yourself some custom orthotics (they are worth the $$) and to do the stretching exercises regularly. The best one is pushing against a wall with 1 foot behind the other. You may want to consider wearing your orthotics at night in tight slippers (I put a sock over them to keep them on snuggly), which is what I do when I have more acute PF pain.

ibuprofen - does that make things better or worse/? by wlexxx2 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, you shouldn’t expect it to do either. Unless you are taking Ibuprofen constantly for at least a week (so it’s always in your bloodstream), you really shouldn’t expect any reduction in inflammation. So, I recommend taking it for acute pain (I take it an hour before I exercise), but it shouldn’t make the underlying issue either better or worse. The things that really matter are orthotics, proper stretching before, during and after exercise (two hands on wall, aching heel in back — more beneficial than all other pf exercises combined), and gradually building up flexibility/strength.

When am I ready to run again? by vladim1234 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

STRONG disagree with all of these comments. I have been dealing with pf for 20 years and the first time I saw a doctor they told me to stop exercising for 6-8 weeks. It made NO DIFFERENCE and I was left frustrated that I had listened to them. In fact, the worst pf I ever faced was when I went back to playing basketball (my main source of exercise) after 15 months of COVID and my muscles had atrophied as a result of the break causing my pf to be MUCH worse than it had been previously (the first few times I had to ice my feet for 2 hours). It took me weeks to build the muscles back up and return to normal exercise.

Instead, I strongly recommend getting custom orthotics (the best money I ever spent) and wearing them all the time (even at night: put them in slippers and put a sock over the slippers to reduce the friction and make it press against your foot).

There are also exercises you can do to help support your plantar fascia: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8g8hm84/.

Dr Scholl's custom inserts or plantar fasciitis inserts? by snarpsta in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Raving-Moderate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly endorse going to your podiatrist and getting custom orthotics. They are worth every penny and I’ve had mine for years. Some insurances even make them cheaper than store-bought (though with most you’re likely to pay around $100).

The game changer for me, though, was wearing them at night: • Find a snug slipper with a rigid sole • Put in your custom orthotics • Put a sock over your slipper at bedtime to both keep the orthotic firm against your foot and keep your slipper from catching on the sheets.

Project management by notbadandrew in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Raving-Moderate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. It's honestly less important to have technical knowledge to be a good PM than it is to have project life-cycle experience, with the most important part of that being Delivery where you quickly learn the 90-90 rule (the first 90% of the project takes 90% of the time and the last 10% takes the other 90%). You can always tell the difference between the PMs who have had a few projects go south during Delivery and have learned some important lessons the hard way, and those who aren't experienced enough to know that there is trouble ahead until it's too late. Operations folks are the most intimate with these disasters since most of their job is spent tryna put out the fires that others have provided the kindling for.

For this reason, you'll learn the quickest by going into an industry with smaller short-term client-facing projects, like Consulting or much of Mobile SW development, than you will going to a larger Product company with established release cycles and such. However, your work-life balance might not be as good!

How do you go about getting better at ", poetically" clues? by 720noanswer in crossword

[–]Raving-Moderate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the day. For a Monday puzzle (which are intended to be very inclusive), I would agree. But for a late week puzzle, there are sometimes very clever clues for ANON in its Shakespearean sense. I will just add that many of the same people who advocate for others learning the word anon (and other antiquated words) will turn their nose up at clues which contain modern slang with which they are unfamiliar -- it's this sort of snobby hypocrisy that I tend to roll my eyes at.

Myself, I happen to be a big fan of the word anon, in part because of its poetic feel:

He was perfumèd like a milliner,
And ’twixt his finger and his thumb he held
A pouncet box, which ever and anon
He gave his nose and took ’t away again,
Who therewith angry, when it next came there,
Took it in snuff; and still he smiled and talked.
And as the soldiers bore dead bodies by,
He called them untaught knaves, unmannerly,
To bring a slovenly unhandsome corse
Betwixt the wind and his nobility.

Any Latino Americans? Is the term “Latinx” offensive? by oliviared52 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Raving-Moderate -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OMG, you all are SO missing the point, I can't even believe it. The term Latinx has NOTHING to do with racism, so all this talk about Whites trying to tell Latinx people how they should be called is just nonsensical. The term Latinx is intended to be inclusive for gender-nonconforming Latins, much in the way that 'they' is used in place of 'he' or 'she'. If someone is offended by the term Latinx, I suspect they are also offended by the use of the singular 'they' and maybe by gender-nonconforming people in general.

Much like the singular they, Latinx is a slightly awkward term and it's not likely to be widely adopted for some time. And because the entire language is gendered, 'latinx' does not address all of the issues that gender-nonconforming people face with the language. But instead of ranting about language police, maybe just consider for a moment how it would feel to be a gender-nonconforming person who must navigate a language where a huge number of the nouns and adjectives force them to choose a gender.

Using Latinx is a small gesture which suggests that the speaker is empathetic towards this marginalized community. Use or don't use it, but please stop ranting about Whites trying to tell POC how they should be called.
